Separation of Nanoparticles by Gel Electrophoresis According to Size and Shape

We demonstrate the separation of gold and silver nanoparticles according to their size and shape by agarose gel electrophoresis after coating them with a charged polymer layer. The separation is monitored optically using the size- and shape-dependent plasmon resonance of noble metal particles and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrophoretic mobilities are quantitatively explained by a model based on the Henry formula, providing a theoretical framework for predicting gel mobilities of polymer coated nanoparticles.

In tandem: High-resolution TEM shows that during the initial stages of demosponge spicule formation, a primordial crystalline structure is formed within the axial filament. The recently developed electron diffraction tomography technique (ADT) reveals that the nanorods have a layered structure that matches smectitic phyllosilicates. Supra-aggregates of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules.

In this paper, the self-organization of fiber-forming anisotropic molecules is inspected both theoretically and experimentally. In the first part, a theoretical model which extends the de Gennes theory of thin films to assemblies of strongly anisotropic molecules is reported. The model predicts that solid supported thin films made up of fiber-forming discotic molecules can grow with both tangential and radial arrangement of the fibers, respectively leading to the formation of compact and holed supra- aggregates. Sub-threshold signal processing in arrays of non-identical nanostructures

Weak input signals are routinely processed by molecular-scaled biological networks composed of non-identical units that operate correctly in a noisy environment. In order to show that artificial nanostructures can mimic this behavior, we explore theoretically noise-assisted signal processing in arrays of metallic nanoparticles functionalized with organic ligands that act as tunneling junctions connecting the nanoparticle to the external electrodes.
