Radiation-Engineered Functional Nanoparticles in Aqueous Systems.
2015
Controlled synthesis of nanoscalar and nanostructured materials enables the development of novel functional materials with fine-tuned optical, mechanical, electronic, magnetic, conductive and catalytic properties that are of use in numerous applications. These materials have also found their potential use in medicine as vehicles for drug delivery, in diagnostics or in combinations thereof. In principle, nanoparticles can be divided into two broad categories, organic and inorganic nanoparticles. For both types of nanoparticles there are numerous possible synthetic routes. Considering the large difference in nature of these materials and the elementary reactions involved in the synthetic rout…
A broadening temperature sensitivity range with a core-shell YbEr@YbNd double ratiometric optical nanothermometer.
2016
The chemical architecture of lanthanide doped core–shell up-converting nanoparticles can be engineered to purposely design the properties of luminescent nanomaterials, which are typically inaccessible to their homogeneous counterparts. Such an approach allowed to shift the up-conversion excitation wavelength from ∼980 to the more relevant ∼808 nm or enable Tb or Eu up-conversion emission, which was previously impossible to obtain or inefficient. Here, we address the issue of limited temperature sensitivity range of optical lanthanide based nano-thermometers. By covering Yb–Er co-doped core nanoparticles with the Yb–Nd co-doped shell, we have intentionally combined temperature dependent Er u…
New Magnetic Thin Film Hybrid Materials Built by the Incorporation of Octanickel(II)-oxamato Clusters Between Clay Mineral Platelets
2011
We report on a new method based on the combination of Langmuir-Schaefer deposition with self-assembly to insert highly anisotropic Ni(8) molecules in a hybrid organic-inorganic nanostructure. Spectroscopic, crystallographic, and magnetic data prove the successful insertion of the guest cationic molecule between templating clay platelets. These results open a new route toward the highly controlled fabrication of tailored functional organic-inorganic nanomaterials.
Gene toxicity studies on titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanomaterials used for UV-protection in cosmetic formulations
2010
Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanomaterials, used as UV protecting agents in sunscreens, were investigated for their potential genotoxicity in in vitro and in vivo test systems. Since standard OECD test methods are designed for soluble materials and genotoxicity testing for nanomaterials is still under revision, a battery of standard tests was used, covering different endpoints. Additionally, a procedure to disperse the nanomaterials in the test media and careful characterization of the dispersed test item was added to the testing methods. No genotoxicity was observed in vitro (Ames' Salmonella gene mutation test and V79 micronucleus chromosome mutation test) or in vivo (mouse bone marrow…
Porous Materials Based on 3-Dimensional Td-Directing Functionalized Adamantane Scaffolds and Applied as Recyclable Catalysts
2018
Porous materials have been of high scientific and technological interest owing to their unique performances in many topical applications related to multiphasic functional systems: gas separation and storage, heterogeneous catalysis, energy conversion, etc. We review herein the synthetic strategies applied for using functionalized adamantane derivatives as polyhedral (mainly tetrahedral, Td-directing) building units of three-dimensional (3-D) porous supramolecular structures and nanomaterials, either purely organic or within metal hybrid frameworks. The resulting materials are currently used in varied heterogeneous (or supported) transition metal catalysis and organocatalysis, including rece…
Influence of cation order on the dielectric properties of (1 – x)Pb(Sc 0:5 Nb 0:5 )O 3 -xPb(Yb 0:5 Nb 0:5 )O 3 ceramics
2020
Ceramic lead niobates and their solid solutions (1 - x)Pb(Sc0:5Nb0:5)O3 - xPb(Yb0:5Nb0:5)O3 were synthesized by solid state reactions from oxides. The structure of investigated samples was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Dielectric studies of the ceramics were performed by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy at the temperature ranging from 600 K to 140 K. For all ceramic samples a diffuse phase transition as well as relaxor ferroelectric behavior were observed. © 2020 Barbara Garbarz-Glos et al., published by Sciendo 2020. Nanocatalysts for High Selectivity Enyne Cyclization: Oxidative Surface Reorganization of Gold Sub-2-nm Nanoparticle Networks
2021
International audience; Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized in networks by polymantane ligands (diamondoids) were successfully used as precatalysts for highly selective heterogeneous gold-catalyzed dimethyl allyl(propargyl)malonate cyclization to 5-membered conjugated diene. Such reaction usually suffers from selectivity issues with homogeneous catalysts. This control over selectivity further opened the way to one-pot cascade reaction, as illustrated by the 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization–Diels–Alder reaction of dimethyl allyl propargyl malonate with maleic anhydride. The ability to assemble nanoparticles with controllable sizes and shapes within networks concerns research in sensor…
Zirconia Based Nanomaterials for Oxygen Sensors – Generation, Characterisation and Optical Properties
2007
Microwave driven hydrothermal synthesis and hydrothermal synthesis were used to obtain ZrO2 nanopowders. Their production with varying phase composition, the characterisation and selected optical properties concerning their potential use as luminescence oxygen sensors are reported. It was found that the powders obtained by the microwave driven hydrothermal method and annealed at 750 0C in air show experiment repeatability within an accuracy of 6 %.
An insight into the functionalisation of carbon nanotubes by diazonium chemistry: Towards a controlled decoration
2014
The derivatisation of materials including iron, gold, and carbon by addition of diazonium salts is a reliable process to tune their interfacial interaction with the surrounding media. In this regard, the functionalisation of carbon nanostructures by diazonium chemistry is a versatile strategy to obtain soluble nanomaterials with degrees of functionalisation among the highest ever reported. Starting from these premises we have studied the functionalisation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by addition of the aryl diazonium salts generated in situ by treatment of 4-methoxyaniline with isopentylnitrite. Following a thorough purification and characterisation protocol (UV-vis, TGA, ATR-IR, cyclic…
Halloysite nanotubes as support for metal-based catalysts
2017
Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are clay minerals with a hollow nanotubular structure. There is growing interest in these nanomaterials, due to their biocompatibility, potential applications and availability. The surface chemistry of HNTs is versatile for the targeted chemical modification of the inner lumen and outer surface. Functionalized halloysite constitutes a valuable support for metal nanoparticles, promoting catalytic applications with tunable properties. The peculiar tubular shape of HNTs favors the dispersion and surface availability of the supported metal nanoparticles that are active in the catalytic path. Moreover, the presence of an empty lumen opens new perspectives for the prod…
