Peer ethnicity and achievement: a meta-analysis into the compositional effect
2010
This study reports a meta-analysis on the effects of ethnic minority share in school on achievement test scores. Best evidence from the studies that have appeared thus far on this topic shows that these compositional effects appear small in general, but may be larger when the ethnic minority group is African Americans in the USA, than when the minority group consists of immigrants. A high share of students from an ethnic minority group seems to affect the achievement from students belonging to the same ethnic group more, than the achievement of students belonging to the ethnic majority or to other ethnic minority groups. Effects of the share of immigrants on test scores of ethnic majority s…
The protection of minority shareholders during delisting in Germany and in the U.K.
2020
The thesis seeks to compare the protection of minority shareholders during delisting in Germany and in the UK. Delisting refers to a publicly traded company leaving the stock market. In order to compare the protection afforded by the relevant legislator the thesis first seeks to give an overview of the interests touched upon by delisting, finding the main risk for minority shareholders is unlike often assumed not a loss of value but the loss of the share’s tradability. The thesis then compares the approach taken towards the problem and the instruments utilized by both legislators. Here the thesis finds that the German law represents a stricter and inflexible solution, while the British law …
‘Zeitgeist’and minority influence—where is the causality: A comment on Clark (1990)
1995
Does the mood of the time (Zeitgeist) facilitate the influence minorities are able to exercise, or is it itself a direct product of minority influence ? It is argued, from a social psychological definition of the minority-majority relation, that the former interpretation fails to explain many of the observed effects and in particular the conversion effect. A model is offered that is consistent with the second interpretation.
Unity in Discourse, Diversity in Practice: The One Person One Language Policy in Bilingual Families
2013
When parents with different first languages have a child, and want the child to become bilingual in both languages, many parents adopt the one person – one language (OPOL) strategy. This chapter uses nexus analysis (Scollon R, Scollon SW, Nexus analysis. Discourse and the emerging internet. Routledge, London, 2004) to carry out a discourse analysis of ways in which this strategy is motivated by parents and ways it is enacted in conversations between parents and children, in three Swedish-Finnish bilingual families with 3–4 year old children in Finland. We also look at how the children participate in the negotiation of family language policy. Parents were interviewed about their own language…
Mniejszość Niemiecka w prasie regionalnej w sytuacji konfliktu. Framing i agenda medialna w ramach sporu o „Duże Opole”
2017
Linguistic intergroup bias at school : an exploratory study of black and white children in France and their implicit attitude towards another
2014
International audience; " Linguistic intergroup bias " (LIB) (Maass et al., 2000) was investigated in French elementary schools between children of the French majority group (White children of European heritage) and a French minority group (Black children from Sub-Saharan Africa). Participants (N = 360; 7–11-year-old; mean age = 10.36, SD = .85) were shown photographs presenting a target character (ingroup or outgroup) engaging in a positive behavior (e.g., a helping action) or a negative behavior (e.g., an aggressive action). Demonstrations of ingroup favoritism with no outgroup derogation were expected for White children from the majority group. These hypotheses were confirmed. Unexpected…
Paradise Lost? The Collapse of Dutch Multiculturalism and the Birth of Islamophobic Post-Liberalism
2013
The aim of this chapter is to shed light on the integration debate in the Netherlands, and especially on the prominent role of Islam and cultural issues in this debate (Boomkens 2010: 307). Arguably more than in any other European country, anti-Islamic sentiment has produced political consequences, including the formation of three political parties on a principally anti-Islamic platform (Leefbar Nederland (Liveable Netherlands), List Pim Fortuyn and Partij voor de Vrijheid (Freedom Party)) since 2000 and the dismantling of key aspects of state-supported multiculturalism, including a cessation of ethnic monitoring of labour market participation, the withdrawal of national-level funding for m…
Ewolucja roli mniejszości niemieckiej w Polsce oraz Polonii w Niemczech w stosunkach polsko-niemieckich pod koniec XX wieku i na początku XXI wieku
2016
Both German minority in Poland and Polonia in Germany constitute undoubtedly – along with the history, geographical location and common membership of the Republic of Poland’s and German Federal Republic’s to EU and NATO – one of more important determinants of relations between both states. As to the issue of execution of rights of Germans in Poland and Polonia in German the breakthrough took place as a result of signing Treaty on good neighborhood and friendly cooperation on 17.06.1991. On both sides though there are the charges formulated about the lack of full execution of the Treaty provisions. The subject of controversy is, on the one hand, their status – inequality of terminology used …
