Adapting to a Global Health Challenge: Managing Antimicrobial Resistance in the Nordics

2020

This article explores the adaptation of Norway and Sweden to one of the major challenges to global public health, antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Guided by assumptions derived from institutional theory, the article investigates whether, and, if so, how the AMR problem has affected the two Nordic countries’ administrative systems and frameworks for Nordic cooperation. The article builds on selected literature, expert interviews, and public documents. The findings suggest that the international impact on Norway and Sweden’s managerial adaptation to AMR is limited. Instead, adaptation takes place through incremental change within existing structures for disease prevention and control and follo…

Sezione monografica. La cooperazione internazionale allo sviluppo. Costruire sull’esperienza

2018

Canonical correlation in multivariate time series analysis

1997

We analyze a class o f state space identification algorithms for time series, based on canonical correlation analysis in the ligth of recent results on stochastic systems theory calle d « subspace methods » .These can be describe as covariance estimation followed b y stochastic realization .The methods offer the major advantage o f converting the nonlinear parameter estimation phase in traditional V A R M A models identification in to the solution o f Riccati equation but introduce at the same time some no n trivial mathematical problem s related to positivity. The states o f the forward -backward innovations representation have an interpretation : Instrumental Variables estimators .

Language-aware operational culture : Developing in-service training for early childhood education and care

2020

This study examines how practitioners of minority-medium Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) in Finland reflect on language awareness (LA) in their professional learning communities (PLCs). The study is conducted within in-service training for ECEC practitioners and it also highlights how these practitioner reflections can be of use and support developing future in-service training within the action research framework. The data include nine group discussions on a reflection task, with 41 primary participants and 165 secondary participants from each primary participant’s respective PLC. As a starting point, the researchertrainers identified six language-policy themes on LA in national …

The operational sex ratio of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus populations: the case of the Mediterranean marine protected area of Ustica Island (…

2009

We investigated, with a series of field and laboratory observations, the possible effect of the starfish Marthasteria glacialis predation on the operational sex ratio (OSR), i.e. the number of sexually mature males divided by the total number of sexually mature adults of both sexes at any one time, of the edible sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. The OSR was estimated three times during the sea urchin summer spawning period (July 2004, June 2005 and July 2006) on barren substrates of Ustica Island Marine Protected Area (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Four sites were selected: two characterized by high M. glacialis density (take zone C) and two controls with low starfish density (no-take zo…

Sickness presenteeism of German teachers: prevalence and influencing factors

2016

AbstractThe aim of the present study was to investigate teachers’ sickness presenteeism (SP). We examined the prevalence of SP in a sample of teachers as well as work-related and health-related influencing factors of teachers’ SP. We used a cross-sectional study design. Teachers working at different types of schools in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany) participated in an online survey. We used Pearson’s Chi-squared test (in case of categorical variables) or Mann–Whitney-U-test (in case of continuous variables) to test for differences between SP and sociodemographic/work-related/health-related factors. Factors influencing SP were identified using multivariable logistic regression analyses. Nine…

Conditions for Development of Co-operation between Educational Institutions - a Case Study of the INTERREG V-A Czech Republic - Poland (2014-2020)

2016

Poland’s accession to the European Union has offered a plane for building a variety of forms of territorial cooperation as elements of the cohesion policy and the European neighborhood policy. They serve to realize of the strategy “Europe 2020” and are accompanied by the possibility of making use of appropriate sources of financing or co-financing programs and enterprises from European funds. Territorial cooperation covers projects of trans-national, trans-European and cross-border ranges, the INTERREG V-A between the Czech Republic and the Republic of Poland being one of them in the financial perspective 2014-2020. The aim of the paper is to present the principles behind the participation …

Operational sex ratio and resource defence as predictors of the mating system in European bitterling

2003

Operational sex ratio (OSR), the ratio of sexually active males to fertilizable females in a population, plays a central role in the theory of mating systems by predicting that the intensity of male–male competition and the degree of sexual selection increases as the OSR becomes increasingly male biased. At high values of OSR, however, resource defence theory predicts the breakdown of territoriality and a shift towards scramble competition with a decrease in sexual selection. The direction that correlations between OSR and resource competition and variance in mating success will take depends on the biology of the species of interest. We investigated the effects of male population density an…
