Strain differences in the ratio of synaptic body types in photoreceptors of the rat retina.

In the retinal outer plexiform layer of seven different rat strains, synaptic bodies (SB) were counted and, according to their morphology, characterized as synaptic ribbons (SR), synaptic spheres (SS) or intermediate structures. It was found that absolute SB numbers showed relatively small variations while SR/SS ratios differed considerably between the strains investigated. These results are discussed with respect to retinal pigmentation and to formation and degradation, respectively, of synaptic ribbons.

PCARE and WASF3 regulate ciliary F-actin assembly that is required for the initiation of photoreceptor outer segment disk formation

Significance The photoreceptor outer segments are primary cilia, modified for phototransduction by incorporation of stacked opsin-loaded membrane disks that are continuously regenerated. This process is disrupted in several types of inherited retinal dystrophy, but the driving force remained unclear. We show that C2orf71/PCARE (photoreceptor cilium actin regulator), associated with inherited retinal dystrophy subtype RP54, efficiently recruits the Arp2/3 complex activator WASF3 to the cilium. Human kininogens interact with M protein, a bacterial surface protein and virulence determinant.

Streptococcus pyogenes, the most significant streptococcal species in clinical medicine, expresses surface proteins with affinity for several human plasma proteins. Here we report that kininogens, the precursors to the vasoactive kinins, bind to the surface of S. pyogenes. M protein, a surface molecule and a major virulence factor-in these bacteria, occurs in > 80 different serotypes. Among 49 strains of S. pyogenes, all of different M serotypes, 41 bound radiolabelled kininogens, whereas 6 M protein-negative mutant strains showed no affinity. Genes and derived amino acid sequences of S-layer proteins from mesophilic, thermophilic, and extremely thermophilic methanococci

Cells of methanococci are covered by a single layer of protein subunits (S-layer) in hexagonal arrangement, which are directly exposed to the environment and which cannot be stabilized by cellular components. We have isolated S-layer proteins from cells of Methanococcus vannielii ( T(opt.)=37 degrees C), Methanococcus thermolithotrophicus ( T(opt.)=65 degrees C), and Methanococcus jannaschii ( T(opt.)=85 degrees C). The primary structure of the S-layer proteins was determined by sequencing the corresponding genes. Dynamic 2- and 3-connectivity on planar graphs

We study the problem of maintaining the 2-edge-, 2-vertex-, and 3-edge-connected components of a dynamic planar graph subject to edge deletions. The 2-edge-connected components can be maintained in a total of O(n log n) time under any sequence of at most O(n) deletions. This gives O(log n) amortized time per deletion. The 2-vertex- and 3-edge-connected components can be maintained in a total of O(n log2n) time. This gives O(log2n) amortized time per deletion. The space required by all our data structures is O(n).

AQM Stability in Multiple Bottleneck Networks

In this paper, we highlight that multiple bottlenecks can affect the performance of active queue management controllers, which are usually configured on a single bottleneck basis, as if each controller were the only element regulating the TCP traffic along its path. To see this, we consider a network scenario where RED is configured at each router, according to previously developed control theoretic techniques. These configuration rules assure stability in a single bottleneck scenario. Yet, we show that instability may arise when two link become congested. We justify this result through a multiple bottleneck model and give guidelines for new cooperative AQM controllers.

Differential expression and interaction with the visual G-protein transducin of centrin isoforms in mammalian photoreceptor cells.

Photoisomerization of rhodopsin activates a heterotrimeric G-protein cascade leading to closure of cGMP-gated channels and hyperpolarization of photoreceptor cells. Massive translocation of the visual G-protein transducin, Gt, between subcellular compartments contributes to long term adaptation of photoreceptor cells. Ca(2+)-triggered assembly of a centrin-transducin complex in the connecting cilium of photoreceptor cells may regulate these transducin translocations.
