Semantic anomaly detection in school-aged children during natural sentence reading : A study of fixation-related brain potentials

In this study, we investigated the effects of context-related semantic anomalies on the fixation-related brain potentials of 12–13-year-old Finnish children in grade 6 during sentence reading. The detection of such anomalies is typically reflected in the N400 event-related potential. We also examined whether the representation invoked by the sentence context extends to the orthographic representation level by replacing the final words of the sentence with an anomalous word neighbour of a plausible word. Choice of reference area in studies of Alzheimer's disease using positron emission tomography with fluorodeoxyglucose-F18

At present, there is still no consensus on the choice of the reference area in positron emission tomography (PET) studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, PET scans with fluorodeoxyglucose-F18 were carried out in the following groups of subjects: 47 patients with probable AD, 8 patients with mild cognitive impairment, and 15 age-similar healthy subjects. The Cannabinoid Receptor CB1 Interacts with the WAVE1 Complex and Plays a Role in Actin Dynamics and Structural Plasticity in Neurons.

The molecular composition of the cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor complex beyond the classical G-protein signaling components is not known. Using proteomics on mouse cortex in vivo, we pulled down proteins interacting with CB1 in neurons and show that the CB1 receptor assembles with multiple members of the WAVE1 complex and the RhoGTPase Rac1 and modulates their activity. Activation levels of CB1 receptor directly impacted on actin polymerization and stability via WAVE1 in growth cones of developing neurons, leading to their collapse, as well as in synaptic spines of mature neurons, leading to their retraction. In the present research we investigated whether the direction of the attentional bias in line bisection judgment displayed by healthy subjects is influenced by the evaluation of the social distance between self and other. We used inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) trains over the right and left parietal cortex to investigate the role of these regions in the task. Focal cortical malformations comprise a heterogeneous group of disturbances in brain development, often associated with intractable epilepsy. A focal freeze-lesion of cerebral cortex in newborn rat produces a cortical malformation that resembles human polymicrogyria, clinical conditions that results from abnormal neuronal migration. Remembering what but not where: independence of spatial and visual working memory in the human brain

We report the neuropsychological and MRI investigation of a patient (MV) who developed a selective impairment of visual-spatial working memory (WM) with preservation not only of verbal, but also of visual shape WM, following an ischemic lesion in the cerebral territory supplied by one of the terminal branches of the right anterior cerebral artery. MV was defective in visual-spatial WM whether the experimental procedure involved arm movement for target pointing or not. In vivo definition of parieto-motor connections involved in planning of grasping movements

We combined bifocal transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography to investigate in humans the contribution of connections originating from different parietal areas in planning of different reaching to grasp movements. Hyperexcitability of parietal-motor functional connections in the intact left-hemisphere of patients with neglect

Hemispatial neglect is common after unilateral brain damage, particularly to perisylvian structures in the right-hemisphere (RH). In this disabling syndrome, behaviour and awareness are biased away from the contralesional side of space towards the ipsilesional side. Theoretical accounts of this in terms of hemispheric rivalry have speculated that the intact left-hemisphere (LH) may become hyper-excitable after a RH lesion, due to release of inhibition from the damaged hemisphere.
