Futuro e presente in conflitto
2020
A critical reading of the essay by H.G Wells "The discovery of the future" with which the author of science fiction literature defines the characteristics of a new discipline that a few decades later would be called Futurology.
Simulation of the dynamics of hard ellipsoids
2008
We study a system of uniaxial hard ellipsoids by molecular dynamics simulations, changing both the aspect-ratio X-0 (X-0 = a/b, where a is the length of the revolution axis and b is the length of the two other axes) and the packing fraction phi. We calculate the translational and rotational mean squared displacements, the translational D-trans and the rotational D-rot diffusion coefficients and the associated isodiffusivity lines in the phi - X-0 plane. For the first time, we characterize the cage effect through the logarithmic time derivative of log and log . These quantities exhibit a minimum if the system is supercooled and we show that, consistently with our previous findings, for large…
Enhancing capsule in hepatocellular carcinoma: intra-individual comparison between CT and MRI with extracellular contrast agent
2021
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the value of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) to that of magnetic resonance imaging obtained with extracellular contrast agent (ECA-MRI) for the diagnosis of a tumor capsule in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using histopathologic findings as the standard of reference. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included patients with pathologically-proven resected HCCs with available preoperative contrast-enhanced CT and ECA-MRI examinations. Two blinded radiologists independently reviewed contrast-enhanced CT and ECA-MRI examinations to assess the presence of an enhancing capsule. The histopathological analysis of resected spe…
Sch 9p kinase and the Gcn4p transcription factor regulate glycerol production during winemaking
2017
Grape juice fermentation is a harsh environment with many stressful conditions, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae adapts its metabolism in response to those environmental challenges. Many nutrient-sensing pathways control this feature. The Tor/Sch9p pathway promotes growth and protein synthesis when nutrients are plenty, while the transcription factor Gcn4p is required for the activation of amino acid biosynthetic pathways. We previously showed that Sch9p impact on longevity depends on the nitrogen/carbon ratio. When nitrogen is limiting, SCH9 deletion shortens chronological life span, which is the case under winemaking conditions. Its deletion also increases glycerol during fermentation, so the…
A Comparative Study of Different Methods of Yeast Strain Characterization
1992
Summary An extensive survey of different methods of yeast strain identification (classical microbiological tests, whole-cell protein electrophoresis, chromosomal patterns, DNA hybridization and mitochondrial DNA restriction analysis) has been carried out in order to differentiate, with industrial purposes, strains present in the Alicante wine ecosystem. Only chromosomal patterns and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction analysis show differences between strains. Both techniques are very complex to be used in bio technological industries. For this reason, we have developed a new, simple, unexpensive and rapid method based on mtDNA restriction analysis.
A computer-based diagnostic tutor for average velocity
1991
Abstract The concept of average velocity is often misunderstood, even by students at university level. To analyse student reasoning about average velocity, students who were being instructed in kinematics in an introductory physics course were shown a series of computer animations of two cars moving independently. Their answers to subsequent questions tended to use partial knowledge elements present in the problem. On this basis, a list of eight procedures used by students was drawn up and used as the basis of a computer-based diagnostic tutor, Velo. The performance of Velo is being compared with human tutors.
'A Mourning Rome, A Dangerous Rome': Theatricality and Anti-Theatricality in Two Julius Caesar Films
2020
Mutations in the β-tropomyosin (TPM2) gene – a rare cause of nemaline myopathy
2002
Nemaline myopathy is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous muscle disorder. In the nebulin gene we have detected a number of autosomal recessive mutations. Both autosomal dominant and recessive mutations have been detected in the genes for alpha -actin and alpha -tropomyosin 3. A recessive mutation causing nemaline myopathy among the Old Order Amish has recently been identified in the gene for slow skeletal muscle troponin T. As linkage studies had shown that at least one further gene exists for nemaline myopathy, we investigated another tropomyosin gene expressed in skeletal muscle, the beta -tropomyosin 2 gene. Screening 66 unrelated patients, using single strand conformation polymor…
