Esistenza, dialettica, valore nel pensiero di Giuseppe Cantillo
2021
The article aims to place Giuseppe Cantillo’s studies collected in his latest two books, focused respectively on Hegel and dialectics and Jaspers and existence, in the overall research itinerary of the Italian philosopher. The paper seeks to highlight the coherence and conceptual openness of Cantillo’s investigation of history, the human being’s existential conditions, as well as of its theological implications. This meditation is characterized, on the one hand, by the anchorage to the transcendental dimension of thought and, on the other hand, by the adherence to the concreteness of history. These two aspects are linked by the sphere of values, which shed light on the finalistic and person…

The automated assesment of artery hemodynamic parameters from ultrasound video
2012
The custom designed video processing software for analysis of B-mode and Doppler-mode ultrasound video has been proposed in this work. The software allows adjusting user-defined thresholds and tolerance levels to enhance contour detection in noisy and artifacted ultrasound images. The developed software is able to evaluate 16 hemodynamic parameters (artery diameter, pulse rate and flow velocity related parameters) in each cardiac cycle. The measurements were performed intermittently recording artery diameter (B-mode) and flow velocity (Doppler-mode). Software has validated in femoral artery measurements. The hemodynamic parameters computed by software were consistent with those obtained by …
Polyvascular subclinical atherosclerosis in familial hypercholesterolemia: The role of cholesterol burden and gender
2019
International audience; BACKGROUND AND AIM:Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) is a genetic disease characterized by a heterogeneous phenotype. The assessment of cardiovascular (CV) risk is challenging for HeFH. Cholesterol burden (CB) allows to estimate the lifelong exposure to high levels of cholesterol. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of subclinical atherosclerosis and the relationship between atherosclerosis and the CB in a sample of HeFH patients, focusing on sex-related differences.METHODS AND RESULTS:154 asymptomatic HeFH subjects underwent coronary-artery-calcium score (CACs) and Doppler ultrasound of carotid and femoral arteries. Yearly lipid pro…
Inflammation, atherosclerotic burden and cardiovascular prognosis.
2006
The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of various inflammatory markers on atherosclerotic burden and cardiovascular prognosis. In a prospective study 720 patients preceding coronary angiography were enrolled. In all patients carotid and leg arteries were examined using sonographic methods and C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, interleukin-18 (IL-18) and interleukin-6 have been determined. Patients were compared with regard to atherosclerotic burden: no clinically significant stenosis (N=57, 7.9%), coronary artery disease only (N=362, 50.3%), coronary artery disease with peripheral atherosclerosis (=multi-vascular atherosclerosis, N=301, 41.8%).Follow-up data after a median of 6.5 year…
Effects of Exercise on Patellar Cartilage in Women with Mild Knee Osteoarthritis
2015
AB Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of exercise on patellar cartilage using T2 relaxation time mapping of magnetic resonance imaging in postmenopausal women with mild patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: Eighty postmenopausal women (mean age, 58 (SD, 4.2) yr) with mild knee OA were randomized to either a supervised progressive impact exercise program three times a week for 12 months (n = 40) or a nonintervention control group (n = 40). Biochemical properties of cartilage were estimated using T2 relaxation time mapping, a parameter sensitive to collagen integrity, collagen orientation, and tissue hydration. Leg muscle strength and power, aerobic capacity, and…
Circulating specific antibodies enhance systemic cross-priming by delivery of complexed antigen to dendritic cells in vivo
2012
Increasing evidence suggests that antibodies can have stimulatory effects on T-cell immunity. However, the contribution of circulating antigen-specific antibodies on MHC class I cross-priming in vivo has not been conclusively established. Here, we defined the role of circulating antibodies in cross-presentation of antigen to CD8(+) T cells. Mice with hapten-specific circulating antibodies, but naϊve for the T-cell antigen, were infused with haptenated antigen and CD8(+) T-cell induction was measured. Mice with circulating hapten-specific antibodies showed significantly enhanced cross-presentation of the injected antigen compared with mice that lacked these antibodies. The enhanced cross-pre…
Recombinant virus-like particles of a norovirus (genogroup II strain) administered intranasally and orally with mucosal adjuvants LT and LT(R192G) in…
2003
We investigated the immune response induced by mucosal immunization of BALB/c mice with virus-like particles (VLPs) of a genogroup II norovirus, Dijon171/96 virus, produced in the baculovirus system. VLPs administered alone by the intranasal route induced a high serum antibody response as well as fecal IgA, which were enhanced when the heat-labile Escherichia coli toxin or its non toxic mutant LT(R192G) was coadministered. In these conditions, the oral route was also efficient. Cytokine production by cells from different lymphoid tissues was then assessed after in vitro restimulation. A Th1/Th2-like response was observed in cervical lymph node and Peyer's patch (PP) cell cultures from mice …
Charles Dickens's "A Christmas Carol" and Lev Tolstoy's "Where Love Is, There Is God Also": The Quest For the Meaning of Life
2021
Uznanie Lwa Tołstoja dla Charlesa Dickensa, którego pisarz rosyjski podziwiał za demokratyczne i humanistyczne cechy jego pisarstwa, było trwałe i niezmienne. Proces odnajdywania sensu życia i powrotu do społeczeństwa jest jednym z głównych tematów Opowieści wigilijnej i Gdzie miłość – tam i Bóg. Jednak źródła samotności i izolacji bohaterów Dickensa i Tołstoja mają różne podłoża. Seria wydarzeń i spotkań prowadzi obu bohaterów do wypracowania nowego …
