Structural and Photocurrent Characterization of Anodic Oxides on Titanium
2010
Photoelectrochemical study on anodic aluminum oxide films. Internal photoemission processes at the metal-oxide interface
1991
A photoelectrochemical investigation has been carried out on aluminum oxide films grown anodically at constant rate up to different thicknesses. Depending on the potential both anodic and cathodic photocurrents were observed at photon energies well below the optical bandgap expected for these layers. This finding is explained with the presence of internal photoinjection processes both for electrons and holes from the base metal into the oxide film. The analysis of the photocurrent spectra has given the threshold energies for both processes. The effect of the image force at the metal/oxide interface has been taken into account in order to derive the mobility gap of the films and the energeti…
An insight into the interaction between functionalized thermoplastic elastomer and layered double hydroxides through rheological investigations
2018
Abstract Nanocomposites based on maleated poly(styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene) copolymer (SEBSgMA) and organo-modified layered double hydroxide (OLDH) have been formulated with the aim to investigate the effects of interfacial interactions between the grafted maleic anhydride groups of the copolymer and the OLDH nanolayers on the rheological properties of nanocomposites. The spectroscopic analysis indicates the establishment of specific polymer/nanofiller interactions, whose extent has been highlighted through morphological and rheological investigations. Specifically, oscillatory melt rheology and shear relaxation tests have been considered in order to deeply investigate the interf…
Ballistic transport through quantum point contacts of multi-orbital oxides
2020
Linear and non-linear transport properties through an atomic-size point contact based on oxides two-dimensional electron gas is examined using the tight-binding method and the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ approach. The ballistic transport is analyzed in contacts realized at the (001) interface between band insulators $LaAlO_3$ and $SrTiO_3$ by using the Landauer-B\"uttiker method for many sub-bands derived from three Ti 3d orbitals ($d_{yz}$, $d_{zx}$ and $d_{xy}$) in the presence of an out-of-plane magnetic field. We focus especially on the role played by the atomic spin-orbit coupling and the inversion symmetry breaking term pointing out three transport regimes: the first, at low energies, involvi…
Behavior of one-magnon frequency in antiferromagneticNicMg1−cOsolid solutions
2005
The one-magnon scattering was studied in antiferromagnetic ${\mathrm{Ni}}_{c}{\mathrm{Mg}}_{1\ensuremath{-}c}\mathrm{O}$ solid solutions. We observed unpredicted behavior of both temperature and composition dependences of one-magnon excitation energies. First, the abrupt change of the one-magnon frequency by $7--8\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ occurs between $c=0.98$ and $c=0.9$ in the limit of $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$. Second, upon increasing temperature, the one-magnon energy for highly diluted nickel oxide vanishes significantly below the N\'eel temperature.
Hard X-ray resonant electronic spectroscopy in transition metal oxides
2005
K-edge X-ray absorption and 2p-XPS spectra of 3d-element oxides present spectral features which cannot be explained within a simple one-electron model. These features reveal the fine electronic structure of transition metal (TM) oxides valence states resulting from hybridized TM-3d and O-2p states, and the correlations between these valence electrons. In this paper, we show how resonant electronic spectroscopy (resonant Auger or resonant photoelectron spectroscopy) around the TM K-edge can be used to interpret the structures of the threshold and, with the help of theoretical calculation, to determine the electronic configuration of the excited ion. Quadrupolar transitions towards localized …
Molecular Mechanisms of the Crosstalk Between Mitochondria and NADPH Oxidase Through Reactive Oxygen Species—Studies in White Blood Cells and in Anim…
2014
Aims: Oxidative stress is involved in the development of cardiovascular disease. There is a growing body of evidence for a crosstalk between different enzymatic sources of oxidative stress. With the present study, we sought to determine the underlying crosstalk mechanisms, the role of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP), and its link to endothelial dysfunction. Results: NADPH oxidase (Nox) activation (oxidative burst and translocation of cytosolic Nox subunits) was observed in response to mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) formation in human leukocytes. In vitro, mtROS-induced Nox activation was prevented by inhibitors of the mPTP, protein kinase C, tyrosine kin…
Explaining the phenomenon of nitrate tolerance.
2005
During the last century, nitroglycerin has been the most commonly used antiischemic and antianginal agent. Unfortunately, after continuous application, its therapeutic efficacy rapidly vanishes. Neurohormonal activation of vasoconstrictor signals and intravascular volume expansion constitute early counter-regulatory responses (pseudotolerance), whereas long-term treatment induces intrinsic vascular changes, eg, a loss of nitrovasodilator-responsiveness (vascular tolerance). This is caused by increased vascular superoxide production and a supersensitivity to vasoconstrictors secondary to a tonic activation of protein kinase C. NADPH oxidase(s) and uncoupled endothelial nitric oxide synthase …
A Unique Collection of Palaeolithic Painted Portable Art: Characterization of Red and Yellow Pigments from the Parpalló Cave (Spain).
2016
In this work we analyze the pigments used in the decoration of red and yellow motifs present in the portable art of the Parpallo Cave (Gandia, Spain), one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in the Spanish Mediterranean region. Energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) and spectrophotometry in the visible region (CIEL*a*b*color coordinates and spectral reflectance curves) were used to perform in situ fast analyses of the red and yellow motifs with portable equipment and to characterize their elemental composition and their colorimetric perception, respectively. According to the elemental composition, the intensity of the fluorescence iron signals in red and yellow motif…
A model for evaluating the environmental and functional benefits of “innovative” roundabouts
2015
This study looks at the singling out of a multi-parameter criterion for choosing conventional or innovative roundabout layouts, by taking functional, environmental and economic aspects into consideration. The performances of three conventional roundabouts (with different lane number at entries and through the ring), turbo-roundabouts and roundabouts with right-turn bypass lane on all the arms (flower roundabouts) have been compared in terms of vehicle delays and pollutant (carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particle pollution (PM10 and PM2.5)) emissions. By means of closed-form capacity models and with the help of COPERT IV© software, several traffic simulations have been carried out, referre…
