Regulatory changes in pterin and carotenoid genes underlie balanced color polymorphisms in the wall lizard

Significance Reptiles show an amazing color diversity based on variation in melanins, carotenoids, and pterins. This study reveals genes controlling differences between three color morphs (white, orange, and yellow) in the common wall lizard. Orange pigmentation, due to high levels of orange/red pterins in skin, is caused by genetic changes in the sepiapterin reductase gene. Yellow skin, showing high levels of yellow carotenoids, is controlled by the beta-carotene oxygenase 2 locus. New Acylated Presenegenin Saponins from Two Species ofMuraltia

Six new acylated bisdesmosidic triterpene glycosides 1–6 were isolated from the roots of Muraltia heisteria (L.) DC., as three inseparable mixtures 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6 of the (E)- and (Z)-3,4,5-trimethoxycinnamoyl derivatives. The compound pair 1/2 along with four known saponins were also isolated from the roots of Muraltia satureioides DC. Ileus Following Spontaneous Jejunum Intramural Hematoma: Case Report and Review of the Literature

Anticoagulant therapy may cause the onset of a spontaneous intramural hematoma of the small bowel, in the jejunum, ileum or duodenum. A 53-year-old woman on therapy with heparin for previous pulmonary embolism was admitted for abdominal pain and vomit. Computed tomography scan visualized an intramural hematoma of the jejunum causing subtotal obstruction of the intestinal lumen. The patient underwent resection of a part of the jejunum, securing intestinal continuity by a mechanical side-to-side anastomosis. Color polymorphisms are common in lizards, which provide an excellent model system to study their evolution and adaptive function. The lacertid genus Podarcis is particularly interesting because it comprises several polymorphic species. Previous studies with lacertid lizards have tried to explain the maintenance of color polymorphisms by correlational selection between color morphs and several phenotypic traits. Preliminary Study of the Mural Paintings of Sotterra Church in Paola (Cosenza, Italy)

A multi-analytical approach was employed to study wall paintings located in the Sotterra church at Paola, in the province of Cosenza, Italy. The site is an underground church (hence the name of Sotterra, which means “under the earth”) rediscovered in the second half of the 19th century, during the building works of the Madonna del Carmine church on the same area. This underground church preserves valuable mural paintings having different styles. The construction’s dating and overlapped modifications made until the site was abandoned is also debated.
