Analysis of 29 Y-chromosome SNPs in a single multiplex useful to predict the geographic origin of male lineages

Abstract The European Consortium “High throughput analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms for the forensic identification of persons—SNPforID” has performed a selection of candidate Y-chromosome SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) for making inferences on the geographic origin of an unknown sample. A “Major Y chromosome haplogroup typing kit” has been developed, which allows the multiplex amplification of 29 SNPs in a single reaction followed by a single base extension (SBE) reaction (minisequencing) and separation of the resulting extension products by capillary electrophoresis.

Abstract Prior studies recognise the enabling power of incompleteness in the design of Performance Measurement Systems (PMS). We add to these studies by exploring the ‘time dimension’ of incompleteness as a way to delve into the generative power of design. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) is a multicarrier signaling technique which trades off robustness for spectral efficiency when compared to conventional OFDM with a cyclic prefix. A simple joint estimation-detection technique for OFDM systems

In this work a simple approach for the joint estimation-detection in a frequency selective severe fading environment of OFDM signals adopting PSK constellations is presented. A linear predictor of suitable order is adopted for the channel estimation in the frequency domain. The predictor coefficients are estimated on the basis of a sample estimation of the autocorrelation of the channel frequency response, aided by a preliminary differential decoding, in a blockwise manner. Rapid PCR-based test for identifying Candida albicans by using primers derived from the pH-regulated KER1 gene.

A PCR-based method in combination with a simple, reliable and inexpensive DNA extraction procedure for rapid detection of Candida albicans clinical isolates is described here. The extraction protocol is based on a combination of chemical (NaOH and detergents) and physical (boiling) treatments, thus avoiding many of the problems inherent in the currently available DNA extraction protocols (basically the use of expensive and/or toxic chemical reagents), and may be useful for daily clinical routine. The PCR-based system described here uses a single pair of primers (SC1F and SC1R) deduced from the C. albicans-specific KER1 gene sequence. These primers amplify a 670-bp fragment of the KER1 gene.…

An integrated fuzzy cells-classifier

This paper introduces a genetic algorithm able to combine different classifiers based on different distance functions. The use of a genetic algorithm is motivated by the fact that the combination phase is based on the optimization of a vote strategy. The method has been applied to the classification of four types of biological cells, results show an improvement of the recognition rate using the genetic algorithm combination strategy compared with the recognition rate of each single classifier.

Abstract Immune therapies including CAR T cells and bispecific T cell engagers are demonstrating remarkable efficacy in relapsed refractory myeloma (MM). In this context, we have recently shown that proteasome inhibitor bortezomib (BTZ) results in immunogenic cell death (ICD) and in a viral mimicry state in MM cells, allowing for immune recognition of tumor cells. Indium surfactant effect on AlN/GaN heterostructures grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy: Applications to intersubband transitions

We report on a dramatic improvement of the optical and structural properties of AlN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) grown by metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy using indium as a surfactant. This improvement is observed using photoluminescence as well as x-ray diffraction. Atomic force microscopy shows different surface morphologies between samples grown with and without In. This is ascribed to a modified relaxation mechanism induced by different surface kinetics. These improved MQWs exhibit intersubband absorption at short wavelength (2 mu m). The absorption linewidth is as low as 65 meV and the absorption coefficient is increased by 85%.
