Rac1-Regulated Endothelial Radiation Response Stimulates Extravasation and Metastasis That Can Be Blocked by HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
2011
Radiotherapy (RT) plays a key role in cancer treatment. Although the benefit of ionizing radiation (IR) is well established, some findings raise the possibility that irradiation of the primary tumor not only triggers a killing response but also increases the metastatic potential of surviving tumor cells. Here we addressed the question of whether irradiation of normal cells outside of the primary tumor augments metastasis by stimulating the extravasation of circulating tumor cells. We show that IR exposure of human endothelial cells (EC), tumor cells (TC) or both increases TC-EC adhesion in vitro. IR-stimulated TC-EC adhesion was blocked by the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin. Glycyrr…
Enterobacter cloacae administration induces hepatic damage and subcutaneous fat accumulation in high-fat diet fed mice.
2018
Accumulating evidence indicates that gut microbiota plays a significant role in obesity, insulin resistance and associated liver disorders. Family Enterobacteriaceae and especially Enterobacter cloacae strain B29 have been previously linked to obesity and hepatic damage. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain unclear. Therefore, we comprehensively examined the effects of E. cloacae subsp. cloacae (ATCC® 13047™) administration on host metabolism of mice fed with high-fat diet (HFD). C57BL/6N mice were randomly divided into HFD control, chow control, and E. cloacae treatment groups. The E. cloacae treatment group received live bacterial cells in PBS intragastrically twice a week, every ot…

Reliability and Sensitivity of Nocturnal Heart Rate and Heart-Rate Variability in Monitoring Individual Responses to Training Load
2022
Purpose: To assess the reliability of nocturnal heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) and to analyze the sensitivity of these markers to maximal endurance exercise. Methods: Recreational runners recorded nocturnal HR and HRV on nights after 2 identical low-intensity training sessions (n = 15) and on nights before and after a 3000-m running test (n = 23). Average HR, the natural logarithm of the root mean square of successive differences (LnRMSSD), and the natural logarithm of the high-frequency power (LnHF) were analyzed from a full night (FULL), a 4-hour (4H) segment starting 30 minutes after going to sleep, and morning value (MOR) based on the endpoint of the linear fit through all 5-m…
The red ear syndrome and migraine: the role of the parasympathetic system in a complex and intriguing clinical association
2010
Background and aims: The red ear syndrome (RES) is a rare syndrome characterized by burning pain and cutaneous erythema in the ear. It is probably due to an autonomic dysfunction, because of a hypofunction of sympathetic and/or a hyperactivity of parasympathetic control. We have previously described an intriguing association with migraine. In the present study, we have investigated the pathophysiological links between the RES and the clinical features of migraine, and pointed out the crucial role of the parasympathetic system. Methods: A total of 172 young migraine sufferers (92 M and 80 F, aged 4–17 years) underwent a clinical and instrumental evaluation. A semi-structured interview about …
Recurrent pathologies in recently built schools in Palermo,
2006
This topic concerns the most significant pathologies noticed in the facilities being used as schools, which were built in Palermo in the last three decades. Many among these facilities already have undergone major restoration works, while the others are in poor conditions, which remarkably compromise the quality of their utilization. Sober elegance and safety are particularly important whenever a facility is to function as a school, especially if we consider the type of users and the ways of utilization. In order to achieve such goal, it is fundamental to analyse the most frequent pathologies, relating them to their causes, so as to have the tools for correcting previous errors and prevent …
Eco-epidemiology of tick- and rodent-borne pathogens in boreal forests
2017
Infectious diseases are amongst the ten major causes of human mortality worldwide, 60% of them being animal-borne. Variations of abiotic and biotic conditions are likely to modify the transmission of parasites and pathogens within reservoir species, and, as a consequence, alter the zoonotic risk for human. My thesis aims at elucidating the dynamics and mechanisms of the maintenance of ticks, tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) and the Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) in the reservoir host, the bank vole (Myodes glareolus, BV). In Northern Europe, tick-borne diseases are growing in importance to human because of the latitudinal expansion of the tick Ixodes ricinus. Field monitoring revealed that I. ricinus…
