Mother tongue is one of the most important aspects of preserving identity o f national or ethnic minority. Being in force since 2005 the Law on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Language minorities in Poland secures the right to preserve and maintain their language and to introduce it as an assistant language in municipalities. This papers studies different issues related to minorities rights. After trying to define what should be intended as minorities in contemporary West societies and exploring if it is possible to make a difference between old and new minorities, the research focuses on the main issues that are at stake. This chapter discusses early immersion in a minority language in two bilingual countries, Canada and Finland. In Canada, immersion in the minority language, French, has been implemented since the mid-1960s and Finland introduced immersion in Swedish in the mid-1980s. As the core features of immersion education evolve in tandem with second language education theorizing (particularly as it relates to the interdependence and hybridity between and within languages), so too does the need to revisit the relevance of these core features across different contexts. The current study aims to explore team teaching as it is manifested in bilingual interactional patterns in a preschool classroom in Finland. The data was collected in a preschool classroom where a bilingual pedagogy in Finnish (majority language) and Swedish (minority language) was implemented with monolingual Finnishspeaking children. Video recordings were made while two teachers with different predefined language roles were team teaching a class of 20 children during two circle times.
