How partnerships end in guillemots Uria aalge : chance events, adaptive change, or forced divorce?
2007
Divorce in socially monogamous species can result from different mechanisms, for example, chance events, active desertion of the partner, or the intrusion of a third individual ousting the partner. We compared the predictions associated with such mechanisms with data from common guillemots (Uria aalge) breeding on the Isle of May, Scotland. The data cover the years 1982--2005 and show a yearly divorce rate of 10.2%. In most divorces (86%), one of the original partners moved to another breeding site, whereas the other bird stayed and bred with a new partner. On average, movers had a significantly lower breeding success after divorce, stayers were largely unaffected, whereas the incoming bird…
The mitochondrial‐derived peptide MOTS ‐c: a player in exceptional longevity?
2015
Mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDP) are encoded by functional short open reading frames in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). These include humanin, and the recently discovered mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA-c (MOTS-c). Although more research is needed, we suggest that the m.1382A>C polymorphism located in the MOTS-c encoding mtDNA, which is specific for the Northeast Asian population, may be among the putative biological mechanisms explaining the high longevity of Japanese people. 5.760 JCR (2015) Q1, 36/187 Cell biology, 3/49 Geriatrics & gerontology UEM
SMOS REFLEX 2003: L-band emissivity characterization of vineyards
2005
The goal of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission over land is to infer surface soil moisture from multiangular L-band radiometric measurements. As the canopy affects the microwave emission of land, it is necessary to characterize different vegetation layers. This paper presents the Reference Pixel L-Band Experiment (REFLEX), carried out in June-July 2003 at the Vale/spl grave/ncia Anchor Station, Spain, to study the effects of grapevines on the soil emission and on the soil moisture retrieval. A wide range of soil moisture (SM), from saturated to completely dry soil, was measured with the Universitat Polite/spl grave/cnica de Catalunya's L-band Automatic Radiometer (LAURA). Concurre…
Hydrologie, Changement Climatique, Adaptation, Ressource en Eau en Bourgogne : rapport final du projet HYCCARE Bourgogne
2016
Word order and emergence of meaning in French and Chinese
2022
French and Chinese, both geographically and linguistically classified, are two languages that are far apart and show different language tendencies. According to G. Guillaume, Chinese is a ‘character language’ and French is a ‘word language’. Xu Tongqiang considers Chinese to be a ‘language with a semantic dimension’ and the Indo-European ‘languages are languages with a syntactic-morphological dimension’. According to us, it is assumed that Chinese is a ‘semantically oriented language’ while French is a “syntactically oriented language”. Faced with this typological difference, we consider that the basic level in Chinese grammatical analysis is based on a relative dualism 'characters-words' a…
: Looking through the gaps of the digital divide in Higher education
2007
The development of children's perception of hierarchical patterns : an investigation across tasks and populations
2011
The thesis investigated the development of children’s global/local processing hierarchical patterns introduced by Navon (1977). The objectives were to understand more comprehensively the developmental characteristics of children’s perception through their global and local processing of hierarchical patterns, by considering the effects of age, stimuli properties, duration of exposure to the stimuli and gender in a perceptual task and a drawing task. These effects were tested in 3 different populations: typically developing children, children with mental retardation and early blind children. The results revealed that typically developing children attended to both the local and global level of…
