On functions with derivatives in a Lorentz space

1999

We establish a sharp integrability condition on the partial derivatives of a Sobolev mapping to guarantee that sets of measure zero get mapped to sets of measure zero. This condition is sharp also for continuity and differentiability almost everywhere.

Order optimal preconditioners for fully implicit Runge-Kutta schemes applied to the bidomain equations

2010

The partial differential equation part of the bidomain equations is discretized in time with fully implicit Runge–Kutta methods, and the resulting block systems are preconditioned with a block diagonal preconditioner. By studying the time-stepping operator in the proper Sobolev spaces, we show that the preconditioned systems have bounded condition numbers given that the Runge–Kutta scheme is A-stable and irreducible with an invertible coefficient matrix. A new proof of order optimality of the preconditioners for the one-leg discretization in time of the bidomain equations is also presented. The theoretical results are verified by numerical experiments. Additionally, the concept of weakly po…

An elliptic equation on n-dimensional manifolds

2020

We consider an elliptic equation driven by a p-Laplacian-like operator, on an n-dimensional Riemannian manifold. The growth condition on the right-hand side of the equation depends on the geometry of the manifold. We produce a nontrivial solution by using a Palais–Smale compactness condition and a mountain pass geometry.

Identification and expression of the 11β‐steroid hydroxylase from Cochliobolus lunatus in Corynebacterium glutamicum

2019

Hydroxylation of steroids has acquired special relevance for the pharmaceutical industries. Particularly, the 11β-hydroxylation of steroids is a reaction of biotechnological importance currently carried out at industrial scale by the fungus Cochliobolus lunatus. In this work, we have identified the genes encoding the cytochrome CYP103168 and the reductase CPR64795 of C. lunatus responsible for the 11β-hydroxylase activity in this fungus, which is the key step for the preparative synthesis of cortisol in industry. A recombinant Corynebacterium glutamicum strain harbouring a plasmid expressing both genes forming a synthetic bacterial operon was able to 11β-hydroxylate several steroids as subs…

An algorithmic construction of entropies in higher-order nonlinear PDEs

2006

A new approach to the construction of entropies and entropy productions for a large class of nonlinear evolutionary PDEs of even order in one space dimension is presented. The task of proving entropy dissipation is reformulated as a decision problem for polynomial systems. The method is successfully applied to the porous medium equation, the thin film equation and the quantum drift–diffusion model. In all cases, an infinite number of entropy functionals together with the associated entropy productions is derived. Our technique can be extended to higher-order entropies, containing derivatives of the solution, and to several space dimensions. Furthermore, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities can …

THE SPACE OF STRING CONFIGURATIONS IN STRING FIELD THEORY

1990

In this paper we consider the set of maps from the interval [0, π] which constitute the argument of the functionals of a String Field Theory. We show that in order to correctly reproduce results of the dual model one has to include all square integrable functions in the functional integral, or Ω0 in terms of Sobolev spaces.

Transition-edge microcalorimeters for X-ray space applications

2000

Abstract In an European Space Agency funded research project, our goal is to develop microbolometer technology for X-ray and far-infrared detection for ESA's future scientific missions. We report results on the X-ray calorimeter, which is based on the superconducting transition of the Ti/Au thermometer strip at about 200 mK. Incident X-rays heat up a Bi absorber, deposited on top of the 400 μm ×400 μm thermometer. The temperature rise of the absorber is measured as a change of the thermometer current with a SQUID operating at 1 K.

Gauss-Type Quadrature Formulae for Parabolic Splines with Equidistant Knots

2010

We construct Gauss, Lobatto, and Radau quadrature formulae associated with the spaces of parabolic splines with equidistant knots. These quadrature formulae are known to be asymptotically optimal in Sobolev spaces W p 3. Sharp estimates for the error constant in W ∞ 3 are given.

Analytic solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

2001

We consider the time dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on an half plane. For analytic initial data, existence and uniqueness of the solution are proved using the Abstract Cauchy-Kovalevskaya Theorem in Banach spaces. The time interval of existence is proved to be independent of the viscosity.

Pointwise characterizations of Hardy-Sobolev functions

2006

We establish simple pointwise characterizations of functions in the Hardy-Sobolev spaces within the range n/(n+1)<p <=1. In addition, classical Hardy inequalities are extended to the case p <= 1.
