Discrete-lattice theory for Frenkel-defect aggregation in irradiated ionic solids
1998
Institut fu ¨r Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie, Technische Universitat Braunschweig, D-38106 Braunschweig, Germany~Received 11 September 1997; revised manuscript received 6 April 1998!A microscopic theory of diffusion-controlled aggregation of radiation Frenkel defects—called in ionic solidsH and F centers—is presented. This is based on a discrete-lattice formalism for the single defect densities~concentrations! and the coupled joint densities of similar and dissimilar defects treated in terms of a modifiedKirkwood superposition approximation. The kinetics of defect aggregation is studied in detail; the cooperativecharacter of this process for both types of complementary defects is sho…
Automatic Biological Cell Counting Using a Modified Gradient Hough Transform
2017
AbstractWe present a computational method for pseudo-circular object detection and quantitative characterization in digital images, using the gradient accumulation matrix as a basic tool. This Gradient Accumulation Transform (GAT) was first introduced in 1992 by Kierkegaard and recently used by Kaytanli & Valentine. In the present article, we modify the approach by using the phase coding studied by Cicconet, and by adding a “local contributor list” (LCL) as well as a “used contributor matrix” (UCM), which allow for accurate peak detection and exploitation. These changes help make the GAT algorithm a robust and precise method to automatically detect pseudo-circular objects in a microscop…
Toward fast malaria detection by secondary speckle sensing microscopy
2012
Diagnosis of malaria must be rapid, accurate, simple to use, portable and low cost, as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite recent efforts, the gold standard remains the light microscopy of a stained blood film. This method can detect low parasitemia and identify different species of Plasmodium. However, it is time consuming, it requires well trained microscopist and good instrumentation to minimize misinterpretation, thus the costs are considerable. Moreover, the equipment cannot be easily transported and installed. In this paper we propose a new technique named "secondary speckle sensing microscopy" ((SM)-M-3) based upon extraction of correlation based statistics of s…
UTILIZZO DELLA MICROSCOPIA ELETTRONICA A SCANSIONE PER L’ANALISI MORFOLOGICA E ULTRASTRUTTURALE DI CARIOSSIDI DI FRUMENTO DURO
2013
2015
Cereals are an important source of carbohydrates in the human contributing to a certain extent also to the need of protein. They constitute a rich source of both nonstarch polysaccharides (dietary fiber) and starch, which together comprise 70-77% of kernel. The Guidelines for a Healthy Diet in Italy define the opportunity to take, on a daily basis, at least 60% of energy from carbohydrates, and particularly 45% from complex carbohydrates. In Italy, especially in Sicily, these nutrients are contained in traditional food as pasta and bread made starting from durum wheat as grow material. Recently, especially in the bigger towns, there is also widespread consumption of bread made with soft whe…
Editorial: Calculation of Passenger Car Equivalents at Roundabouts
2021
Editorial on the Research Topic: Calculation of Passenger Car Equivalents at Roundabouts About this Research Topic: Calculation of Passenger Car Equivalents (PCEs) for heavy vehicles represents the starting point for the operational analysis of road facilities and other traffic management applications. PCEs are used to consider the presence of heavy vehicles in the traffic stream and are expressed as multiples of the effect of an average passenger car. Moreover, the highly curvilinear nature of the roundabout design, both in urban and rural environment, has significant effects on the paths that heavy vehicles would travel; as a consequence, the interaction between the physical and performan…
The eigen-structure of the Jacobian in multi-class Lighthill-Whitham-Richards traffic flow models
2007
Characteristic-based High Resolution Shock Capturing schemes for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws require, in their basic design structure, knowledge on the complete eigen-decomposition of the Jacobian matrix of the system. For the Multi-Class Lighthill-Witham-Richards (MCLWR) Traffic flow model considered in [4], there is no explicit formula for the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix, which can only be determined numerically. However, once they are determined, the eigen-vectors are easily computed and straightforward formulas can be obtained by exploiting the specific structure of the Jacobian matrix in these models. Polymer-metal plasmonic waveguide : passive and active components for integrated photonics
2009
Dielectric loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) enable transmission at a sub-wavelength scale of both electrical and plasmonic (optical waves at the interface between a metal and a dielectric) signals in the same circuitry. Moreover, the use of a polymer as the dielectric load enables the functionalization of DLSPPWs. Therefore, this configuration is of great interest for integrated photonic applications. However, DLSPPWs suffer strong losses due to dissipation into the metal film. We address here the possibility of compensating the losses using a configuration analogous to an optical amplifier. We first set theoretical (effective index model), numerical (differential metho…
Contrôle de nano-antennes optiques par une commande électrique : tuner plasmonique et transduction
2011
Optical nano-antennae are the new class of components to control light/matterinteraction at the nanoscale. These devices are operating in the visible to near infraredpart of the spectrum. The properties of these nano objects are controlled by theform, the size and the material. In the radio frequency domain, the tuner changes dynamically the operatingwavelength of the antenna. In this thesis work, we search to transfer this conceptto the nanoscale. The principle is to change the load impedance of the antenna, i.e.changing the optical index of the dielectric medium around the nano-object. Forthat we used anisotropic liquid cristal molecules. The value of the optical index iscontrolled by appl…
