From a "child of light" to a "woman of genius": Sarah Grand's the beth book as the new woman bildungsroman

2021

The New Woman fiction, popular in the last decade of the 19th century, contested the traditional notions of gender roles and participated in the public debates on women’s rights. The protagonists of the New Woman novels refused to conform to the submissive and self-abnegating Victorian ideal of femininity. The article discusses the ways in which Sarah Grand, a prominent New Woman novelist and social activist, uses and transforms both the elements of her own life and the Bildungsroman conventions in her 1897 novel The Beth Book to create a heroine whose growth and development result in her personal independence and her active public engagement in women’s issues. Cast in a variety of social r…

Migration, Identity, and Threatened Mental Health: Examples from Contemporary Fiction.

2018

In 2015, the world saw 244 million international migrants. Migration has been shown to be both a protective and a risk factor for mental health, depending on circumstances. Furthermore, culture has an impact on perceptions and constructions of mental illness and identity, both of which can be challenged through migration. Using a qualitative research approach, we analysed five internationally acclaimed and influential novels and one theatre play that focus on aspects of identity, migration, and threatened mental health. As a mirror of society, fiction can help to understand perceptions of identity and mental suffering on an intrapsychic and societal level, while at the same time society its…

Dalle Cronache del mal d’amore al ciclo dell’Amica geniale: continuità ed evoluzione nella narrativa di Elena Ferrante

2019

The paper analyzes the whole narrative production of Elena Ferrante, emphasizing its unity and cohesion. Cohesion coexists with discontinuity: the publication of My Brilliant Friend marks an inventive turning point and reveals new strategies. But it’s even remarkable Ferrante’s predilection for a narrative in which «the flow of storytelling that despite its density manages to sweep you away».

PICAREQUE NOVEL AND ITS ELEMENTS IN LATVIAN NOVEL HISTORY

2013

Anotācija Blēžu jeb pikareskais romāns sākotnēji radies Spānijā 16. gadsimtā un to pārstāvēja daži literāri darbi. Taču laika gaitā, izplatoties tālāk Vācijā, Anglijā, Francijā u.c., tas kļuva par literāru modeli, kura iezīmes raksturīgas arī latviešu literatūrai- jau sākot no brāļu Kaudzīšu romāna „Mērnieku laiki”(1879) līdz pat mūsdienām. Latviešu romānistika blēžu romāna aspektā līdz šim padziļināti nav pētīta. Visplašāk pikareskais romāns attīstījās tieši 20.gs 20.-30.gadu literatūrā, kā spilgtākos piemērus var minēt K. Zariņa romānu „Spīganas purvā”, J. V. Gregri „Latvijas karalis jeb Cilvēks, kam visi parādā”, P. Rozīša „Ceplis”, Anšl. Eglīša „Līgavu mednieki”. Atslēgas vārdi: sociāli…

Narrating Selves amid Library Shelves : Literary Mediation and Demediation in S. by J. J. Abrams and Doug Dorst

2019

This essay focuses on the various forms of narrating, mediating, and interpreting selves within and around a book object, the novel S. (2013) by J. J. Abrams and Doug Dorst. The novel S. is an experiment in producing a deceivingly realistic replica of a maltreated library book object, but its discursive practices also rely on familiar literary forms, harking back to epistolary commonplaces, as well as to marginalia, both ancient and modern. The book object S., which carries the text of the novel-within-a-novel, the readers' multilayered markings, and paraphernalia, forms an archive dramatizing the workings of memory, thought, and emotion. That archive also demonstrates how the characters co…
