Effect of Short-Term and UV Irradiation Aging on the Behaviour of SBS-Modified Bitumen
2022
To obtain road bitumen with improved temperature and fatigue resistance, polymers and/or rubbers could be added to it. A particularly suitable polymer for bitumen modification is styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymer but limited information is available about the ageing behaviour of modified binders. In this work, two neat bitumens, with different penetration grades, and two SBS-modified bitumens, containing different SBS amounts, were selected, and their short-term and UVB ageing behaviour were investigated considering dynamic shear rheometry and Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transformation InfraRed spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Short-time ageing behaviour was investigated performing…
The consequences of regulation of desat1 expression for pheromone emission and detection in Drosophila melanogaster.
2010
AbstractSensory communication depends on the precise matching between the emission and the perception of sex- and species-specific signals; understanding both the coevolutionary process and the genes involved in both production and detection is a major challenge. desat1 determines both aspects of communication—a mutation in desat1 simultaneously alters both sex pheromone emission and perception in Drosophila melanogaster flies. We investigated whether the alteration of pheromonal perception is a consequence of the altered production of pheromones or if the two phenotypes are independently controlled by the same locus. Using several genetic tools, we were able to separately manipulate the tw…
Current signature based fault diagnosis of field-oriented and direct torque-controlled induction motor drives
2017
In this article, the operation of three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors is analysed under faulty conditions in closed loop with state-of-the-art controllers, namely, the field-oriented control...
Measuring health promotion in a sports club setting: a modified Delphi study
2019
Abstract Background The settings-based approach has become an increasing focus in health promotion since the World Health Organization’s 1986 Ottawa Charter. Schools and cities have implemented this approach, but development within sports clubs is limited. Thus, an internationally validated measurement of health promotion within this setting is lacking. Methods A modified Delphi study was completed to develop an international evaluation tool grounded in the settings-based approach. Expert panelists from academia, sports and health sectors were invited to participate in 3 online rounds. Items were generated or selected based on 3 prior Delphi-based studies and 2 nationally validated scales. …
The nuclear protein Sge1 of Fusarium oxysporum is required for parasitic growth
2009
Dimorphism or morphogenic conversion is exploited by several pathogenic fungi and is required for tissue invasion and/or survival in the host. We have identified a homolog of a master regulator of this morphological switch in the plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. This non-dimorphic fungus causes vascular wilt disease in tomato by penetrating the plant roots and colonizing the vascular tissue. Gene knock-out and complementation studies established that the gene for this putative regulator, SGE1 (SIX Gene Expression 1), is essential for pathogenicity. In addition, microscopic analysis using fluorescent proteins revealed that Sge1 is localized in the nucleus, is no…
Rheological Behaviors of Waste Polyethylene Modified Asphalt Binder: Statistical Analysis of Interlaboratory Testing Results
2023
This article investigated the effect of waste polyethylene (PE) on the modified asphalt binders' rheological behavior from a statistical point of view. The interlaboratory testing results from the RILEM Technical Committee 279 Valorization of Waste and Secondary Materials for Roads Task Group 1 were used for this purpose. First, an unaged 70/100 penetration graded neat binder was selected as the reference material. Next, a single 5 % content of waste PE additives (PE-pellets and PE-shreds) was mixed with a 95 % neat binder to prepare two PE modified binders. Then, dynamic shear rheometer-based temperature-frequency sweep tests were performed over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies…
Separate regression modelling of the Gaussian and Exponential components of an EMG response from respiratory physiology.
2014
If Y1 \sim N(\mu ;\sigma^2) and Y2 \sim Exp(\nu), with Y1 independent of Y2, then their sum Y = Y1 +Y2 follows an Exponentially Modified Gaussian (EMG) distribution. In many applications it is of interest to model the two components separately, in order to investigate their (possibly) different important predictors. We show how this can be done through a GAMLSS with EMG response, and apply this separate regression modelling strategy to a dataset on lung function variables from the SAPALDIA cohort study.
Horizontal gene transfer of atrazine-degrading genes (atz) from Agrobacterium tumefaciens St96-4 pADP1::Tn5 to bacteria of maize-cultivated soil
2005
International audience; The plasmid pADP1::Tn5 derived from pADP1[Atr(+)] carrying a TnS transposon conferring kanamycin and streptomycin resistances was constructed and introduced in Agrobacterium tumefaciens St96-4. This genetically modified strain was inoculated (similar to 108 cfu g(-1)) in potted soils planted with maize and treated or not with atrazine (1.5 mg kg(-1)). Bulk and maize rhizosphere soils were sampled 39 days after planting to look for soil indigenous bacteria that had acquired pADP1::Tn5. Four transconjugants were isolated from four different soil samples. The estimated transfer frequency of pADP1::Tn5 was 10(-4) per donor. Maize rhizosphere and atrazine treatment had no…
Electrochemistry of methylene blue at an alkanethiol modified electrode
2012
International audience; Gold surfaces were derivatized with decanethiol. The electrochemistry of methylene blue at these modified electrodes was investigated in function of the gold cleaning process and compared with the results obtained at a bare gold electrode. Cyclic voltammetry at low methylene blue concentrations (c(MB) <= 16 mu M) yielded surface behavior data. The properties of the film vary with the electrode pretreatment. Without electrochemical cleaning step, the standard potential at a gold electrode modified with 1-decanethiol is nearly the same as on a bare gold electrode. On the other hand, when the electrode is electrochemically cleaned before adsorption of the alkanethiols, …
Violation of the equivalence principle from light scalar dark matter
2018
In this paper, we study the local observational consequences of a violation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle induced by models of light scalar Dark Matter (DM). We focus on two different models where the scalar field couples linearly or quadratically to the standard model of matter fields. For both these cases, we derive the solutions of the scalar field. We also derive from first principles the expressions for two types of observables: (i) the local comparison of two atomic sensors that are differently sensitive to the constants of Nature and (ii) the local differential acceleration between two test-masses with different compositions. For the linear coupling, we recover that the signa…
