Enumerative Aspects of the Gross-Siebert Program

2015

For the last decade, Mark Gross and Bernd Siebert have worked with a number of collaborators to push forward a program whose aim is an understanding of mirror symmetry. In this chapter, we’ll present certain elements of the “Gross-Siebert” program. We begin by sketching its main themes and goals. Next, we review the basic definitions and results of two main tools of the program, logarithmic and tropical geometry. These tools are then used to give tropical interpretations of certain enumerative invariants. We study in detail the tropical pencil of elliptic curves in a toric del Pezzo surface. We move on to a basic illustration of mirror symmetry, Gross’s tropical construction for \(\mathbb{P…

Gain lifetime measurement of a Ni-like Ag soft X-ray laser

2012

International audience; Experimental results of a two-stage Ni-like Ag soft X-ray laser operated in a seed-amplifier configuration are presented. Both targets were pumped applying the double-pulse grazing incidence technique with intrinsic travelling wave excitation. The injection of the seed X-ray laser into the amplifier target was realized by a spherical mirror. The results show amplification of the seed X-ray laser and allow for a direct measurement of the gain lifetime. The experimental configuration is suitable for providing valuable input for computational simulations. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Probing mechanical quantum coherence with an ultracold-atom meter

2011

We propose a scheme to probe quantum coherence in the state of a nano-cantilever based on its magnetic coupling (mediated by a magnetic tip) with a spinor Bose Einstein condensate (BEC). By mapping the BEC into a rotor, its coupling with the cantilever results in a gyroscopic motion whose properties depend on the state of the cantilever: the dynamics of one of the components of the rotor angular momentum turns out to be strictly related to the presence of quantum coherence in the state of the cantilever. We also suggest a detection scheme relying on Faraday rotation, which produces only a very small back-action on the BEC and it is thus suitable for a continuous detection of the cantilever'…

Connectivity patterns during music listening: Evidence for action-based processing in musicians

2017

Musical expertise is visible both in the morphology and functionality of the brain. Recent research indicates that functional integration between multi-sensory, somato-motor, default-mode (DMN), and salience (SN) networks of the brain differentiates musicians from non-musicians during resting state. Here, we aimed at determining whether brain networks differentially exchange information in musicians as opposed to non-musicians during naturalistic music listening. Whole-brain graph-theory analyses were performed on participants' fMRI responses. Group-level differences revealed that musicians' primary hubs comprised cerebral and cerebellar sensorimotor regions whereas non-musicians' dominant …

Reshaping Field of View and Resolution with Segmented Reflectors: Bridging the Gap between Rotating and Solid-State LiDARs

2020

This paper describes the first simulations and experimental results of a novel segmented Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) reflector. Large portions of the rotating LiDAR data are typically discarded due to occlusion or a misplaced field of view (FOV). The proposed reflector solves this problem by reflecting the entire FOV of the rotating LiDAR towards a target. Optical simulation results, using Zemax OpticStudio, suggest that adding a reflector reduces the range of the embedded LiDAR with only 3 . 9 . Furthermore, pattern simulation results show that a radially reshaped FOV can be configured to maximize point cloud density, maximize coverage, or a combination. Here, the maximum density i…

Mirror neurons : physiological requirement for emotional empathy and social and moral behaviour of human and nonhuman primates

2018

Fil: Claramonte Sanz, Vicente. Universitat de València. Departament de Filosofia. Área de Lògica i Filosofia de la Ciència; España. Claramonte Sanz, V. (2018).

The function of mirror neurons in the learning process

2017

In the last years, Neurosciences have developed very much, being elaborated many important theories scientific research in the field. The main goal of neuroscience is to understand how groups of neurons interact to create the behavior. Neuroscientists studying the action of molecules, genes and cells. It also explores the complex interactions involved in motion perception, thoughts, emotions and learning. Brick fundamental nervous system is the nerve cell, neuron. Neurons exchange information by sending electrical signals and chemical through connections called synapses. Discovered by a group of Italian researchers from the University of Parma, neurons - mirror are a special class of nerve …

A multi-domain approach for smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of highly complex flows

2018

Abstract An efficient and accurate method is proposed to solve the incompressible flow momentum and continuity equations in computational domains partitioned into subdomains in the framework of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method. The procedure does not require any overlap of the subdomains, which would result in the increase of the computational effort. Perfectly matching solutions are obtained at the surfaces separating neighboring blocks. The block interfaces can be both planar and curved surfaces allowing to easily decompose even geometrically complex domains. The smoothing length of the kernel function is maintained constant in each subdomain, while changing between blocks where…

Predicting perceived visual complexity of abstract patterns using computational measures: The influence of mirror symmetry on complexity perception

2017

Visual complexity is relevant for many areas ranging from improving usability of technical displays or websites up to understanding aesthetic experiences. Therefore, many attempts have been made to relate objective properties of images to perceived complexity in artworks and other images. It has been argued that visual complexity is a multidimensional construct mainly consisting of two dimensions: A quantitative dimension that increases complexity through number of elements, and a structural dimension representing order negatively related to complexity. The objective of this work is to study human perception of visual complexity utilizing two large independent sets of abstract patterns. A w…

The role of synergies within generative models of action execution and recognition: A computational perspective

2015

Controlling the body – given its huge number of degrees of freedom – poses severe computational challenges. Mounting evidence suggests that the brain alleviates this problem by exploiting “synergies”, or patterns of muscle activities (and/or movement dynamics and kinematics) that can be combined to control action, rather than controlling individual muscles of joints [1–10]. D’Ausilio et al. [11] explain how this view of motor organization based on synergies can profoundly change the way we interpret studies of action recognition in humans and monkeys, and in particular the controversy on the “granularity” of the mirror neuron system (MNs): whether it encodes either (lower) kinematic aspects…
