Charged supramolecular assemblies of surfactant molecules in gas phase
2015
The aim of this review is to critically analyze recent literature on charged supramolecular assemblies formed by surfactant molecules in gas phase. Apart our specific interest on this research area, the stimuli to undertake the task arise from the widespread theoretical and applicative benefits emerging from a comprehensive view of this topic. In fact, the study of the formation, stability, and physicochemical peculiarities of non-covalent assemblies of surfactant molecules in gas phase allows to unveil interesting aspects such as the role of attractive, repulsive, and steric intermolecular interactions as driving force of supramolecular organization in absence of interactions with surround…
Exploring Chemical Reactivity in Enzyme Catalyzed Processes Using QM/MM Methods: An Application to Dihydrofolate Reductase
2015
Enzymes are the catalysts used by living organisms to accelerate chemical processes under physiological conditions. In this chapter, we illustrate the current view about the origin of their extraordinary rate enhancement based on molecular simulations and, in particular, on methods based on the combination of Quantum Mechanics and Molecular Mechanics potentials which provide a solution to treat the chemical reactivity of these large and complex molecular systems. Computational studies on Dihydrofolate Reductase have been selected as a conductor wire to present the evolution and difficulties to model chemical reactivity in enzymes. The results discussed here show that experimental observatio…
Molecular precursors of mesostructured silica materials in the atrane route: A DFT/GIAO/NBO theoretical study
2007
Abstract Quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory have been carried out to investigate two assumed molecular precursors and identified as silatranes (N[OCH2CH2]3Si–OCH2CH2N–(CH2CH2OH)2 and N[OCH2CH2]3Si–OCH2CH2N–(CH2CH2OH)2Na+) which are present in the synthesis of mesoporous silica based material namely “the atrane route”. One of the ways in this synthesis leads to the well-known MCM-41. Additionally, in this work has been also investigated two others molecules such as triethanolamine (TEAH3) and sodatrane which are present in the medium. Gas phase and solution equilibrium geometries of the previous molecules were fully optimized at B3LYP level, modeling solvent effect…
DFT calculation of structures and NMR chemical shifts of simple models of small diameter zigzag single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)
2011
Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt-shape molecules (cyclic acenes) and model single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were fully optimized at the unrestricted level of density functional theory (UB3LYP/6-31G*). The models of SWCNTs were selected to get some insight into the potential changes of NMR chemical shift upon systematic increase of the molecular size. The theoretical NMR chemical shifts were calculated at the B3LYP/pcS-2 level of theory using benzene as reference. In addition, the change of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of cyclic acenes. Both geometrical and NMR parameters were extrapolated t…
1H, 13C, 15N NMR, ESI mass spectral and single crystal X-ray structural characterization of three spiro[pyrrolidine-2,3′-oxindoles]
2006
Abstract Three spiro[pyrrolidine-2,3′-oxindoles], 1,1′,2,2′,5′,6′,7′,7′a-octahydro-2-oxo-1′-phenyl-spiro[3H-indole-3,3′-[3H]-pyrrolizine]-2′-carboxylic acid methyl ester (1), 1,1′,2,2′,5′,6′,7′,7′a-octahydro-2-oxo-1′-nitro-2′-phenyl-spiro[3H-indole-3, 3′-[3H]-pyrrolizine] (2) and 1,1′,2,2′,5′,6′,7′,7′a-octahydro-2-oxo-1′-nitro-2′-(4″-chlorophenyl)-spiro[3H-indole-3,3′-[3H]-pyrrolizine] (3) have been synthesized and their 1H, 13C and 15N spectra assigned. The chemical shift assignments are based on Pulsed Field Gradient (PFG) Double Quantum Filter (DQF) 1H, 1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), PFG 1H, 13C Heteronuclear Multiple Quantum Coherence (HMQC) and PFG 1H,X (X = 13C and 15N) Heteronuc…
Electronic Structures and Spectroscopic Properties of 6π-Electron Ring Molecules and Ions E2N2 and E42+ (E = S, Se, Te)
2004
The electronic structures and molecular properties of square-planar 6π-electron ring molecules and ions E2N2 and E42+ (E = S, Se, Te) were studied using various ab initio methods and density functionals. All species were found to contain singlet diradical character in their electronic structures. Detailed analysis of the CAS wave function of S2N2 in terms of different valence bond structures gives the largest weight for a Lewis-type singlet diradical VB structure in which the two unpaired electrons reside on nitrogen atoms, though the relative importance of the different VB structures is highly dependent on the level of theory. The diradical character in both E2N2 and E42+ was found to incr…
Understanding retention and metabolization of aroma compounds using an in vitro model of oral mucosa.
2020
International audience; The mechanism leading to aroma persistence during eating is not fully described. This study aims at better understanding the role of the oral mucosa in this phenomenon. Release of 14 volatile compounds from different chemical classes was studied after exposure to in vitro models of oral mucosa, at equilibrium by Gas-Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detection (GC-FID) and in dynamic conditions by Proton Transfer Reaction- Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS). Measurements at equilibrium showed that mucosal hydration reduced the release of only two compounds, pentan-2-one and linalool (p < 0.05), and suggested that cells could metabolize aroma compounds from different chemical fa…
Dinuclear chloroneodymium quinolinylcarboxylates: The molecular structures affected by water and the catalytic behavior toward isoprene polymerization
2016
Abstract A series of dinuclear chloroneodymium quinolinylcarboxylate compounds was synthesized and characterized. The nature and importance of metal-organic aggregations have been considered as an important factor regarding the molecular structure and catalytic performance. The neodymium center in all the title compounds exhibits the coordination numbers of 8. Cage aggregation was observed in the solid state, and the cyclic arrangement was achieved when water molecules were incorporated into the structure. Upon the activation with Al(i-Bu)3, all the title neodymium compounds form the efficient catalysts for isoprene polymerization. The catalytic activities are not strongly affected by the m…

Biomolecule-corona formation confers resistance of bacteria to nanoparticle-induced killing: Implications for the design of improved nanoantibiotics
2018
Abstract Multidrug-resistant bacterial infections are a global health threat. Nanoparticles are thus investigated as novel antibacterial agents for clinical practice, including wound dressings and implants. We report that nanoparticles' bactericidal activity strongly depends on their physical binding to pathogens, including multidrug-resistant primary clinical isolates, such as Staphylococcus aureus , Klebsiella pneumoniae or Enterococcus faecalis . Using controllable nanoparticle models, we found that nanoparticle-pathogen complex formation was enhanced by small nanoparticle size rather than material or charge, and was prevented by 'stealth' modifications. Nanoparticles seem to preferentia…
