Wastewaters from citrus processing industry as natural biostimulants for soil microbial community

Abstract Citrus fruit processing wastewaters (CWWs), being rich in organic matter, may be a valuable resource for agricultural irrigation and, possibly, for the improvement of soil organic carbon (TOC). This issue is becoming crucial for soils of arid and semiarid environments increasingly experiencing water scarcity and continuous decline of TOC towards levels insufficient to sustain crop production. Der Einflu� von Antibiotica auf die �berlebensrate von Mikroorganismen bei tiefen Temperaturen

Die Lebendkeimzahl in einer Suspension vonE. coli nimmt bei +4°C langsam zu, nimmt bei-5°C wenig ab und fallt bei-19°C innerhalb von 24 Std stark, wahrend die Verringerung in den folgenden Tagen nur noch gering ist. Streptomycin und Penicillin vermindern in allen 3 Temperaturbereichen die Keimkonzentration in Abhangigkeit von der Antibioticumkonzentration. Subbakteriostatische Konzentrationen von Streptomycin haben bei-19°C eine zusatzliche Wirkung. Die Resistenz der in uberbakteriostatischen Antibioticakonzentrationen bei diesen Temperaturen uberlebenden Keime ist gegenuber dem Ausgangsstamm weder erhoht noch vermindert.

Application of model quality evaluation to systems biology

2008

Application of model quality evaluation to the quasispecies models is presented. These models are useful for the analysis of the DNA and RNA evolution and for the description of the population dynamics of viruses and bacteria. An estimate of the parameters together with their interval of variability is computed and the quality evaluation is tested on the basis of the model prediction error capability.

Presence of pathogenic bacteria in ice cubes and evaluation of their survival in different systems

In this study, 60 samples of ice cubes produced at different levels (domestic, restaurant and industrial facilities), within a restricted geographical area, were investigated for their general microbiological characteristics through the analysis of populations other than enteric bacteria. Although sediments of small boreal humic lakes are important carbon stores and greenhouse gas sources, the composition and structuring mechanisms of their microbial communities have remained understudied. We analyzed the vertical profiles of microbial biomass indicators (PLFAs, DNA and RNA) and the bacterial and archaeal community composition (sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons and qPCR of mcrA) in sediment cores collected from a typical small boreal lake.
