Chemical heterogeneity of amyloid in the carpal tunnel syndrome

140 biopsies from 108 patients afflicted with the carpal tunnel syndrome were studied, 27 of whom showed deposition of amyloid, in 6 of them to such an extent that the amyloid was considered significant in the pathogenesis of the carpal tunnel syndrome. Morphologically, vessels and ligaments were affected and especially the peritendinous structures. The author has studied, in a group of 40 dissections on cadavers of individuals of different ages, the main “critical zones” of entrapment of some terminal branches of the lumbo-sacral plexus, which include canals (fibrous, osteo-fibrous, fibro-muscular), intervals (intermuscular, fibro-muscular, musculo-ligamentous), rings (fibrous or fibro-muscular) and foramina. They provide the topographical anatomical basis for possible compressive phenomena of the nerves of the lower limb.

Summary The treatment of the painful osteomyelitis in patients with SAPHO syndrome (Synovitis, Acne, Pustulosis, Hyperostosis, Osteitis) is often a problem. A 53-year-old woman had experienced palmo-plantar pustular skin lesions for four years, and in the past two years complained about progressive breath-and movement-dependent pain of the sternum. On examination she had extensive palmoplantar pustules and a painful swelling in the area of the right sternoclavicular joint. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD): Should it be Considered a Systemic Disease?

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked muscle disease characterized by progressive skeletal muscle loss and development of respiratory failure due to involvement of respiratory muscles. Similar to human DMD, the mdx mouse model lacks dystrophin but is characterized by relatively mild muscle injury, allowing testing the effects of mild endurance exercise training on dystrophic skeletal muscle. We were interested to study the effects of exercise training on airway cells in trained mdx mice by applying the same protocol previously tested in Swiss mice. Our goal was to evaluate some plasma markers of platelet and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) activation in a group of young adults with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) at the initial stage and after three months. We enrolled 49 AMI subjects aged<45 years and examined plasmatic levels of platelet factor 4 (PF4), β-thromboglobulin (β-TG), elastase and myeloperoxidase (MPO) using ELISA methods. PF4 and β-TG were increased, compared to control subjects, both at the initial stage and after 3 months. Background: Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA or aspirin) is one of the world’s most widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Numerous studies have shown that the long-term use of aspirin may contribute to longer survival among patients with various types of cancer, including ovarian cancer.
