Guaranteed lower bounds for cost functionals of time-periodic parabolic optimization problems

In this paper, a new technique is shown for deriving computable, guaranteed lower bounds of functional type (minorants) for two different cost functionals subject to a parabolic time-periodic boundary value problem. Together with previous results on upper bounds (majorants) for one of the cost functionals, both minorants and majorants lead to two-sided estimates of functional type for the optimal control problem. Optimal Integration of Hybrid Supercapacitor and IPT System for a Free-Catenary Tramway

The aim of the paper is the study of an optimal integration of a supercapacitor-based storage system and inductive power transfer system for the free-catenary operation of a tramway. Starting from the definition of the topology of inductive power transfer system, we propose and analyze a design procedure for the pads of the inductive power system. In the second part of the paper, an optimal integration strategy for the correct size of on-board supercapacitors and the power of the inductive energy transfer are proposed. The results obtained by means of numerical simulations are discussed. © 2018 IEEE.

Multi Sources Water Supply System Optimal Control: A Case Study

The optimal operation of a multi quality network was analysed applying Linear Programming methods. The peculiar service condition of the industrial city of Gela (Italy) was investigated. The network is supplied both from waters derived from a desalination plant and other natural sources. The method aimed to minimise energy cost and find the optimal operation control, while satisfying demand and quality constraints, specifically with regard to water temperature. The method proved to be effective in the selection of the optimal management strategy after the definition of a specific water quality target. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Optimal design of an electro-hydraulic valve for heavy-duty vehicle clutch actuator with certain constraints

Abstract The main objective of this paper is to investigate the sensitivity analysis and optimal design of a proportional solenoid valve (PSV) operated pressure reducing valve (PRV) for heavy-duty automatic transmission clutch actuators. The nonlinear electro-hydraulic valve model is developed based on fluid dynamics. In order to implement the sensitivity analysis and optimization for the PRV, the PSV model is validated by comparing the results with data obtained from a real test-bench. Does optimal partitioning of color space account for universal color categorization?

A 2007 study by Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal purports to show that universal categories emerge as a result of optimal partitioning of color space. Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal only consider color categorizations of up to six categories. However, in most industrialized societies eleven color categories are observed. This paper shows that when applied to the case of eleven categories, Regier, Kay, and Khetarpal's optimality criterion yields unsatisfactory results. Comparison of Numerical Methods in the Contrast Imaging Problem in NMR

International audience; In this article, the contrast imaging problem in nuclear magnetic resonance is modeled as a Mayer problem in optimal control. A first synthesis of locally optimal solutions is given in the single-input case using geometric methods based on Pontryagin's maximum principle. We then compare these results using direct methods and a moment-based approach, and make a first step towards global optimality. Finally, some preliminary results are given in the bi-input case.
