Depth-Adapted CNN for RGB-D cameras

2020

Conventional 2D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) extract features from an input image by applying linear filters. These filters compute the spatial coherence by weighting the photometric information on a fixed neighborhood without taking into account the geometric information. We tackle the problem of improving the classical RGB CNN methods by using the depth information provided by the RGB-D cameras. State-of-the-art approaches use depth as an additional channel or image (HHA) or pass from 2D CNN to 3D CNN. This paper proposes a novel and generic procedure to articulate both photometric and geometric information in CNN architecture. The depth data is represented as a 2D offset to adapt …

The rightmost equal-cost position problem.

2013

LZ77-based compression schemes compress the input text by replacing factors in the text with an encoded reference to a previous occurrence formed by the couple (length, offset). For a given factor, the smallest is the offset, the smallest is the resulting compression ratio. This is optimally achieved by using the rightmost occurrence of a factor in the previous text. Given a cost function, for instance the minimum number of bits used to represent an integer, we define the Rightmost Equal-Cost Position (REP) problem as the problem of finding one of the occurrences of a factor whose cost is equal to the cost of the rightmost one. We present the Multi-Layer Suffix Tree data structure that, for…

A new method to improve the prediction of the celestial pole offsets

2018

Knowledge of the Earth’s changing rotation is fundamental to positioning objects in space and on the planet. Nowadays, the Earth’s orientation in space is expressed by five Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP). Many applications in astronomy, geosciences, and space missions require accurate EOP predictions. Operational predictions are released daily by the Rapid Service/Prediction Centre of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS). The prediction procedures and performances differ for the three EOP classes: polar motion, rotation angle (UT1-UTC), and the two celestial pole offsets (CPO), dX and dY. The IERS Annual Report 2016 shows Rapid Service CPO predictions er…

Selective MicroRNA-Offset RNA Expression in Human Embryonic Stem Cells

2015

Small RNA molecules, including microRNAs (miRNAs), play critical roles in regulating pluri-potency, proliferation and differentiation of embryonic stem cells. miRNA-offset RNAs (moRNAs) are similar in length to miRNAs, align to miRNA precursor (pre-miRNA) loci and are therefore believed to derive from processing of the pre-miRNA hairpin sequence. Recent next generation sequencing (NGS) studies have reported the presence of moRNAs in human neurons and cancer cells and in several tissues in mouse, including pluripotent stem cells. In order to gain additional knowledge about human moRNAs and their putative development-related expression, we applied NGS of small RNAs in human embryonic stem cel…

Interlayer and intralayer excitons in MoS2/WS2 and MoSe2/WSe2 heterobilayers

2018

Accurately described excitonic properties of transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers (HBLs) are crucial to comprehend the optical response and the charge carrier dynamics of them. Excitons in multilayer systems possess an inter- or intralayer character whose spectral positions depend on their binding energy and the band alignment of the constituent single layers. In this paper, we report the electronic structure and the absorption spectra of ${\mathrm{MoS}}_{2}/{\mathrm{WS}}_{2}$ and ${\mathrm{MoSe}}_{2}/{\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$ HBLs from first-principles calculations. We explore the spectral positions, binding energies, and the origins of inter- and intralayer excitons and compare our re…

Characterization of different regimes in nonlinear liquid crystal models

2012

[EN] The range of validity of two models for nonlocal nonlinear optics in Nematic Liquid Crystals (NLC) is studied. Particularly the influence of the optical power and the initial position of the beam over its trajectory is studied when launching the beam with an offset in a planar cell. The main difference between both models is the dependence of the orientational angle with the optical field, either linear or nonlinear. The results demonstrate the critical role of the nonlinearity in the propagation of nematicons in NLC planar cells. © 2012 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Electronic structure of delta-doped $La:SrTiO_{3}$ layers by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

2012

We have employed hard x-ray photoemission (HAXPES) to study a delta-doped SrTiO3 layer that consisted of a 3-nm thickness of La-doped SrTiO3 with 6% La embedded in a SrTiO3 film. Results are compared to a thick, uniformily doped La:SrTiO3 layer. We find no indication of a band offset for the delta-doped layer, but evidence of the presence of Ti3+ in both the thick sample and the delta-layer, and indications of a density of states increase near the Fermi energy in the delta-doped layer. These results further demonstrate that HAXPES is a powerful tool for the non-destructive investigation of deeply buried doped layers.

Reinforcement Learning Based Mobility Load Balancing with the Cell Individual Offset

2021

In this study, we focus on the cell individual offset (CIO) parameter in the handover process, which represents the willingness of a cell to admit the incoming handovers. However, it is challenging to tune the CIO parameter, as any poor implementation can lead to undesired outcomes, such as making the neighboring cells over-loaded while decreasing the traffic load of the cell. In this work, a reinforcement learning-based approach for parameter selection is introduced, since it is quite convenient for dynamically changing environments. In that regard, two different techniques, namely Q-learning and SARSA, are proposed, as they are known for their multi-objective optimization capabilities. Mo…

Far-off-resonance averaging of dipolar interactions in solids

1997

Abstract The far-off-resonance performance of several line-narrowing sequences is investigated. Both theoretically and experimentally, it is found that transverse relaxation times, dominated by dipole–dipole interactions, are most effectively prolonged not only on-resonance but also for certain, generally large, resonance offsets. These correspond to a situation when, during the basic pulse separation, the frequency offset rotates the toggling-frame Hamiltonian by multiples of 180°. The implications of these results for the study of macroscopic translational diffusion using static-field-gradient NMR are discussed.

Data Blinding for the nEDM Experiment at PSI

2020

Psychological bias towards, or away from, prior measurements or theory predictions is an intrinsic threat to any data analysis. While various methods can be used to try to avoid such a bias, e.g. actively avoiding looking at the result, only data blinding is a traceable and trustworthy method that can circumvent the bias and convince a public audience that there is not even an accidental psychological bias. Data blinding is nowadays a standard practice in particle physics, but it is particularly difficult for experiments searching for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM), as several cross measurements, in particular of the magnetic field, create a self-consistent network into which it …
