Michael Field’s "Long ago" (1889) as a paradigm of intertextual theory: from strangeness to metaxology

2018

Visual Representa of a Woman in the Semiotic Landscape of the Baltic States

2014

Linguistic landscape (LL) research of nine cities of the Baltic States shows that feminine discourse is of an essential significance in the public space. This is linguistically proved by feminine person’s names in ergonyms, also by female ergonyms and graffiti themes. However, there are multi-modal advertisements reflecting women and female items in the public space, and they are to be viewed from the perspective of the semiotic landscape. There are 294 photos reflecting a woman excerpted from the LL data base to describe visual images of a woman, focusing on the archetypes and concepts on woman’s role in society. There is a semiotic landscape research method, perception of a visual identit…

: Metonymy, Identification and Subjecthood in Stanley Kubrick's Lolita (1962)

2009

The author argues that, in order to bypass the Hays code, the eroticism in Kubrick's film is produced by metonymy, both verbal and non-verbal. Basing his study on the works of Christian Metz and Laura Mulvey, and more broadly on Lacanian psychoanalysis, the author analyzes how the film first constructs the character of Lolita as a “sexual object” subjected to the male gaze, then deconstructs its own construction by enabling Lolita to accede to the symbolic order, thus breaking out of the solipsistic imaginary the pedophile had confined her to. The film puts the spectator in the pervert's shoes by encouraging primary identification with the camera eye, secondary identification with Humbert H…

Texte und Textschicksale in reformatorisch bewegter Zeit. Zum linguistischen Interesse an Texten des Greiffenberger Pastors Wolfgang Silbers des Jüng…

2016

After many years of search, the only surviving copy of a collection of sermons with a chronicle (965– 1618), which was printed and published in Leipzig in 1619 by Wolfgang Silber, the parson from Greiffenberg, Lower Silesia, was discovered in 2016, within the international programme “The Silesian Cultural Heritage.” The first part of the article includes information on the life and creation of the sermon’s author and presents the historical and cultural background of the book, with references to the municipality and the church. The history of Silber’s other texts is also related. The second part of the article focuses mainly on the historical and linguistic aspects of the Greiffenberg parso…

The genus Tuponia Reuter, 1875 in Romania, with two new synonymies (Heteroptera: Miridae)

2021

Based on recently collected material and on type specimens deposited in the collections of Muzeul de Istorie Naturală “Grigore Antipa”, Bucharest, Romania, and of the Zoologische Museum, Universität Hamburg, Germany, the following new synonymies are proposed: Tuponia (Chlorotuponia) prasina (Fieber, 1864) = Tuponia (Chlorotuponia) linnavuorii Wagner, 1961, syn. n.; Tuponia (Tuponia) montandoni Reuter, 1899 = Tuponia (Tuponia) macedonica Wagner, 1957, syn. n. Lectotype and paralectotype are designated for Tuponia (Tuponia) montandoni Reuter, 1899. Tuponia (Chlorotuponia) hippophaes (Fieber, 1861), Tuponia (Tuponia) arcufera Reuter, 1879 and Tuponia (Tuponia) elegans (Jakovlev, 1867) are reco…

One size doesn’t fit all: a thematic analysis of interviews with people who have stopped participating in Narcotics Anonymous in Norway

2020

Abstract Background For persons with substance use disorders (SUDs), 12-step groups (TSGs) are the most available and used peer-based recovery resource, worldwide. However, disengagement is common, and attrition may partly be due to practices and procedures within these groups that are unacceptable to a portion of the population with SUDs. Our overall aim was to identify problematic issues related to Narcotics Anonymous (NA) participation in Norway, to inform addiction professionals’ strategies when referring persons to addiction-related self-help groups (SHGs). Methods In this qualitative study, we interviewed ten individuals who had previously participated regularly in NA for at least 6 m…

Next-generation-sequencing-based identification of familial hypercholesterolemia-related mutations in subjects with increased LDL–C levels in a latvi…

2015

Background Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is one of the commonest monogenic disorders, predominantly inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. When untreated, it results in early coronary heart disease. The vast majority of FH remains undiagnosed in Latvia. The identification and early treatment of affected individuals remain a challenge worldwide. Most cases of FH are caused by mutations in one of four genes, APOB, LDLR, PCSK9, or LDLRAP1. The spectrum of disease-causing variants is very diverse and the variation detection panels usually used in its diagnosis cover only a minority of the disease-causing gene variants. However, DNA-based tests may provide an FH diagnosis for FH patients…

Sexual size dimorphism predicts rates of sequence evolution of SPerm Adhesion Molecule 1 (SPAM1, also PH-20) in monkeys, but not in hominoids (apes i…

2010

Based on a dataset comprising coding DNA sequences of 23 anthropoid primates, we herein investigate if rates of sequence evolution of SPerm Adhesion Molecule 1 (SPAM1, also PH-20), which participates in sperm–egg interaction, is lower in more sexually dimorphic species. For comparison, we analyze sequence evolution of apolipoprotein A-IV (APOA4) and apolipoprotein A-V (APOA5), which should evolve under less or even no sexual selection given their expression in blood, digestive tract, liver, and lungs. Regression analyses provides significant support for a negative dependence of SPAM1 derived branch-specific ratios of non-synonymous to synonymous substitution rates (dN/dS) on sexual size dim…

Photoreactive flow changes in the posterior cerebral artery in control subjects and patients with occipital lobe infarction.

1995

Background and Purpose Photoreactive flow changes of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in control subjects and patients with unilateral occipital lobe infarction were investigated to study the hypothesis that occipital lobe infarction of varying extent leads to a reduced visually activated flow increase in the ipsilateral PCA. Methods Maximum mean flow velocity (MFV) of the PCA was investigated by transcranial Doppler sonography after photic stimulation of the retina. Results In 25 control subjects MFV was increased by 30.6±9.7%. In 13 patients with unilateral occipital lobe infarction the ipsilateral MFV increase was significantly lower than in control subjects. Nine patients with homon…
