Parametric and nonparametric A-Laplace problems: Existence of solutions and asymptotic analysis
2021
We give sufficient conditions for the existence of weak solutions to quasilinear elliptic Dirichlet problem driven by the A-Laplace operator in a bounded domain Ω. The techniques, based on a variant of the symmetric mountain pass theorem, exploit variational methods. We also provide information about the asymptotic behavior of the solutions as a suitable parameter goes to 0 + . In this case, we point out the existence of a blow-up phenomenon. The analysis developed in this paper extends and complements various qualitative and asymptotic properties for some cases described by homogeneous differential operators.
Slope units-based flow susceptibility model: using validation tests to select controlling factors
2011
A susceptibility map for an area, which is representative in terms of both geologic setting and slope instability phenomena of large sectors of the Sicilian Apennines, was produced using slope units and a multiparametric univariate model. The study area, extending for approximately 90 km2, was partitioned into 774 slope units, whose expected landslide occurrence was estimated by averaging seven susceptibility values, determined for the selected controlling factors: lithology, mean slope gradient, stream power index at the foot, mean topographic wetness index and profile curvature, slope unit length, and altitude range. Each of the recognized 490 landslides was represented by its centroid po…
Analysis of broadband surface BRDFs derived from TOA SW CERES measurements for surfaces classified by the IGBP land cover
2012
Most studies on the reflectance properties of the Earth's surface are addressed estimating the bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of high spatial resolution and high spectral resolution satellite measurements. This article assesses the development of broadband (BB) BRDFs from radiances corresponding to large footprints classified according to the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) land-cover classification. Top-of-atmosphere (TOA) shortwave (SW) CERES (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System) measurements are employed to invert the bidirectional reflectance factor (BRF) Rahman–Pinty–Verstraete (RPV) model for regions identified with the same IGBP typ…
Analysis of the authors’ rights collection frontier using PCA-MDEA: an application to the Valencia region
2002
The aim of this paper is to estimate the authors’ rights collection frontier within the collection zones into which the Valencia Region (Spain) has been divided. To be more exact, a nonparametric frontier technique (Modified Data Envelopment Analysis, MDEA) and the Principal Components Analysis (PCA) are jointly employed to map out an initial approach to the potential authors’ rights collection within this region (as divided into collection zones). The analysis has been carried out both jointly and by majority sectors (performing, musical, and audio-visual arts). Publicaciones Econcult: Área de Investigación en Economía de la Cultura y Turismo. Exemple du projet Arena Naterre
2014
Finding Prediction Limits for a Future Number of Failures in the Prescribed Time Interval under Parametric Uncertainty
2012
Computing prediction intervals is an important part of the forecasting process intended to indicate the likely uncertainty in point forecasts. Prediction intervals for future order statistics are widely used for reliability problems and other related problems. In this paper, we present an accurate procedure, called ‘within-sample prediction of order statistics', to obtain prediction limits for the number of failures that will be observed in a future inspection of a sample of units, based only on the results of the first in-service inspection of the same sample. The failure-time of such units is modeled with a two-parameter Weibull distribution indexed by scale and shape parameters β and δ, …
Low-complexity AoA and AoD Estimation in the Transformed Spatial Domain for Millimeter Wave MIMO Channels
2021
High-accuracy angle of arrival (AoA) and angle of departure (AoD) estimation is critical for cell search, stable communications and positioning in millimeter wave (mmWave) cellular systems. Moreover, the design of low-complexity AoA/AoD estimation algorithms is also of major importance in the deployment of practical systems to enable a fast and resource-efficient computation of beamforming weights. Parametric mmWave channel estimation allows to describe the channel matrix as a combination of direction-dependent signal paths, exploiting the sparse characteristics of mmWave channels. In this context, a fast Transformed Spatial Domain Channel Estimation (TSDCE) algorithm was recently proposed …
Radiomics and Prostate MRI: Current Role and Future Applications
2021
Multiparametric prostate magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is widely used as a triage test for men at a risk of prostate cancer. However, the traditional role of mpMRI was confined to prostate cancer staging. Radiomics is the quantitative extraction and analysis of minable data from medical images; it is emerging as a promising tool to detect and categorize prostate lesions. In this paper we review the role of radiomics applied to prostate mpMRI in detection and localization of prostate cancer, prediction of Gleason score and PI-RADS classification, prediction of extracapsular extension and of biochemical recurrence. We also provide a future perspective of artificial intelligence (machine …
Bayesian hierarchical models for analysing the spatial distribution of bioclimatic indices
2017
A methodological approach for modelling the spatial distribution of bioclimatic indices is proposed in this paper. The value of the bioclimatic index is modelled with a hierarchical Bayesian model that incorporates both structured and unstructured random effects. Selection of prior distributions is also discussed in order to better incorporate any possible prior knowledge about the parameters that could refer to the particular characteristics of bioclimatic indices. MCMC methods and distributed programming are used to obtain an approximation of the posterior distribution of the parameters and also the posterior predictive distribution of the indices. One main outcome of the proposal is the …
Assessment of Granger causality by nonlinear model identification: application to short-term cardiovascular variability.
2007
A method for assessing Granger causal relationships in bivariate time series, based on nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) and nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) models is presented. The method evaluates bilateral interactions between two time series by quantifying the predictability improvement (PI) of the output time series when the dynamics associated with the input time series are included, i.e., moving from NAR to NARX prediction. The NARX model identification was performed by the optimal parameter search (OPS) algorithm, and its results were compared to the least-squares method to determine the most appropriate method to be used for experimental data. The statistical significance of…
