Abjection and alterity in the imagining of transgender in physical education and sport: a pedagogical approach in higher education
2014
In physical education (PE) and sports there is little theoretical and empirical knowledge about transgender people, and particularly, on how they are and can be imagined within this context. In this paper, we present and analyze a pedagogical activity based on the reading and discussion of a fictional representation of a transgender person within a group of undergraduate students of Sport Sciences. Our theoretical frame situates abjection and alterity as opposing concepts on a continuum. Results show several ways in which a transgender person is imagined by students, as well as constraints and possibilities for the pedagogical proposal to promote moral imagining of transgender. Students sit…

When it’s “All about the bike”—Intrapersonal conflict in light of passion for cycling and exercise dependence.
2015
A strong inclination to engage in a sport activity may provoke intrapersonal conflict. Yet, few studies have explicitly investigated such activity-related conflict in light of self-regulation of activity engagement. In the present research, we explored intrapersonal conflict measured as discrepant self-guides in relation to obsessive passion, harmonious passion, and exercise dependence. Two separate surveys were conducted including leisure time endurance off-road cyclists, with a total of 990 participants. In Study 1, discrepancies with respect to the participants’ actual and ideal involvement in the activity, as well as their perception of acceptance from significant others, were related t…
Sisters of the Brotherhood: Alienation and Inclusion in Learning Philosophy
2023
This open access book explores the gendered reality of learning philosophy at the university level, investigating the ways in which women and minority students become alienated from the social practices of a male-dominated field, and examining pedagogical solutions to this problem. It covers the roles and the interactions of the professor and student in the following ways: (1) the historical situation, (2) the affective, social and bodily situation, and (3) the moral situation. This text analyzes women’s passion for philosophy as a quest for truth, as well as their partial alienation from the social practices of philosophy. It demonstrates that recognition, generosity, and care are central …
Ἀνὰ μέσον ἡδονῆςτε καὶ λύπης: Avidità umana e filantropia alla prova dell’oro in Diodoro
2021
In the Third book of his Bibliotheca, Diodorus Siculus includes an account of the Egyptian gold mines and describes the terrible living conditions of the slaves who are exploited to extract the metal. In this regard, Diodorus’ source is the historian Agatharchides of Cnidus, whose account is handed down by the Byzantine writer Photius. The comparison between the two texts allows scholars to highlight the different historical perspective of Diodorus, which privileges a worldview dominated by philanthropy and compassion for the most peripheral humanity. Further confirmation arises from the description of the Iberian mines (V 35-38), which Diodorus derives from the historian and philosopher Po…
Doing Research for and With Others : A Researcher's Relationship With Research Content
2022
The chapter discusses the question of social justice in social science research by problematizing the researcher-research content relationship and its guiding principle framework Science-Society-Me. With a focus on early career researchers, the author draws on her own PhD research experience to highlight the social justice tension inherent in the normative approaches and methods for selecting research topic, collecting data and relating with research participants, and analyzing and interpreting data especially in empirical research with fellow human beings. Drawing on the theory of affect, the chapter centralizes the position, biography and experience of the researcher, and the relationship…
Carlo Curcio, Rodolfo De Mattei: vite parallele, vite convergenti
2020
Carlo Curcio, Rodolfo De Mattei: parallel and converging lives. Carlo Curcio and Rodolfo De Mattei are rightly part of the so called "season of the masters". Both of them, were not only lecturers in the History of Political Doctrines and carried out an intense publicity activity, but they greatly contributed to the debate on the methodology and nature of this discipline. Animated by civil passion, they have devoted their lives as scholars to researching those ethical principles that are at the basis of politics, constitute its soul and survive beyond the contingencies of an (THEIR) era.
The Destructive Passions of Life and the Soul: An Interdisciplinary View
1996
Man is a marvelous but also a mysterious creature. In spite of the surprising progress of science and technology, in spite of indubitable success in the utilization of the forces of nature, our crimes against nature as well as against man continue. One of the latest phenomena of this kind is the cruel conflict in the former territory of Yugoslavia.
