Brain lateralization of metrical accenting in musicians.

The perception of meter, or the alternation of strong and weak beats, was assessed in musically trained listeners through magnetoencephalography. Metrical accents were examined with no temporal disruption of the serial grouping of tones. Results showed an effect of metrical processing among identical standard tones in the left hemisphere, with larger responses on strong than on weak beats. Moreover, processing of occasional increases in intensity (phenomenal accents) varied as a function of metrical position in the left hemisphere, but not in the right. Our findings support the view of a relatively early, left-hemispheric effect of metrical processing in musicians.

AbstractRecent studies have suggested that DNA variations in the CCK-AR gene might predispose individuals to schizophrenia and particularly to auditory hallucinations (AH). The aim of this study is to assess the association between AH, using a specific scale for AH in schizophrenia (PSYRATS), and the CCK-AR polymorphism at 779 in a Spanish sample. A total of 105 DSM-IV schizophrenic patients with AH and 93 unrelated controls were studied. We describe a rare case of a solid variant of a mammary adenoid cystic carcinoma with basaloid features (sbACC) and its coexistence with a "small cell" carcinoma (SCC), identified and confirmed by histological and immunohistochemical observations: the absence of glandular structures and PAS-positive globules, positivity for neuroendocrine markers (NSE, synaptophysin and chromogranin), and negativity for 34betaE12 and SMA actin were the aspects suggesting the presence of SCC. Autoinflammatory disorders (AIDs) are a novel class of diseases elicited by mutations in genes regulating the homeostasis of innate immune complexes, named inflammasomes, which lead to uncontrolled oversecretion of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β. Protean inflammatory symptoms are variably associated with periodic fever, depicting multiple specific conditions. Childhood is usually the lifetime in which most hereditary AIDs start, though still a relevant number of patients may experience a delayed disease onset and receive a definite diagnosis during adulthood. Starting with the two competing translations of aestheticism (esthétisme and estheticisme), this article is devoted to retracing the complex reception of the English term in various French journalistic writings between 1880 and 1900. I follow the semantic vicissitudes of the two terms and their cognates, ‘esthète’ and ‘esthétique’, as they circulated in public discourse through the press and magazines. We describe a Windows program that enables users to obtain a broad range of statistics concerning the properties of word and nonword stimuli in an agglutinative language (Basque), including measures of word frequency (at the whole-word and lemma levels), bigram and biphone frequency, orthographic similarity, orthographic and phonological structure, and syllable-based measures. It is designed for use by researchers in psycholinguistics, particularly those concerned with recognition of isolated words and morphology. Bifurcations of Links of Periodic Orbits in Non-Singular Systems with Two Rotational Symmetries on S3

A topological characterization of all possible links composed of the periodic orbits of a Non Singular Morse-Smale flow on S3 has been made by M. Wada. The presence of symmetry forces the appearance of given types of links. In this paper we introduce a geometrical tool to represent these type of links when a symmetry around two axes is considered on NMS systems: mosaics. On the other hand, we use mosaics to study what kind of bifurcation can occur in this type of system maintaining the symmetry.
All-Optical frequency Shifter in a Periodically Poled Lithium Tantalate Waveguide

A frequency shifting device is fabricated and tested in a congruent Lithium Tantalate waveguide. Periodic poling for quasi-phase-matching and channels for operation in the near-infrared C-band were obtained, demonstrating a two-stage parametric conversion.
Gabor systems and almost periodic functions

Abstract Inspired by results of Kim and Ron, given a Gabor frame in L 2 ( R ) , we determine a non-countable generalized frame for the non-separable space AP 2 ( R ) of the Besicovic almost periodic functions. Gabor type frames for suitable separable subspaces of AP 2 ( R ) are constructed. We show furthermore that Bessel-type estimates hold for the AP norm with respect to a countable Gabor system using suitable almost periodic norms of sequences.
