Griscelli-Syndrom: ein Fallbericht
2003
Background: Griscelli syndrome is a rare disorder with poor prognosis. It is characterized by silver-grey hair or strands of silver-grey hair in childhood, and variable cellular immunodeficiency. The course of the untreated disease is fatal. Recurrent episodes of fever and lymphohistocytic infiltration of organs lead to hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, pancytopenia, and progressive neurological impairment. Prognosis on morbidity and lethality depends on an early diagnosis. Patient: The girl we report on suffers from Griscelli syndrome. She developed normally and only her grey strands of hair, grey eyebrows, and eyelids were conspicuous. With the age of 4 years she presented with a first…
Expression of fibronectin splice variants and oncofetal glycosylated fibronectin in the synovial membranes of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and …
2002
The aim of this study was to define and compare the expression of fibronectin (Fn) isoforms in synovial tissue of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA).Using monoclonal antibodies specific for total Fn, extra domain (ED)-A Fn, ED-B Fn, and oncofetal glycosylated Fn, we studied the expression of the Fn isoforms in synovium. Furthermore, in situ hybridization for the detection of ED-B Fn mRNA including a double labeling technique for the detection of cell type was applied.Strong expression of total Fn, ED-A Fn, oncofetal glycosylated Fn and, to a lesser extent, ED-B Fn could be demonstrated in the synovial lining layer in both RA and OA. Stromal and vessel expression…
Treatment of giardiasis reverses "active" coeliac disease to "latent" coeliac disease.
2001
In patients with coeliac disease, a regression of intestinal damage without a gluten-free diet is a very rare event. We describe a young child with diarrhoea, intestinal mucosa atrophy and positive serum anti-endomysial and anti-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) antibodies during intestinal giardiasis infection. He showed normal intestinal mucosa architecture and negative anti-endomysial and anti-tTG antibodies after his giardiasis was cured, although he continued to assume a normal diet. Re-evaluations on a 6-monthly basis showed that he was symptom free, and all haemato-chemical parameters were within normal limits. Three years after the initial diagnosis, a third intestinal biopsy showe…
IκB kinase-driven nuclear factor-κB activation in patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
2011
Background Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is a transcriptional factor of different inflammatory patterns involved in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that is tightly controlled by IκB kinase (IKK) complex. Objective We investigated the dysregulation of IKK-driven NF-κB activation in patients with asthma and COPD. Methods We assessed IKKα and IKKβ expression and activation, their regulation by glucocorticosteroids, and their involvement in IL-8 synthesis in PBMCs isolated from asthmatic patients, healthy smokers (HSs), patients with COPD, and control subjects. PBMCs from control subjects were stimulated with TNF-α and cigarette smoke extract in the presence or absence of fl…
HCV-associated cryoglobulinaemia presenting with vasculitis, hepatitis, and glomerulonephritis—a therapeutic dilemma
1996
treated by diet. One year prior to presentation the patient suffered a transitory ischaemic brain attack concomitant with the onset of arterial hypertension, which was subsequently treated with calcium antagonists and beta blockers. Purpura-like skin lesions were noted which were reported to have occurred intermittently over a period of 5 years on both legs and occasionally on the arms. Proteinuria and haematuria were noted during periods with skin lesions.
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV)-specific CD4+ T lymphocyte response in AIDS patients with no past or current HCMV disease following HAART.
2003
Abstract Background: The incidence of Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) end-organ disease has dramatically decreased since the implementation of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAARTs), but the precise immune mechanism whereby HCMV is controlled remains to be elucidated. Objectives: To investigate the effect of (HAART) on CD4 + T-cell immunity to HCMV in AIDS patients with no past or current HCMV disease. Study design: Seventeen patients were prospectively examined for CD4 + (CD45RO + and CD45 RA + ) T-cell counts (flow cytometry), HIV RNA load (Amplicor HIV test), HCMV leukoDNAemia and HCMV DNA in urine (nested PCR), lymphoproliferative response (LPR) to HCMV, phytohemagglutinin (PHA) a…
Longitudinal analysis of human cytomegalovirus glycoprotein B (gB)-specific and neutralizing antibodies in AIDS patients either with or without cytom…
2001
Serum neutralizing and glycoprotein B (gB)-specific antibody levels were monitored prospectively in AIDS patients who either did or did not develop human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) end-organ disease, to delineate further the role of antibodies in protecting against HCMV disease. Antibody levels declined substantially (at least 4-fold) only in patients who developed HCMV disease; this decline in turn occurred concurrently with antigenemia. Nevertheless, AIDS patients who remained free of HCMV disease and did not become antigenemic during the follow-up period maintained stable levels of serum antibodies, with only minor fluctuations. The impact of HAART on the levels of functional anti-HCMV antib…
