MR 3007673 Reviewed Geiss F. The Unirationality of Hurwitz spaces of 6-gonal curves of small genus. Documenta Mathematica (2012) 17, 627--640. (Revie…

Let H (d, w) be the Hurwitz space that parametrizes degree d simple coverings of the projective line with w = 2g + 2d - 2 branch points. A classic result affirms the unirationality of these spaces for d \leq 3. Successively, Arbarello and Cornalba in [E. Arbarello and M. Cornalba, Footnotes to a paper of Beniamino Segre, Math. Ann. 256 (1981), 341--362] prove that the spaces H (d, w) are unirational in the following cases: d \leq 5 and g \geq d - 1, d = 6 and 5 \leq g \leq 10 or g = 12 and d = 7 and g = 7. In this paper, the author studies the problem of unirationality over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero when d = 6. In particular, the author proves that the spaces H (6…
Geometric mean and triangles inscribed in a semicircle in Banach spaces
2008
AbstractWe consider the triangles with vertices x, −x and y where x,y are points on the unit sphere of a normed space. Using the geometric means of the variable lengths of the sides of these triangles, we define two geometric constants for Banach spaces. These constants are closely related to the modulus of convexity of the space under consideration, and they seem to represent a useful tool to estimate the exact values of the James and Jordan–von Neumann constants of some Banach spaces.
Urban Greening management in the framework of Smart City Development
2014
Quality of green spaces is an important indicator in the smart urban evolution. Integration between green management needs and ecosystem services within environmental policies and local development plans is often very limited. Urban green infrastructures and related issues still arouse poor interest, mainly in South Mediterranean cities. Methods for full assessment of urban green areas integrating diverse features of sustainability (from biodiversity to public awareness and fruition) are still lacking. Here we aim to present an integrated tool to evaluate/monitor the state and sustainability of urban green spaces. The goal is to support the governance systems of urban green areas by focusin…

2021
The theme falls within the proposals of strategies, tools and forms of housing and urban regeneration and tackles the case of the city of Kos. There currently the recovery and the enhancement of public space in the city is being attempted, and specifically of those urban areas which have long suffered very strong exploitation pressure by private interests as a result of tourism.
One-dimensional nonlinear boundary value problems with variable exponent
2018
In this paper, a class of nonlinear differential boundary value problems with variable exponent is investigated. The existence of at least one non-zero solution is established, without assuming on the nonlinear term any condition either at zero or at infinity. The approach is developed within the framework of the Orlicz-Sobolev spaces with variable exponent and it is based on a local minimum theorem for differentiable functions.
The ACM property for unions of lines in P1×P2
2021
This paper examines the Arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) property for certain codimension 2 varieties in P1×P2 called sets of lines in P1×P2 (not necessarily reduced). We discuss some obstacles to finding a general characterization. We then consider certain classes of such curves, and we address two questions. First, when are they themselves ACM? Second, in a non-ACM reduced configuration, is it possible to replace one component of a primary (prime) decomposition by a suitable power (i.e. to “fatten” one line) to make the resulting scheme ACM? Finally, for our classes of such curves, we characterize the locally Cohen-Macaulay property in combinatorial terms by introducing the definition …
Making Space for Creativity : Niche Construction and the Artist’s Studio
2022
Abstract It is increasingly acknowledged that creativity cannot be fully understood without considering the setting where it takes place. Building on this premise, we use the concepts of niche construction, scaffolding, coupling, and functional integration to expound on the environmentally situated nature of painters’ studio work. Our analysis shows studios to be multi-resource niches that are customized by artists to support various capacities, states, and actions crucial to painting. When at work in these personalized spaces, painters do not need to rely solely on their “inner” powers of imagination, memory, decision making, and technique to execute their paintings. Instead, with the help…
