A rediscovered sign of the medieval identity in the ancient town of Palermo: a tower house in the Kalsa and its historical stratifications

A building supposedly belonged to the House of Chiaramonte (or Chiaromonte) in Sicily was kept for several centuries inside the volume of a larger building in the Kalsa district of Islamic foundation, in Palermo. The sudden detachment of the plaster and some stone elements at the beginning of the 80s of the 20th century made it possible to identify the traces of the façade of a fourteenth-century tower-house, characterized by a series of four windows with pointed arched elements and archivolts with rings of broken sticks, surmounted by a weft of interwoven bands of two-tone stone elements. On September 1st 1726 Palermo was hit by a violent earthquake. Although it did not bring about the destruction of the city, the earthquake caused widespread and extensive damage to the architectural heritage. The local insti- tutions carried out a series of actions involving representatives of the technical culture. These actions affected the subsequent appearance of the urban pattern and influenced the construction methods of the time. Crossing the data taken from chronicles of the time, from maps produced after the earthquake and above all copious archival documents, the research aims to reconstruct the state in which Palermo was after that tragic event, highlighting a number of aspects. …

The author traces the transition of the royal court of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to the Western European model of court ceremonies, which lasted for almost two centuries, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Initially, they followed the ceremonial models of the House of Habsburg and, starting in the 1640s, the French ceremonial, refined at the Versailles of Louis XIV. Meant to extol the monarch in the eyes of subjects, such ceremonies became widespread under kings of the House of Vasa, Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, Jan III Sobieski, and the House of Wettin. Il palazzo Merendino Costantino occupa, all’interno del centro storico di Palermo, una posizione strategica nel Mandamento Castellammare, vista la sua immediata prossimità alla piazza Vigliena, detta anche Quattro Canti o Teatro del Sole.
