Transposon-insertion Sequencing as a Tool to Elucidate Bacterial Colonization Factors in a Burkholderia gladioli Symbiont of &lt…

2021

Inferring the function of genes by manipulating their activity is an essential tool for understanding the genetic underpinnings of most biological processes. Advances in molecular microbiology have seen the emergence of diverse mutagenesis techniques for the manipulation of genes. Among them, transposon-insertion sequencing (Tn-seq) is a valuable tool to simultaneously assess the functionality of many candidate genes in an untargeted way. The technique has been key to identify molecular mechanisms for the colonization of eukaryotic hosts in several pathogenic microbes and a few beneficial symbionts. Here, Tn-seq is established as a method to identify colonization factors in a mutualistic Bu…

Association between Intake of Energy and Macronutrients and Memory Impairment Severity in US Older Adults, National Health and Nutrition Examination …

2020

Without a cure, dementia affects about 50 million people worldwide. Understanding the effects of dietary habits, a key lifestyle behavior, on memory impairment is critical to inform early behavioral modification to delay further memory loss and progression to dementia. We examined the associations of total energy intake and energy intake from macronutrients with memory impairment among older US adults using data from the nationally representative National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey study 2011&ndash

Casimir Polder forces between two accelerating atoms and the Unruh effect

2010

The Casimir-Polder force between two atoms with equal uniform acceleration and separated by a constant distance R is considered. We show that, in the low-acceleration limit, while the near-zone R-6 behavior of the interatomic interaction energy is not changed by the acceleration of the atoms, the far-zone interaction energy decreases as R-5 instead of the well-known R-7 behavior for inertial atoms. Possibility of an indirect detection of the Unruh effect through measurements of the Casimir-Polder force between the two accelerating atoms is also suggested. We also consider a heuristic model for calculating the Casimir-Polder potential energy between the two atoms in the high-acceleration lim…

Increasing the attractiveness of a cruise port for cargo business: The contribution of stakeholders

2021

Abstract Cruise and cargo operations, though distinct seaport activities, have sufficiently similar functions that by accommodating cargo business in a largely cruise domain, a port may achieve increased attractiveness and better resource utilization. We sought to conceptualize a framework by which an existing cruise port can integrate divergent stakeholder interests to achieve port attractiveness under this duality. We adopted a qualitative approach involving in-depth interviews with experts representing the port authority and key stakeholders at Port Canaveral, the second busiest multi-day cruise embarkation port in the world. We identified a supply chain integration model as a pathway to…

Accelerometer-determined physical activity and self-reported health in a population of older adults (65-85 years): A cross-sectional study

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: BMC Public Health. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1186/1471-2458-14-284 Open Access Background: The link between physical activity (PA) and prevention of disease, maintenance of independence, and improved quality of life in older adults is supported by strong evidence. However, there is a lack of data on population levels in this regard, where PA level has been measured objectively. The main aims were therefore to assess the level of accelerometer-determined PA and to examine its associations with self-reported health in a population of Norwegian older adults (65-85 years). Methods. This was a part of a national mul…

Boards in microfinance institutions: how do stakeholders matter?

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: Journal of Management and Governance. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10997-011-9191-4 Microfinance Institutions provide financial services to poor people. Governance of these organizations is important so that they can operate efficiently and sustainably. This study analyzes the influence of stakeholders (donors, employees, customers, and creditors), on board structure (board size and CEO duality), and on organizational performance. We use a global data set of 379 microfinance institutions from 73 countries, collected from rating organizations. Supported by stakeholder theory, agency theory and resource depend…

Vaccination in old age: Challenges and promises

2021

Abstract Vaccination is one of the most effective medical interventions ever introduced, preventing millions of cases of infections worldwide every year. However, vaccines are commonly believed to be less effective in providing protection in older adults, due to the perceived decline seen in immunity in this population (“immunosenescence”). Accordingly, this chapter considers how to identify hallmarks of immunosenescence and approach their resolution strategically. It was reviewed potential options for therapeutic intervention to restore appropriate responses to vaccines in older adults.
