Assessing sampling coverage of species distribution in biodiversity databases

2019

Abstract Aim Biodiversity databases are valuable resources for understanding plant species distributions and dynamics, but they may insufficiently represent the actual geographic distribution and climatic niches of species. Here we propose and test a method to assess sampling coverage of species distribution in biodiversity databases in geographic and climatic space. Location Europe. Methods Using a test selection of 808,794 vegetation plots from the European Vegetation Archive (EVA), we assessed the sampling coverage of 564 European vascular plant species across both their geographic ranges and realized climatic niches. Range maps from the Chorological Database Halle (CDH) were used as bac…

Intramolecular structural parameters are key modulators of the gel-liquid transition in coarse grained simulations of DPPC and DOPC lipid bilayers

2018

The capability of coarse-grained models based on the MARTINI mapping to reproduce the gel-liquid phase transition in saturated and unsaturated model lipids was investigated. We found that the model is able to reproduce a lower critical temperature for 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC) with respect to 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). Nonetheless, the appearance of a gel phase for DOPC is strictly dependent on the intramolecular parameters chosen to model its molecular structure. In particular, we show that the bending angle at the coarse-grained bead corresponding to the unsaturated carbon-carbon bond acts as an order parameter determining the temperature of …

Collective Cell Migration in a Fibrous Environment: A Hybrid Multiscale Modelling Approach

2021

International audience; The specific structure of the extracellular matrix (ECM), and in particular the density and orientation of collagen fibres, plays an important role in the evolution of solid cancers. While many experimental studies discussed the role of ECM in individual and collective cell migration, there are still unanswered questions about the impact of nonlocal cell sensing of other cells on the overall shape of tumour aggregation and its migration type. There are also unanswered questions about the migration and spread of tumour that arises at the boundary between different tissues with different collagen fibre orientations. To address these questions, in this study we develop …

On the modelling of an Acid/Base Flow battery: an innovative electrical energy storage device based on pH and salinity gradients

2019

The Acid/Base Flow Battery (AB-FB) is an innovative and sustainable way to store electric energy. It can theoretically guarantee an energy density of about 11 kWh/m3, which is higher than that provided by pumped hydropower, osmotic energy storage and compressed air. The AB-FB stores energy as pH and salinity gradients by employing a stack provided with (i) channels, hosting the solutions at difference pH and concentrations, separated by (ii) monopolar and bipolar ion exchange membranes. Two different membrane processes are involved: the Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis (ED-BM) as charging step and its opposite, Bipolar Membrane Reverse Electrodialysis (RED-BM) as discharging step. The prese…

An Overview of the Regional Experiments for Land-Atmosphere Exchanges 2012 (Reflex 2012) Campaign

2015

The REFLEX 2012 campaign was initiated as part of a training course on the organization of an airborne campaign to support advancement of the understanding of land-atmosphere interaction processes. This article describes the campaign, its objectives and observations, remote as well as in situ. The observations took place at the experimental Las Tiesas farm in an agricultural area in the south of Spain. During the period of ten days, measurements were made to capture the main processes controlling the local and regional land-atmosphere exchanges. Apart from multi-temporal, multi-directional and multi-spatial space-borne and airborne observations, measurements of the local meteorology, energy…

Cartoon filter via adaptive abstraction

2016

We propose a non-parametric methodology to realize abstraction images. The redundant wavelet "a trous" algorithm is applied for details detection. An multi-scale circular median filter is used as a smoothing filter. The proposed algorithm is simple and fast on low-cost entry-level hardware. Abstraction in computer graphics defines a procedure that discriminates the essential information that is worth keeping. Usually details, that correspond to higher frequency components, allow to distinguish otherwise similar images. Vice versa, low frequencies are related to the main information, which are larger structures. Contours themselves may also be identified by high frequencies and separate each pi…

Modelling the Reverse ElectroDialysis process with seawater and concentrated brines

2012

Technologies for the exploitation of renewable energies have been dramatically increasing in number, complexity and type of source adopted. Among the others, the use of saline gradient power is one of the latest emerging possibilities, related to the use of the osmotic/chemical potential energy of concentrated saline solutions. Nowadays, the fate of this renewable energy source is intrinsically linked to the development of the pressure retarded osmosis and reverse electrodialysis technologies. In the latter, the different concentrations of two saline solutions is used as a driving force for the direct production of electricity within a stack very similar to the conventional electrodialysis …

Towards human cell simulation

2019

The faithful reproduction and accurate prediction of the phe-notypes and emergent behaviors of complex cellular systems are among the most challenging goals in Systems Biology. Although mathematical models that describe the interactions among all biochemical processes in a cell are theoretically feasible, their simulation is generally hard because of a variety of reasons. For instance, many quantitative data (e.g., kinetic rates) are usually not available, a problem that hinders the execution of simulation algorithms as long as some parameter estimation methods are used. Though, even with a candidate parameterization, the simulation of mechanistic models could be challenging due to the extr…

Modeling Drug Effects on Personalized 3D Models of the Heart: A Simulation Study

2010

[EN] The use of anti-arrhythmic drugs is common to treat heart rhythm disorders. Computational modeling and simulation are powerful tools that can be used to investigate the effects of specific drugs on cardiac electrophysiology. In this work a patient-specific anatomical heart model is built to study the effects of dofetilide, a drug that affects IKr current in cardiac cells. We study the multi-scale effects of the drug, from cellular to organ level, by simulating electrical propagation on tissue coupled cellular ion kinetics for several heart beats. Different cell populations configurations namely endocardial, midmyocardial and epicardial are used to test the effect of tissue heterogeneit…

The on-line coupled atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) – Part 5: Expanding the Multi-Model-Driver (MMD v2.0) for 2-way data exchange includin…

2018

Abstract. As part of the Modular Earth Submodel System (MESSy), the Multi-Model-Driver (MMD v1.0) was developed to couple online the regional Consortium for Small-scale Modeling (COSMO) model into a driving model, which can be either the regional COSMO model or the global European Centre Hamburg general circulation model (ECHAM) (see Part 2 of the model documentation). The coupled system is called MECO(n), i.e., MESSy-fied ECHAM and COSMO models nested n times. In this article, which is part of the model documentation of the MECO(n) system, the second generation of MMD is introduced. MMD comprises the message-passing infrastructure required for the parallel execution (multiple programme mul…
