Crash modeling for urban roundabouts: a case study

2013

In many cities and towns, a large number of intersections are considered sites with promise for safety and operational improvements. Several studies have been carried out in many countries to establish relationships between crashes and flow and non-flow explanatory variables, using statistical tools to investigate factors critical to road safety. Starting from a brief review of existing information and analysis on the issue, this article summarizes the findings of an exploratory analysis aimed at modeling injury crashes for a sample of urban roundabouts. The methodological path followed in this research allowed to handle issues associated with the estimation of a safety performance function…

Can We Buy Virtue? Implications from State University Funding On Musical Instrument Performance Teacher Mandate

2021

Recent world developments have put a strain on the humanities in general, and higher education music performance study degree-programmes in particular. In an educational system currently promoting consumer-product relationships where the music performance teacher is very much accountable for the students’ development into professional musicians and, recently, also sustainable world citizens, we must give more attention to what, whom and why we educate? This chapter is an armchair analytical philosophical continuation of a paper published elsewhere (Rolfhamre, 2020). Taking the lead from Julia Annas’ (2011) virtue-as-skill, I will, here, elaborate on what implications the Norwegian state hig…

The role of crystalline, mobile amorphous and rigid amorphous fractions in the performance of recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET)

2012

[EN] The action of thermo-mechanical degradation induced by mechanical recycling of poly(ethylene terephthalate) was simulated by successive injection moulding cycles. Degradation reactions provoked chain scissions and a reduction in molar mass mainly driven by the reduction of diethyleneglycol to ethylene glycol units in the flexible domain of the PET backbone, and the formation of -OH terminated species with shorter chain length. The consequent microstructural changes were quantified taking into account a three-fraction model involving crystalline, mobile amorphous (MAF) and rigid amorphous fractions (RAF). A remarkable increase of RAF, to a detriment of MAF was observed, while the percen…

Travestirsi per Dioniso

2020

Starting from the definition of “performativity” and “gender parody” developed by Judith Butler, this paper aims to investigate the performative functions of male cross-dressing within the dynamics of social categorization in classical Athens. For this purpose I have adopted an eclectic hermeneutic toolbox, borrowing elements from Harvey Sacks’ Membership Categorization Analysis to René Girard’s scapegoat theory. Through the philological analysis of some literary representations of transvestism, such as Pentheus’ cross-dressing in Euripides’ "Bacchae", and the anthropological interpretation of the mythical-ritual complex relating to the effeminacy of Dionysus, my work focuses on the polyval…

Determination of N-acetyl-l-glutamine in urine by HPLC

1986

The determination of N-acetyl-l-glutamine (AC-GLN) in urine of rats after derivatization with xanthydrol by HPLC is described. The urine samples were collected from two groups of rats, one group fed normal nutrition, the other treated with AC-GLN. About 5 mM/l AC-GLN was detected in urine of untreated animals, whereas the excretion of the other group was in the range of 50 mM/l corresponding to about 50 wt.-% of the given AC-GLN.

Determinants of Chairman Compensation

2011

This study examines determinants of chairman compensation in a supervisory board setting and, specifically, the relationship between chairman and CEO compensation. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in Sweden, the study indicates that chairman compensation – despite its fixed nature – is reflective of firm performance via a positive relationship to CEO compensation. As CEO compensation is set before chairman compensation, we argue that the chairman may be inclined to conspire with the CEO in earnings management efforts at the expense of monitoring on behalf of investors. Supporting our argument, we find evidence that the gap between chairman and CEO compensation is less at firms where …

Tour Leaders' Impression Management and Job Performance: Exploring the Moderating Role of Tourists' Self-Monitoring

2012

A tour leader (TL) is a first-line service provider whose performance shapes a tourist's experience and satisfaction during a journey. We examine the moderating effects of the self-monitoring level of group package tour members on the relationship between the use of impression management (IM) tactics by TLs and tourists' subsequent job performance ratings (PRs) of a TL. Data from 485 responses of tourists from 59 outbound tour groups in Taiwan revealed that TLs' use of positive IM tactics – that is, ingratiation, self-promotion, and exemplification – is positively related to tourists' PRs. In contrast, their use of non-positive IM tactics – that is, supplication and intimidation – is negati…

Do non-responders to resistance training exist in professional sport?

2020

Resistance training (RT) is the most popular form of exercise that exerts several benefits (muscle hypertrophy and strength). Furthermore, we are witnessing several athletes competing at the highest level of their respective sport have undergone an enormous physical transformation. Nonetheless, lack of RT training, especially after a long detraining period, causes loss of muscle mass, and consequently, a decreased muscle strength, power, and lower muscle activation, and consequently, performance deterioration. In light of these facts, several authors recently have arisen the existence of responders and non-responders to RT. In order to improve athletic performance, the scientific community …
