Two Types of Liberal Perfectionism*
2005
Since the publication of J. Raz’s Morality of Freedom (Raz 1986), liberalism has often been interpreted as a perfectionist political morality.1 The starting point of this analysis is the refusal, by Raz and other philosophers, of the distinction between theories of the good and theories of justice. According to these authors, liberalism as a theory of justice or, as it was later considered, as a “political doctrine,” faces many theoretical difficulties: the issue of neutrality, the problematic distinction between comprehensive moral doctrine and a merely political account of legitimacy, the vagueness of the concept of “citizen,” the relationship between liberal and non-liberal moral culture…
Social Harmony or a Happy Society
2021
In this paper, I set out to prove that once we correctly identify human nature and organize our world according to the principle of cooperation, we can arrive at a world of social harmony. We can then engage in conscious human evolution, aiming at moral and intellectual perfection. Hence, we can arrive at evolutionity, a new evolutionary epoch which would replace the current conflicting and disharmonious times of postmodernity. The current world disharmony, which can be observed especially in the field of politics and economics, is largely related to the erroneous modern Western philosophical assertions identifying the human being with an individual moved by desires and the will to power, a…
Research Letter: is neuroticism a risk factor for postpartum depression?
2012
Although the relationship between personality and depressive illness is complex (Shea, 2005), there is empirical evidence that some personality features such as neuroticism, harm avoidance, introversion, dependency, self-criticism or perfectionism are related to depressive illness risk (Gunderson et al. 1999). Moreover, personality traits, especially neuroticism, may explain the increased prevalence of depression among females (Goodwin & Gotlib, 2004). Few studies have explored neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism as risk factors for depression after an event as stressful as childbirth. Pitt (1968) was the first author to report high scores on neuroticism and low scores on extraversio…
Relationship between the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics and perfectionism and self-esteem
2017
Background Awareness of the influence of personality traits such as self-esteem and perfectionism on the aesthetic self-image can help clinicians to improve their patients' satisfaction and quality of life. The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between self-esteem, perfectionism and the psychosocial impact of dental aesthetics, and their association with gender. Material and methods A descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 301 students of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Valencia, aged between 18 and 30 years. Each participant was asked to complete a survey comprising three questionnaires: PIDAQ (Psychos…
Esercizi di confutazione su eutanasia e suicidio assistito
2013
In this article, I will offer a definition of active euthanasia, of passive euthanasia and of physician-assisted suicide. Secondly, because I believe in the value of individual autonomy, I will confutate some arguments adduced against the legalization of voluntary euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide. In particular, five arguments. The slippery slope argument, the perfectionist moral argument, the theological argument, the patients’ vulnerability argument, the life’s sacred value argument.
Contro il paternalismo giuridico
2012
In estrema sin…
El declive de la ética de las capacidades
2013
Capability approach is one of the most important contributions of contemporary political philosophy to the subject of international distributive justice and more generally to the implementation of development policies. In this paper I aim to shed light on some pitfalls of the last production of Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum. Sen’s last book “The idea of justice” introduced his theory as a “comparative” approach to issues of justice, while rejecting “transcendental” approaches such as Rawls’one. I will show how this dichotomy between comparative and transcendental approach is mistaken, since it rests on wrong assumptions on what we can require from a theory of justice. As far as Nussbaum i…
Cultural and psychological variables predicting academic dishonesty: a cross-sectional study in nine countries
2021
Academic dishonesty has serious consequences for human lives, social values, and economy. The main aim of the study was to explore a model of relations between personal and cultural variables and academic dishonesty. The participants in the study were N = 2,586 individuals from nine countries (Pakistan, Israel, Italy, India, the USA, Peru, Romania, Ghana, and Poland). The authors administered the Academic Dishonesty Scale to measure academic dishonesty, the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale to measure distress, the Almost Perfect Scale – Revised to measure perfectionism, the Brief Self-Control Scale to measure self-control, and the Singelis Scale to measure independent self-construal. Th…
Resilience and Parental Burnout Among Finnish Parents During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Variable and Person-Oriented Approaches.
2021
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis, different personality characteristics may have influenced parental well-being in different ways. In the present study, we combined variable and person-oriented approaches and examined relationships between resilience, parental burnout, and perfectionism during the lockdown. We first used structural equation modeling to assess the paths between variables. We then used latent profile analysis to examine different profiles of parents based on resilience, perfectionism, and symptoms of parental burnout. Finally, we examined how these profiles differ in terms of relevant background variables. The results showed that resilience predicted par…
