Player performance, satisfaction, and video game enjoyment
2009
An experiment (N = 74) was conducted to investigate the impact of game difficulty and player performance on game enjoyment. Participants played a First Person Shooter game with systematically varied levels of difficulty. Satisfaction with performance and game enjoyment were assessed after playing. Results are not fully in line with predictions derived from flow and attribution theory and suggest players to (1) change their view on their own performance with its implications for enjoyment with increasing game experience and (2) to switch strategically between different sources of fun, thus maintaining a (somewhat) positive experience even when performance-based enjoyment is low.
Gender and Sexuality. Rights, Language and Performativity
2012
The book engages critically with two main aspects of the socio-cultural construction of gender and sexuality. The first section of the volume, Sexual Rights, is socio-political, and includes both the problem of the recognition of rights for all individuals, especially LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, queer and intersexual) subjects, and the struggle to combat discrimination, that entails an analysis of and an opposition to homophobic discourses and actions. The second section of the volume, Media, Literature and Performativity, involves a theoretical elaboration of discursive and literary strategies that relate or can be applied to gendered and sexed identities. These two sphere…
Gender differences in Italian STEM degree courses: a discrete-time competing-risks model
2020
In this paper, we highlight possible gender differences in performance of students attending Italian university STEM degree courses, controlling for sociodemographic and territorial variables. We used the micro-data from the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research database of the 2011-12 freshmen cohort enrolled at an Italian bachelor university degree course. The analysis was dealt with by fitting a discrete-time competing-risks model. Bachelor degree graduation, dropout, and change to non-STEM courses were considered as competing events. The aim is to highlight gender gaps in the student performance, and the STEM courses where this gap is more critical.
Agents of change: Women in top management and corporate environmental performance
2020
International audience; We analyze the influence of gender diversity in top management on the environmental performance of French firms. Consistent with gender socialization theory, which posits that women are raised from childhood to be more nurturing and compassionate for others, we find that firms with more women in top management exhibit higher environmental performance. This result extends those already reported in the literature regarding the effect of gender diversity at board level. We also show that women in top management are associated with several key indicators such as development of eco‐friendly products and commitment to resource reduction. Furthermore, we find that the influ…
Gender diversity and governance: Analysis of Italian listed companies
2020
In recent years, many countries have adopted different legislative and self-regulatory initiatives to be able to tackle the problem of the underrepresentation of women on boards. Also, Italy with Law No. 120/2011 introduced the gender issue adopting the normative that 1/3 of the elected members would be women. In this job, a primary aim was to study over the period 2016/2018 the impact of female presence on boards of 50 companies listed on the Italian Stock Exchange. In depth, our results confirm that Italian Law has produced significant effects on the composition of the corporate board. The result of our study shows that women positively influence corporate performance, this is perfectly i…
Hemocyanin subunit organization of the gastropod Rapana thomasiana
1999
Abstract RtH1 and RtH2, the two hemocyanin isoforms of the prosobranch gastropod Rapana thomasiana, have been purified by anion-exchange chromatography and studied by SDS–PAGE and immunoelectrophoresis. Both subunit types are built up of eight functional units (FUs). Under reducing conditions subunit RtH2 splits into two fragments, RtH2- a – f and RtH2- gh, suggesting the presence of a disulfide bridge between FU2- f and FU2- g. By proteolytic cleavage of the subunits into three-, two-, and single-FU fragments, purification of fragments by HPLC, N-terminal sequencing of the peptides, and crossed-line immunoelectrophoresis, FUs- a – h of RtH2 and FU- a, FU- d, FU- e, and FU- f of RtH1 were i…
Assessing the Performance of Interactive Multiobjective Optimization Methods
2021
Interactive methods are useful decision-making tools for multiobjective optimization problems, because they allow a decision-maker to provide her/his preference information iteratively in a comfortable way at the same time as (s)he learns about all different aspects of the problem. A wide variety of interactive methods is nowadays available, and they differ from each other in both technical aspects and type of preference information employed. Therefore, assessing the performance of interactive methods can help users to choose the most appropriate one for a given problem. This is a challenging task, which has been tackled from different perspectives in the published literature. We present a …
Human Heart-Related Indexes Behavior Study for Aircraft Pilots Allowable Workload Level Assessment
2022
This study aimed to evaluate workload by detecting Heart Rate Variability (HRV) indexes in a sample of 34 pilots (with a mean age of 33 years) while performing simulated flight exercises. A one-way ANOVA with repeated measures was performed to assess the changes of the physiological measures in five standard maneuvers associated with different workload levels. The results show that all the indexes, but the Low Frequency to High Frequency ratio index (LF/HF), have a well-defined trend between the baseline and the en-route phase and with the three phases takeoff, steady turn, and landing. This study, as main findings, provides evidence of a differentiation among low, medium, and high workload…
High-Performance PCR for Alleles Discrimination of Chromo-Helicase-DNA Binding Protein (CHD1) Gene in Bird Sexing
2023
Genetic analyses aiming at assessing the presence of specific sequences or alleles are often carried out by PCR. Sexing of most birds is nowadays based on PCR with “universal” primers and relies on the assessment of the presence of the sex-linked CHD1-Z and -W alleles. The entire workflow is relatively time-consuming, especially for batch analyses, whereas methods that allow carrying out the entire procedure in a short time are highly desirable. The only method for outdoor analyses reported so far relies on LAMP; however; it fails to work properly in Procellariiformes. Besides improving the LAMP test; we have developed a PCR-based DNA amplification procedure (named high-performance PCR); wh…
