Computation of inverse functions in a model of cerebellar and reflex pathways allows to control a mobile mechanical segment.

Abstract The command and control of limb movements by the cerebellar and reflex pathways are modeled by means of a circuit whose structure is deduced from functional constraints. One constraint is that fast limb movements must be accurate although they cannot be continuously controlled in closed loop by use of sensory signals. Thus, the pathways which process the motor orders must contain approximate inverse functions of the bio-mechanical functions of the limb and of the muscles. This can be achieved by means of parallel feedback loops, whose pattern turns out to be comparable to the anatomy of the cerebellar pathways. Cooling of the cerebellar interpositus nucleus abolishes somatosensory cortical learning-related activity in eyeblink conditioned rabbits.

Nictitating membrane movement and multiple-unit activity in the somatosensory cortex were recorded from rabbits during paired (N = 6) and unpaired (N = 5) presentations of a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and an airpuff unconditioned stimulus (US). A behavioural conditioned response (CR) to the CS and an accompanying neural response in the somatosensory cortex developed only in the paired group. Inactivation of the cerebellar interpositus nucleus abolished both the acquired CR and the accompanying neural response. Electrophysiological Investigations of Retinogeniculate and Corticogeniculate Synapse Function

The lateral geniculate nucleus is the first relay station for the visual information. Relay neurons of this thalamic nucleus integrate input from retinal ganglion cells and project it to the visual cortex. In addition, relay neurons receive top-down excitation from the cortex. The two main excitatory inputs to the relay neurons differ in several aspects. Each relay neuron receives input from only a few retinogeniculate synapses, which are large terminals with many release sites. This is reflected by the comparably strong excitation, the relay neurons receive, from retinal ganglion cells. Trigeminal Projections to the Dorsal Thalamus in a Lacertid Lizard, <i>Podarcis hispanica</i>

Trigeminothalamic projections in the lizard <i>Podarcis hispanica </i>were investigated by means of biotinylated dextranamine (BDA) injections into different nuclei of the dorsal thalamus. Previous studies of lizards found a projection from the sensory trigeminal nuclei in the brainstem to the nuclei ventromedialis and ventrolateralis of the ventral thalamus. Abstract The first molecular studies on the phylogeny of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) bumped into a striking lack of phylogenetic structure for taxa levels higher than tribe, probably as a consequence of the rapid adaptive radiation that this group of insects went through during the Late Cretaceous. Phylogeny of long-tailed tits and allies inferred from mitochondrial and nuclear markers (Aves: Passeriformes, Aegithalidae)

Abstract In this paper we provide a molecular phylogeny based on three mitochondrial and three nuclear markers for all long-tailed tit species of the genus Aegithalos including several doubtful subspecies (17 taxa) plus three close allies of SE Asian Leptopoecile and North American Psaltriparus . Genus Aegithalos is divided into three major clades, two of them showing only minor differentiation. p53 is involved in regulation of the DNA repair gene O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) by DNA damaging agents

The DNA repair protein O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) is inducible by genotoxic stress. MGMT induction results from transcriptional activation of the MGMT gene which is a specific response to DNA damage. A possible factor involved in triggering MGMT induction might be p53, because both p53 and MGMT are activated by DNA breaks. To study the effect of p53 on induction of the MGMT gene, we compared the presence of functional wild-type (wt) and mutant p53 with MGMT expression level in various mouse fibroblasts and rat hepatoma cell lines upon genotoxic treatment. The sea urchin early histone repeating unit contains one copy of each of the five histone genes whose coordinate expression during development is regulated by gene-specific elements. To learn how within the histone repeating unit a gene-specific activator can be prevented to communicate with the heterologous promoters, we searched for domain boundaries by using the enhancer blocking assay.
