Abstract Glyphosate is the globally most used herbicide against a wide range of weeds. Glyphosate has been considered safe to animals as it mainly targets physiological pathways in plants. Abstract This chapter reviews the lignans with biological and pharmacological activity, and includes new natural products and some synthetic or semisynthetic compounds. Lignans are widespread in plants and in many cases are their effective principles. They play an important role as phytoestrogens in preventing menopausial symptoms, osteoporosis, cancer and heart diseases. Lignans possess anticancer and antiviral properties and specifically inhibit certain enzymes and mediators involved in inflammation and immunity processes. Inhibition of induced DNA oxidative damage by beers: correlation with the content of polyphenols and melanoidins.

Beers are a source of dietary flavonoids; however, there exist differences in composition, alcohol concentration, and beneficial activities. To characterize these differences, three kinds of lager beer of habitual consumption in Spain, dark, blond, and alcohol-free, were assayed for total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, superoxide and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, and in vitro inhibitory effect on DNA oxidative damage. Furthermore, their melanoidin content and correlation with antioxidant activity were evaluated. Foliar Spraying with Zineb Increases Fruit Productivity and Alleviates Oxidative Stress in Two Tomato Cultivars

The effects of foliar spraying of the dithiocarbamate zineb on two cultivars of tomato grown in the field in a site with high ozone concentrations were studied by means of biomass assessment, antioxidant enzyme assays, lipid peroxidation, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Zineb prevented the peroxidation of membrane lipids and decreased the activity of scavenging enzymes, which suggests that plants sprayed with zineb are subjected to lower oxidative stress than controls. The beneficial effects of zineb protection is the utilization of a larger fraction of absorbed radiant energy in photosynthesis and a larger fruit yield in plants of both cultivars.

Caseinophosphopeptides exert partial and site-specific cytoprotection against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells

Abstract Caseinophosphopeptides can sequester prooxidant metals and scavenge free radicals, and may thus be used as functional food ingredients. The total antioxidant capacity (TEAC and ORAC) of two pools of caseinophosphopeptides (1–3 mg/ml), obtained from casein subjected to simulated gastrointestinal digestion (at two different pH values) and selective precipitation, was evaluated to determine dose–response activity.
