Aim: We describe a one-year investigation of colonization by imipenemresistant, metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of the University Hospital of Palermo, Italy. Methods: A prospective epidemiological investigation was conducted in the period 2003 January to 2004 January. Rectal swabs were collected twice a week from all neonates throughout their NICU stay. Predictive factors for Enterococcus faecalis in complicated community‐acquired urinary tract infections in older patients

AIM Risk factors for complicated community acquired Enterococcus faecalis urinary tract infection (UTI) in older patients are not well known. METHODS We identified the predictive factors for E. faecalis on a cohort of 659 older patients admitted to hospital with complicated UTI. We also examined the adequacy of empirical antimicrobial therapy and outcomes in E. faecalis UTI. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of E. faecalis UTI. RESULTS A total of 87 (13.2%) patients had E. faecalis UTI; of these 63.2% were men, their mean age was 82.3 years and they had a great number of comorbidities. AIM The aim of the study was to determine the rate of inadequate empirical antimicrobial treatment in older nursing home residents with bacteremic urinary tract infection and its influence on prognosis. METHODS We carried out a multicentric prospective observational study in five Spanish hospitals. Patients aged >65 years with pyelonephritis or urinary sepsis with bacteremia were included. Background Multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli (MDRGN) are an important cause of nosocomial infections in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). We conducted a 1-year prospective surveillance study in an NICU to assess the epidemiology of MDRGN among newborns and the relative importance of acquisition routes. Influence of Drawing on the Antimicrobial and Physical Properties of Chlorhexidine-Compounded Poly(caprolactone) Monofilaments

In this work, we prepared poly(caprolactone) (PCL) monofilaments incorporating different amounts of the antiseptic chlorhexidine diacetate (CHX) and evaluated the effect of "online" drawing during the melt spinning or of an "offline" cold drawing on the antimicrobial and physical properties of PCL/CHX monofilaments. The results showed that the drawing conditions strongly affected the properties of the threads. In particular, the filaments exhibited antimicrobial activity for all the draw ratios (DR) adopted, but on increasing DR the antibacterial efficiency reduced. These results were correlated with the CHX surface concentration and with the release kinetics.

Preparation, characterization and in vitro antimicrobial activity of ampicillin-loaded polyethylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles.

In this paper, the experimental conditions for preparing ampicillin-loaded polyethylcyanoacrylate (PECA) nanoparticles are described. The effects of drug concentration and surfactant type in the polymerization medium on the particle size distribution and loading capacity were studied. The results of these studies show that only the type of surfactant has an impact on the nanoparticle dimensions. The release rate of ampicillin from PECA nanoparticles at pH 7.4 (extracellular value pH) performed either with and without esterases, show that the drug release is considerably increased in the presence of these exzymes.
