On the reactivation of a large landslide induced by rainfall in highly fissured clays

Abstract The paper discusses the field investigations, geotechnical characterization and time evolution of horizontal displacements in a wide landslide. The latter, triggered by an earthquake occurring in September 2002, is located in Sicily and involves a thick body of stiff and highly fissured clays belonging to a Varicoloured Clay formation. In order to characterise the reactivation of landslide mechanisms induced by rainfall, a three-year monitoring programme (2008–2011) was implemented to measure rain, pore water pressures, and deep and superficial displacements. Abstract In the standard AK growth model we introduce the threat of an ecological catastrophe and study the consequences for the economic variables in the long-run. We extend the basic framework by considering two environmental externalities: the first one is local and gives account of the marginal damage from emissions flow; the second one is aggregate, or global, and relates to the extreme damage which may happen if the accumulated stock of pollutants is on the threshold of a worldwide catastrophe. Nursing Students Managing Deteriorating Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract Background The objective was to summarize knowledge and systematically collect and quantify meta-analytical results regarding the effects of high-fidelity simulation in nursing education to improve students' ability to recognize and respond to deteriorating patients. Methods In total, 4048 citations were screened, 40 articles were selected for full-text screening, and 14 articles were included. Six articles were subsequently included in the meta-analysis. Results Knowledge and performance increased after simulation. Four studies reported an increase in self-confidence. Estimation of Location and Activation Time of Purkinje Myocardial Junctions from Sparse and Noisy Endocardial Electrical Samples

The activation of the myocardial muscle is triggered by Purkinje-myocardial junctions (PMJs), which are the terminal sites of the specialised cardiac conduction system (CCS). Obtaining the location of the PMJs and other sources of endocardial ectopic activity would be desirable for building computer models of cardiac electrophysiology and planning ablation interventions. We present a method to estimate the location and activation times of endocardial electrical sources in a 3D model of the ventricles. Visualization of Simulated Arrhythmias due to Gap Junctions

New computational models are able to simulate details of cardiac cell networks. Their results allow a better understanding of the functionality of the heart and suggest possible actions to reduce non-fatal premature beats that can give rise to serious diseases. We developed a user-friendly interface to organize Neuron simulations and to present in real-time a three-dimensional representation of the electrical activity due to the gap junctions which interconnect the cells inside cardiac tissues. All physiological parameters were set according to real experimental observations and compared against different types of arrhythmias, retrieved from the Physionet Data Base.

Abstract In 1994, Brockhoff and Skovgaard presented the so-called assessor model, including a “scaling coefficient” expressing the predisposition of a panelist to spread more or less his scores than the panel on a given sensory descriptor. This paper discusses potential scaling causes, and then proposes a decomposition of the scaling coefficient into two components: (i) an overall scaling coefficient, independent of the descriptors, expressing a psychological trend of the panelist towards the scoring task in general; (ii) a corrected scaling coefficient for each descriptor, expressing specific sensitivity of the panelist to the descriptor. Internal Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) in a (Nearly) Representative Dutch Community Sample

The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire is a widely used instrument for assessment of emotional, external and restrained eating. The aim of the present study is to (i) analyse its internal structure using exploratory structural equation modelling; (ii) to assess its measurement invariance with respect to sex, BMI, age and level of education; and (iii) to evaluate the relations of the factors with these variables.
