Glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (rgc). Up- and down-regulated autoantibody immunoreactivities in glaucoma patients have been demonstrated. Previous studies showed protective effects of down-regulated antibodies [gamma (γ)-synuclein and glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP]) on neuroretinal cells. Cytogenetic study of a spindle-cell rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland.

The cytogenetic analysis of a spindle-cell rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland in a 6-year-old boy is reported. The tumor cells showed an abnormal karyotype with a hypotriploid modal chromosome number and clonal structural rearrangements affecting chromosomes 1, 8, 12, 21, and 22. The tumor karyotype was: 59, XY, -1, -3, -4, -5, -6, +8, +8, +del(8)(q22q24), -9, -10, del(12)(q13), -15, -16, -17, -18, der(21)t(12;21)(p11;p11), -22, der(22)t(1;22)(q12;p11).

Abstract The effects of a nitric oxide-donor, S -nitroso- N -acetylpenicillamine, and a direct activator of soluble guanylyl cyclase, 3-(5′-hydroxymethyl-2′-furyl)-1-benzyl indazole (YC-1), on force of contraction ( F c ) and L-type Ca 2+ currents ( I Ca(L) ) were investigated in myocardial preparations from neonatal and adult rats. Since hearts from adult and neonatal animals contained 160 and 47 mg/100 g wet weight myoglobin, respectively, its possible interaction with both drugs was also investigated. Acute painful paraplegia in a 49-year-old man with allergic asthma.

We present a case of a 49-year-old man, with a 10-year history of bronchial asthma and nasal polyposis, who developed acutely painful paraplegia and paresthesias. Laboratory data showed elevated blood creatine kinase levels and myoglobinuria, which were diagnostic for rhabdomyolysis but only partially explained the neurological deficit. Electrophysiological studies revealed a sensorimotor neuropathy of multiple mononeuritis type. The patient also had leucocytosis with marked eosinophilia and antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies. Bronchial biopsies showed inflammatory infiltrates with a prevalence of eosinophils. The purpose of this study was to examine markers of skeletal muscle tissue damage and circulating anabolic and catabolic hormones to gain insight into the recovery process from Friday until Monday, when a new practice week begins. Twenty-eight National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I football players gave consent to participate in the investigation in the ninth game of the season. The underlying mechanisms are not yet clearly elucidated, and remain the focus of current investigations. Here we revisit data obtained at our lab on binary sugar/water and ternary protein/sugar/water systems, in wide ranges of water content and temperature, in the light of the current literature. An unambiguous procedure for discovering relaxation influence on M�ssbauer spectra

A mathematical procedure which gives an opportunity to distinguish between relaxation and distribution mechanisms of the Mossbauer line broadening is proposed. It is based on the method of Mossbauer line sharpening developed recently [1] and allows one to answer unambiguously the question whether or not relaxation manifests itself in Mossbauer measurements by examining the wings of the spectrum. The procedure is applied to the spectra of high spin ferric metmyoglobin and (Fe0.65Ni0.35)1−xMnx alloys. Tracking the structural dynamics of proteins in solution using time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering

We demonstrate tracking of protein structural changes with time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering (TR-WAXS) with nanosecond time resolution. We investigated the tertiary and quaternary conformational changes of human hemoglobin under nearly physiological conditions triggered by laser-induced ligand photolysis. We also report data on optically induced tertiary relaxations of myoglobin and refolding of cytochrome c to illustrate the wide applicability of the technique. By providing insights into the structural dynamics of proteins functioning in their natural environment, TR-WAXS complements and extends results obtained with time-resolved optical spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.
Internal dynamics and protein-matrix coupling in trehalose-coated proteins.

Abstract We review recent studies on the role played by non-liquid, water-containing matrices on the dynamics and structure of embedded proteins. Two proteins were studied, in water–trehalose matrices: a water-soluble protein (carboxy derivative of horse heart myoglobin) and a membrane protein (reaction centre from Rhodobacter sphaeroides ).
