La experiencia del Mal Radical en la obra de Jorge Semprún = The experience of Radical Evil in the works of Jorge Semprún

2017

2008

The article affords insight into the one hundred years' history of the Journal of Orthopedics. The existing 130 volumes reflect the change in the orthopedic spectrum of illness, diagnostic investigation and treatment. Already in its first few years of existence, the journal was a forum for international exchange. Investigation of various epochs showed that the editors applied strict scientific standards in selecting the publication, despite basis changing historical conditions. They were able to prevent political interventions appreciably influencing the character of the journal. At the same time, the negative effects which the two world wars and National Socialism had on the further develo…

Făgăraș as Jerusalem? Interethnic and interreligious ethos in Transylvania

2017

The study presents Transylvania as a space of ethnic-religious tolerance, having as a case studythe image of the town Făgăraș, as depicted in Eginald Schlattner’s novels. This space appearsas one of a heavenly nuance, based on a long tradition of coexistence of the members ofdifferent ethnic groups and religions. However, the inter-war and post-war period means theemergence of new challenges posed by the confrontation with the harmful effects of the twoideologies: Nazism and Communism. In this way, the dramas of the socio-historical contextinterweave with elements forming young Eginald. They will remain a constant in the writer’slife, offering Făgăraș the role of a forming educational array…

The German Fascists: Nazi Political Culture

2019

The rise to power of National Socialism in early 1933 made Germany become the second fascist regime and seemingly confirm fascism’s universal character. In this text, Morant examines Nazism as the German exponent of the fascist political culture by focusing both on the most characteristic elements of its world view (anti-Semitism, the myth of the Volksgemeinschaft, its nature as a political religion and its totalitarian ambitions) and the visible representations of a movement that paid special attention to future generations and did not neglect (non-Jew) women, since they constituted at least half of the “national community”. Many of these elements distinguish Nazism from its reactionary na…

The Society for the Protection of Science and Learning as a patron of refugee mathematicians

2015

The Society for the Protection of Science and Learning (SPSL, which started out as the Academic Assistance Council (AAC) 1933–36) distinguished itself from many other aid organizations set up in response to Nazi policies towards Jews and political dissidents in its focus on academic excellence as a criterion for support. Its archives are deposited in the Bodleian Library. Today, the organization is known as the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA, http://www.cara1933.org/).In the archives of the SPSL, there are files on two and a half thousand scientists, victims of persecution in their home countries, who appealed to the Society for assistance in finding refuge and work in Britain.

2017

This paper focuses on a Nazi propaganda's film, Der ewige Jude, directed by F. Hippler. The movie is a classic of anti-Semitism but the idea of eternal Jew and his opposition to the Aryan people least breaks out of a discrepancy. For Nazi ideology Jew is not being a people, not being a form. Truly, it is an anti-people, all but an not being, it is shapeless. But the cinema produces images, insofar as this is a shape; so, what Nazism recognizes to His own people, and denies it to Jew, the form as such, the movie attributes it to him.
