Collagenous colitis: new diagnostic possibilities with endomicroscopy

2006

Collagenous colitis is a kind of microscopic colitis. It is characterized by chronic watery diarrhea and abdominal pain. The etiology is still unknown. So far, for the diagnose a histological evaluation was necessary with the presence of thickened subepithelial collagneous bands in the lamina propria. A new developed endoscope with a confocal laser allows analysing cellular and subcellular details of the mucosal layer at high resolution in vivo. In this case report we describe for the first time to diagnose collagenous colitis during ongoing colonoscopy by using this confocal endomicroscopy. In a 67 year old female patient with typical symptoms the characteristic histological changes could …

Investigation of the superstructure of native collagen by a combination of small angle X-ray scattering, electron microscopy and light diffraction

1978

It is shown that there exists a direct correlation between the light diffraction pattern of an electron-microscopical picture and the X-ray small angle scattering. By this means it can be proved for native collagen prepared by a special method that the density pattern of stained samples imaged in the electron microscopy is identical with the density pattern available from moist fibres. The reflex intensities of the small angle X-ray scattering are taken for calculating the density structure whereby the necessary phases are delivered by the electron microscopic examination combined with light diffraction.

Evaluation of the toxicity of mussels from 2 sites of the Moroccan Atlantic Coast (Jorf Lasfar and Oualidia) used as bioindicators of contamination :…

2012

Toxic substances generated by various human activities are spilled on different area of the Moroccan coast. Shellfishes can concentrate pollutants and have some adverse effects on human health through the food chain. Despite the strengthening of food safety rules, the involvement of chemical pollution of food on metabolic disorders is not known. To predict the impact of pollutants on the aquatic ecosystem and human health, the development of appropriate biomonitoring tools is required. We quantified heavy metals (Cd, Cr and Pb) in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from two sites of Moroccan Atlantic coast (industrial site Jorf Lasfar (JL) and touristic site Oualidia (OL)) due to the proxim…

MICROSCOPIC TECHNIQUES (SEM AND OM) AND ANALYTICAL APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZE CONSTITUTIVE MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE OF THE WOODEN FRAMES IN SICILY

2015

Nowadays artworks traditionally included in the category of applied or decorative arts are considered at the same level of fine arts getting over the old definition of minor art. According to this consideration an increasing number of studies and paper deals with the decorative arts and the Observatory for Decorative Arts in Italy “Maria Accascina” (OADI) was settled within the University of Palermo in order to study them. Nevertheless most studies deal with artistic and historic issues of applied arts and just few concern with the technique used, at least in the southern part of Italy. This paper is a systematic research concerning the constitutive materials and the executive techniques of…

Changes of the ratio between myelin thickness and axon diameter in the human developing sural nerve

1978

Axon caliber and myelin sheath thickness of individual nerve fibers were evaluated in the developing human sural nerve using three different methods of measurement: 1. ocular micrometer evaluation of large fibers, 2. photographic enlargements for evaluating large numbers of nerve fibers of all sizes, and 3. electron microscopic enlargements for more precise measurements in selected nerves. The average axonal diameter doubles from 5 months gestation to about 5 years of age. Large fiber group axons increase, during the same period, by a factor of 3--3.5 with a slight decrease thereafter. The myelin thickness increases more slowly, but continuously, between 5 months gestation until the age of …

Long-term efficacy of remission-maintenance regimens for ANCA-associated vasculitides.

2018

International audience; Objective - To compare long-term efficacy of remission-maintenance regimens in patients with newly diagnosed or relapsing antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA)-associated vasculitides. Methods - The 28-month Maintenance of Remission using Rituximab in Systemic ANCA-associated Vasculitis trial compared rituximab with azathioprine to maintain remission in patients with newly diagnosed or relapsing granulomatosis with polyangiitis, microscopic polyangiitis or renal-limited ANCA-associated vasculitis. Thereafter, prospective patient follow-up lasted until month 60. The primary endpoint was the major-relapse rate at month 60. Relapse and serious adverse event-free …

Rapid palatal expansion: the role of microcirculation

2015

Transverse palate modifications fall under expansive orthopedic therapy of the upper maxilla. The only practical approach to the problem on the transverse plane is that of performing the expansion of the maxillary arch through an opening of the median palatal suture. It is important to understand the changes of the vascular network in midpalatal suture following the starting of rapid maxillary expansion. It is critical to maintain the blood supply and circulation for the osteogenesis and bone remodeling after the expansion. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of rapid orthopedic expansion (REP) at the microcirculatory level through capillaroscopic examination. METHODS: Fift…

Angiogenesis in oral lichen planus: an in vivo and immunohistological evaluation.

2010

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an autoimmune disease with an inflammatory pathogenesis. The angiogenetic phenomenon is a mechanism at the base of the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory processes. The aim of this research is to evaluate the angiogenetic phenomenon, comparing an in vitro method with an in vivo one. Thirty OLP patients and 30 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Immunohistochemical analysis of the vascular-endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and vascular-endothelial adhesion molecules were carried out by the means of primary antibodies and anti-CD34, anti-VEGF, anti-CD106 antigen (VCAM-1) and anti-CD54 antigen (ICAM-1). Capillary density and others capillaroscopic paramete…

Clinical course and symptomatic prediagnostic period of patients with Wegener's granulomatosis and microscopic polyangiitis.

1998

The clinical course of 15 patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) and eight patients with microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) from one nephrological clinical center is presented for the period from 1984 to 1993, when testing for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) was gradually introduced into routine clinical practice. We found a high degree of prolonged time periods with symptoms attributable to WG or MPA until the specific diagnosis was made. Nine patients with WG and one patient with MPA had symptomatic prediagnostic periods of more than three years, which extended in one case up to twenty years. In these prediagnostic periods, often even severe flares of vasculitic activity res…

Electron microscopic study on the larval and adult corpus allatum of Oncopeltus fasciatus dallas (insecta, heteroptera)

1973

1. The ultrastructure of the corpora allata of last larval instars and adults of Oncopeltus was studied. The unpaired gland undergoes submicroscopic alterations and shows signs of degradation in old animals. The organ is partly covered and penetrated by corpus cardiacum tissue. Axons with different types of neurosecretory granules form synaptoid contacts with the corpus allatum cells.
