Luminescence of GeO2 glass, rutile-like and α-quartz-like crystals

2006

Abstract The luminescence of GeO 2 rutile-like crystals was studied. Crystals were grown from a melt of germanium dioxide and sodium bicarbonate mixture. Luminescence of the crystal was compared with that of sodium germanate glasses produced in reduced and oxidized conditions. A luminescence band at 2.3 eV was observed under N 2 laser (337 nm). At higher excitation photon energies and X-ray excitation an additional band at 3 eV appears in luminescence. The band at 2.3 eV possesses intra-center decay time constant about 100 μs at 290 K and about 200 μs at low temperature. Analogous luminescence was obtained in reduced sodium germanate glasses. No luminescence was observed in oxidized glasses…

Defect Luminescence Study in Tetragonal GeO2 Crystals

2000

The perovskite-or rutile-like GeO2 crystals were grown by the “top-seed” method from a fused germanium dioxide solution with sodium bicarbonate. The luminescence was studied under cathode-, x-ray, and photo-excitation. There are two luminescence bands at 550 nm and 400 nm with slow (100–200 µs) and fast (<20 ns) decay, respectively. The luminescence can be excited either by intra-center and electron-hole recombination processes. An analogous luminescence, however with strong non-exponential decay, is observed in glassy materials obtained from the frozen solution. Sodium-germanate glasses melted under oxygen deficient condition also possess similar luminescence, therefore the luminescence is…

Effects of waterborne iron overload and simulated winter conditions on acute physiological stress response of whitefish, Coregonus lavaretus

2003

Two-year-old whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) were exposed for 30 days to episodic iron overload in iron-rich humic water (5%) supplemented with inorganic iron (5 mg FeL(-1)). Two parallel laboratory exposures were performed, one under conditions simulating winter and the other under conditions simulating spring. After exposure, some of the fish were subjected to acute handling stress in the form of a short air challenge to reveal possible modification of the primary and secondary stress responses. In whitefish sampled without additional handling, iron accumulated in the liver (under spring conditions) and gills (under winter and spring conditions); plasma catecholamine and beta-estradiol (b…

The influence of advanced glycation endproducts (AGE) on the expression of human endothelial adhesion molecules.

1998

Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) possibly play a dominant role in the pathogenesis of macrovascular disease in diabetes. Recent studies could demonstrate that glycated albumin (AGE-BSA) was able to stimulate vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM.1) on endothelial cells. The aim of this study was to find out if AGE-BSA was not only able to enhance the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, but also of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and E-Selectin on human endothelial cells. Stimulation of endothelial cells with AGE-BSA for six hours predominantly increased the expression of VCAM-1, but ICAM-1 and E-Selectin were also upregulated as shown by immunoilluminometric a…

High-performance liquid chromatographic study of the regulation of phospholipid metabolism in cultured adrenocortical cells

1994

Abstract A rapid high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the separation of phospholipids was developed for minute samples of total lipids (ca. 200 μg). The method was applied to the study of the phospholipid metabolism in adrenocortical cell cultures. A complete separation of the different cellular phospholipid classes was achieved in 40 min. Good resolution of the phospholipid peaks was obtained, which allowed the collection of each individual class of phospholipids for further analysis of radioactivity and fatty acid composition by gas chromatography. When cells were incubated with [U-14C]glycerol or [U-14C]palmitate the bulk of the radioactivity was found in cellular ph…

Glycosylamines of 4,6-O-butylidene-α-d-glucopyranose: synthesis and characterization of glycosylamines, and the crystal structure of 4,6-O-butylidene…

2002

A total of nine glycosylamines of 4,6-O-butylidene-α-D-glucopyranose were synthesized using primary amines having various groups in their ortho- or para-positions. Among these, six are monoglycosylamines, including one primary glycosylamine, and three are bis-glycosylamines. All these compounds were characterized by 1H, 1H–1H COSY, 1H–13C COSY and 13C NMR spectroscopy and FTIR spectra. The FAB mass spectra provided the molecular weights of the products by exhibiting the corresponding molecular ion peaks. The crystal structure of 4,6-O-butylidene-N-(o-chlorophenyl)-β-D-glucopyranosylamine revealed the C-1 glycosylation, the β-anomeric nature, and the 4C1 chair conformation of the saccharide …

The role of nanopowder particle surfaces and grain boundary defects in the sintering of ZnO ceramics

2012

This work focuses on the characteristics of sintered ZnO ceramics and explores the role of source powder morphology in the process of sintering. The source ZnO powders had grained (d = 100 nm) and tetrapod-like (d=50-100 nm, l=3−10 μm) morphologies, they were compacted and sintered at 1200° C. The results have shown that ceramics sintered from the grained powder exhibit relatively high (8%) porosity at grain boundaries and as cavities within grains, which facilitates brittleness. Photoluminescence spectra for these ceramics besides a narrow exitonic band contain a broad "green" luminescence band attributed to defect states. The second ceramics sintered from the tetrapod-like powder has lowe…

Application of graphene quantum dots in heavy metals and pesticides detection

2020

Graphene Quantum Dots (GQDs) were produced using electrochemical oxidation of graphite rods. Obtained GQDs were gamma-irradiated in the presence of the N atoms source, ethylenediamine. Both structural and morphological changes were investigated using UV-Vis, X-ray photoelectron and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy. The ability of both types of dots to change PL intensity in the presence of pesticides such as malathion and glyphosate, as well as copper (II) ions was detected. These preliminary results indicated a high potential of produced GQDs to be applied as non-enzymatic PL sensors for the detection of selected pesticides and metal ions. 26th Interna…

Immunogenicity of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) in BALB/c mice: identification of an H2-Kd-restricted CTL epitope

2000

Enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) is a novel marker gene product, which is readily detectable using techniques of fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, or macroscopic imaging. In the present studies, we have examined the immunogenicity of EGFP in murine models. A stable transfectant of the transplantable CMS4 sarcoma of BALB/c origin expressing EGFP, CMS4-EGFP-Zeo, was generated. Splenocytes harvested from mice immunized with a recombinant adenovirus expressing EGFP (Ad-EGFP) were restimulated in vitro with CMS4-EGFP-Zeo. Effector lymphocytes displayed strong cytotoxicity against CMS4-EGFP-Zeo, but not against mock-transfected CMS4-Zeo tumor cells. A number of candidate H2-Kd-bin…

Ultra-Low Catalyst Loading as a Concept in Economical and Sustainable Modern Chemistry: The Contribution of Ferrocenylpolyphosphane Ligands

2007

The challenge of sustainability in modern chemistry will be met with new technologies and processes provided significant progress is made in several key research areas, such as the expansion of chemistry from renewable feedstock, the design of environmentally benign chemicals and solvents, the minimization of depletive resources, and the development of high-performance catalysis. In this prospect, ligand chemistry is a pivotal science that links modern-organic,-inorganic, -organometallic, and -coordination chemistry through a vast number of valuable applications, precisely associated to catalysis. We review in this article our recent work on catalysis promoted by original ferrocenyl tetra-,…
