The Egg Parasitoid Trissolcus basalis uses n-nonadecane, a Cuticular Hydrocarbon from its Stink Bug Host Nezara viridula, to Discriminate Between Fem…

2007

Contact kairomones from adult southern green stink bugs, Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) that elicit foraging behavior of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) were investigated in laboratory experiments. Chemical residues from tarsi and scutella of N. viridula induced foraging by gravid female T. basalis. Residues from body parts of female N. viridula elicited stronger responses than those from the corresponding body parts of males. Deproteinized tarsi still elicited searching responses from wasps, indicating that the kairomone was not proteinaceous. Hexane extracts of host cuticular lipids induced searching responses from T. basalis, with a strong preference f…

September 13th 1956, Stravinsky conducted at the basilica of St. Mark in Venice the first performance of the "…

Expanding spectrum of illness due to community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a case report

2009

Introduction Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rarely identified form of chronic pyelonephritis usually caused by gram-negative organisms. Herein, we report the first case caused by infection due to community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain. Case presentation An HIV-infected female with a history of intravenous drug use presented with a three month history of abdominal pain, distension, and fever. Computerized tomography of the abdomen revealed a large multicystic right kidney mass. During surgical exploration an intrarenal abscess was identified. Cultures revealed the presence of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Histopath…

Raphidascaris (Raphidascaris) macrouri n. sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from two deep-sea macrourid fishes in the Western Mediterranean: Morphological a…

2015

Abstract A new nematode species, Raphidascaris ( Raphidascaris ) macrouri n. sp. (Anisakidae), is described from male and female specimens found in the intestine, and occasionally in stomach and pyloric caeca, of two deep-water macrourid fishes (Gadiformes) off Barcelona, Mediterranean Sea: Nezumia aequalis (Gunther) (type-host) and Trachyrincus scabrus (Rafinesque). Based on light and scanning electron microscopy examination, the new species shows similar morphological features as the other four valid species of the subgenus Raphidascaris Railliet & Henry, 1915, but it differs from Raphidascaris ( Raphidascaris ) acus (Bloch, 1779), Raphidascaris (Raphidascaris ) lutjani Olsen, 1952 and Ra…

New linezolid-like 1,2,4-oxadiazoles active against Gram-positive multiresistant pathogens

2013

The synthesis and the in vitro antibacterial activity of novel linezolid-like oxadiazoles are reported. Replacement of the linezolid morpholine C-ring with 1,2,4-oxadiazole results in an antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus both methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant comparable or even superior to that of linezolid. While acetamidomethyl or thioacetoamidomethyl moieties in the C(5) side-chain are required, fluorination of the phenyl B ring exhibits a slight effect on an antibacterial activity but its presence seems to reduce the compounds cytotoxicity. Molecular modeling performed using two different approaches - FLAP and Amber software - shows that in the binding…

In vitro activity of linezolid, clarithromycin and moxifloxacin against clinical isolates of Mycobacterium kansasii

2005

To compare the activity of linezolid with a range of drugs used in the treatment of Mycobacterium kansasii infections. The percentages of resistant isolates against isoniazid, rifampicin and ethambutol were 2.9%, 1.9% and 2.9%, respectively. All isolates were susceptible to clarithromycin and moxifloxacin both with MIC(90) values of 0.125 mg/L. Linezolid was active against all isolates with MIC(50) and MIC(90) values of 0.5 and 1 mg/L, respectively, both below the susceptibility breakpoint established for mycobacteria.Linezolid, clarithromycin or moxifloxacin, could be used as alternative drugs for treatment of infections due to rifampicin-resistant isolates as well as short-course or interm…
