Combined small-angle x-ray scattering/extended x-ray absorption fine structure study of coated Co nanoclusters in bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate

2009

Chemically stable cobalt nanostructures have been prepared with Co(II) reduction in the confined space of cobalt bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate, Co(AOT)2, reverse micelles dispersed in n-heptane. The reaction was carried out by adding a solution of sodium borohydride in ethanol (1% weight) to a 0.2M micellar solution of Co(AOT)2 in n-heptane at a reductant to Co(II) molar ratio of 4. This procedure involves the rapid formation of surfactant-coated Co nanoparticles followed by their slow separation as nanostructures embedded in a sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate matrix. The resulting composites, characterized by extended x-ray absorption fine structure and small-angle x-ray scattering…

Diamond Magnetic Microscopy of Malarial Hemozoin Nanocrystals.

2019

Magnetic microscopy of malarial hemozoin nanocrystals was performed using optically detected magnetic resonance imaging of near-surface diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers. Hemozoin crystals were extracted from $Plasmodium$-$falciparum$-infected human blood cells and studied alongside synthetic hemozoin crystals. The stray magnetic fields produced by individual crystals were imaged at room temperature as a function of applied field up to 350 mT. More than 100 nanocrystals were analyzed, revealing the distribution of their magnetic properties. Most crystals ($96\%$) exhibit a linear dependence of stray field magnitude on applied field, confirming hemozoin's paramagnetic nature. A volume magneti…

Nanoscale assembly processes revealed in the nacroprismatic transition zone of Pinna nobilis mollusc shells

2015

Intricate biomineralization processes in molluscs engineer hierarchical structures with meso-, nano-, and atomic architectures that give the final composite material exceptional mechanical strength and optical iridescence on the macroscale. This multiscale biological assembly inspires new synthetic routes to complex materials. Our investigation of the prism-nacre interface reveals nanoscale details governing the onset of nacre formation using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. A wedge polishing technique provides unprecedented, large-area specimens required to span the entire interface. Within this region, we find a transition from nanofibrillar aggregation to irregu…

Gas sensing properties of multiwall carbon nanotubes decorated with rhodium nanoparticles

2011

International audience; In the present work, multiwalled carbon nanotubes were decorated with rhodium nanoparticles using a colloidal solution in the post-discharge of an RF atmospheric plasma of argon (Ar) or argon/oxygen (Ar:O 2). The properties of these hybrid materials towards the room temperature detection of NO 2 , C 2 H 4 , CO, C 6 H 6 and moisture were investigated and discussed in view of compositional and morphological studies. It was found that the presence of oxygen in the plasma treatment is essential to significantly enhance the gas response of Rh-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotubes and to avoid response saturation even at low gas/vapor concentrations. These desirable effec…

Self-Assembly of Polymer Blends and Nanoparticles through Rapid Solvent Exchange.

2019

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the fabrication of polymeric colloids containing inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) via the flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) technique. During this process, a binary polymer blend, initially in a good solvent for the polymers, is rapidly mixed with NPs and a poor solvent for the polymers that is miscible with the good solvent. The simulations reveal that the polymers formed Janus particles with NPs distributed either on the surface of the aggregates, throughout their interior, or aligned at the interface between the two polymer domains, depending on the NP-polymer and NP-solvent interactions. The loading and surface density of NPs can be contro…

Nanofibrous photocatalysts from electrospun nanocapsules

2017

We present the design of multicompartment metal oxide/silica nanofibrous photocatalysts by colloid-electrospinning and subsequent calcination. During the calcination process, silica nanomaterials are cemented to form the fibrous framework and metal oxide precursors are crystallized inside and onto the fibers. This multicompartment nanofibrous structure, constructed with nanoparticles and core-shell nanocapsules, is therefore beneficial for the separation of the materials and the light utilization due to the multiple reflections and scattering of incident light in the cavities. The photocatalytic activity of the fibers was verified by the successful degradation of a model dye rhodamine B. Th…

Ultrastable, Uniform, Reproducible, and Highly Sensitive Bimetallic Nanoparticles as Reliable Large Scale SERS Substrates

2015

International audience; A strong interest exists in developing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates that uniformly enhance Raman signals of chemical and biological molecules over large scales while reaching the detection limit of trace concentrations. Even though the resonant excitation of localized surface plasmons of single or assembled metallic nanoparticles used in SERS substrates can induce large electromagnetic fields, these substrates display a SERS activity which suffers from poor reproducibility, uniformity, and stability, preventing them from being reliable for applications. In this work, we have developed self-supported large scale Ag/Au bimetallic SERS-active su…

In Vitro–In Vivo Fluctuation Spectroscopies

2010

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) was first developed for biophysical studies in analogy with photon scattering correlation spectroscopy. Although it is mainly devoted to the study of freely diffusing particles, FCS is actually able to discern between different kinds of motions, such as diffusion, anomalous diffusion, or drift motions. The frontier application of FCS nowadays is in medical studies both within cells and on the cell membranes, and in the investigation of single molecules in solid matrices. In this field, FCS originated also image correlation spectroscopy methods. The whole field can be unified under the name of fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy (FFS). We present…

Deformation of flexible ferromagnetic filaments under a rotating magnetic field

2019

Research on magnetic particles dispersed in a fluid medium, actuated by a rotating magnetic field, is becoming increasingly active for both lab-on-chip and bio-sensing applications. In this study, we experimentally investigate the behaviour of ferromagnetic filaments in a rotating field. Filaments are synthesized by linking micron-sized ferromagnetic particles with DNA strands. The experiments were conducted under different magnetic field strengths, frequencies and filament sizes, and deformation of the filaments was registered via microscope and camera. The results obtained showed that the body deformation is larger for longer filaments and higher frequencies and lower for larger magnetic …
