Organisation and maturation of the human thalamus as revealed by CD15

The distribution of the CD15 antigen (CD15, 3-fucosyl-N-acetyl-lactosamine, Lewis x) has been studied immunohistochemically in the fetal human thalamus. Its changing patterns could be related to three successive, but overlapping, periods primarily due to its association with radial glial cells, neuropil, and neural cell bodies, respectively. From 9 weeks of gestation (wg), a subset of CD15-positive radial glial cells distinguished the neuroepithelium of the ventral thalamus, a characteristic also seen in the developing mouse. PSA-NCAM expression in the rat medial prefrontal cortex

The rat medial prefrontal cortex, an area considered homologous to the human prefrontal cortex, is a region in which neuronal structural plasticity has been described during adulthood. Some plastic processes such as neurite outgrowth and synaptogenesis are known to be regulated by the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). Parvalbumin-containing interneurons do not innervate granule cells in the olfactory bulb

Combining pre-embedding parvalbumin immunostaining and post-embedding immunogold detection of GABA in the olfactory bulb, we investigated whether the parvalbumin-containing GABAergic interneurons of the external plexiform layer exclusively innervate principal cells, or whether they also establish inhibitory synapses upon GABAergic local neurons such as granule cells. Expression of semaphorin 3A and neuropilin 1 with clinicopathological features and survival in human tongue cancer

Objective: To investigate the association between semaphorin 3A (SEMA 3A) and its receptor neuropilin 1 (NRP1) and the clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with tongue cancer. Study Design: Forty-three tongue squamous cell carcinoma specimens were included. Immunohistochemical staining of SEMA3A and NRP1 was performed on 15 normal tongue epithelium specimens and the 43 tumour specimens. Ultrastructural observations on the central innervation of the guinea-pig pineal gland.

In the present study the central innervation of the guinea-pig pineal gland was investigated. The habenulae and the pineal stalk contain myelinated and non-myelinated nerve fibres with few dense-cored and electron-lucent vesicles. Some myelinated fibres leave the main nerve fibre bundles, lose their myelin-sheaths and terminate in the pineal gland. Although direct proof is lacking, the non-myelinated fibres appear to end near the site where the bulk of the myelinated fibres are located. Recent hypotheses suggest that changes in neuronal structure and connectivity may underlie the etiology of depression. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is affected by depression and shows neuronal remodeling during adulthood. This plasticity may be mediated by the polysialylated form of the neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM), which is intensely expressed in the adult mPFC.
