Rationalitäten der Wissenproduktion: Über Transformationen von Gegenständen, Technologien und Information in Biomedizin und Lebenswissenschaften

2009

Rationalities of Knowledge Production: On Transformations of Objects, Technologies and Information in Biomedicine and the Life Sciences. Since decades, scientific change has been interpreted in the light of of paradigm shifts and scientific revolutions. The Kuhnian interpretation of scientific change however is now more and more confronted with non-disciplinary thinking in both, science and studies on science. This paper explores how research in biomedicine and the life sciences can be characterized by different rationalities, sometimes converging, sometimes contradictory, all present at the same time with varying ways of influence, impact, and visibility. In general, the rationality of obj…

Toward a holistic understanding of pastoralism

2021

Pastoralism is globally significant in social, environmental, and economic terms. However, it experiences crises rooted in misconceptions and poor interdisciplinary understanding, while being largely overlooked in international sustainability forums and agendas. Here, we propose a transdisciplinary research approach to understand pastoralist transitions using (1) social, economic, and environmental dimensions, (2) diverse geographic contexts and scales to capture emerging properties, allowing for cross-system comparisons, and (3) timescales from the distant past to the present. We provide specific guidelines to develop indicators for this approach, within a social-ecological resilience anal…

Molte Palermo. Temi

2019

In the theme of unfinished ideas of possible cities will recognize the connotative paradigm of the evolution of Palermo will be recognised along a thousand year path of transformational processes none of which was completed by virtue of the distinctive value of exemplum that does not require additional and conclusive demonstrations. The course of history has moreover imposed on Palermo a cyclical recurrence of broken destinies. This was evidence of the invention of the capital city that of the “geometric square and the cross roads” superimposed on the archetypal underpinning of Pan-ormos as a place of exchange. And incompleteness will be the hallmark of the city of the nineteenth century straight roads heading towards undefined destinations the symptomatic expression of the idea of a preordained effect of suspension. Similarly unfinished will be the Palermo of the redevelopment plans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries upto the shapeless development of the contemporary city and the new arterial routes (the Circonvallazione) manifestations of further “Palermo as abstraction” ever more distant from “Palermo as places”. A city ultimately characterized by continuous metamorphoses replacement of values absorptions oblivion and cultural desecration. From this distance one can indeed observe Palermo from a marginal and peripherical point of view as regards its urban limits opening up a different prospect penetrating and maybe even superior able to understand facts and phenomena in depth.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Cloud Sourcing and Paradigm Shift in IT Governance: Evidence from the Financial Sector

2020

In the digital age, organizations are increasingly shifting their applications, services and infrastructures to the cloud to enhance business agility and reduce IT-related costs. However, in moving applications and data to cloud resources organizations face new risks of privacy violations. To manage this risk, organizations need to be fully aware of threats and vulnerabilities affecting their digital re-sources in cloud. Although some previous studies have focused on the emerging challenges of cloud adoption to governance and control, we know little regarding the paradigm shifts in IT governance processes and practices. To address this gap, we conducted an exploratory case study in two larg…

Capturing citizens — Emerging needs: Using social networks in smart cities

2017

In order to reach its objectives, smart cities (or whatever kind of smart urban environment) should be underpinned by complex cyber physical systems (CPS) able to discover needs and services and "smartly" combine them. Services may be thought as services offered by software components, of whatever nature, for instance software, bot, robot, app and so on. Searching for the best service depends on the need of the citizen(s) and also on the type of (smart) environment the citizens are in. Analysis and design of CPSs are more challenging than the only physical or the only cyber system. We propose a design paradigm shift towards runtime for identifying requirements of cyber physical systems for …

Post-fotografia etnografica

2021

It is evident that our technological society is undoubtedly linked to the diffusion of images. Authors such as Gottfried Boehm John Mitchell Hans Belting investigated the nature of the image by laying the foundations in the 1990s for the idea of a pictorial turn of a culture totally dominated by images that has now become a real technical possibility on global scale. A new statute of the image that is used to collect under the label of iconic turner inserted in the wider field of visual culture studies. The use of the term culture alongside that of visual is indicative of the breadth of the field of investigation that visual culture studies aim to seek: they do not want to limit themselves to ascertaining the predominance of the visual in contemporary society and an evaluation of its aesthetic component. but they want to proceed towards an anthropological research in which visual culture is analyzed as a particular lifestyle that expresses certain meanings and values not only in art and high culture but also in institutions and daily behavior. We will try to apply this new paradigm to photographs: instead of asking ourselves what the images mean let's try to ask ourselves what they want.

On the Convergence of Affective and Persuasive Technologies in Computer-Mediated Health-Care Systems

2015

This paper offers a portrayal of how affective computing and persuasive technologies can converge into an effective tool for interfacing biomedical engineering with behavioral sciences and medicine. We describe the characteristics, features, applications, present state of the art, perspectives, and trends of both streams of research. In particular, these streams are analyzed in light of the potential contribution of their convergence for improving computer-mediated health-care systems, by facilitating the modification of patients’ attitudes and behaviors, such as engagement and compliance. We propose a framework for future research in this emerging area, highlighting how key constructs and …

Suggestions for Future Research on the Learning Organization

2019

This chapter suggests some areas for further research on the learning organization. The suggestions, which in one way or another all are connected to the need for a discussion on what the learning organization actually means/how it is and should be defined, are presented under four sub-headings: “defining the learning organization,” “demarcating the learning organization,” “concretizing the learning organization through action research,” and “paradigm shift?” The chapter ends with a list of some less developed research suggestions. One of the most important research areas that is suggested in the chapter is figuring out whether there is reason to try to give the learning organization one de…
