Teacher competencies in game-based pedagogy
2018
This study examines what kind of competencies teachers need in using game-based pedagogy (GBP). In our conceptual framework, GBP entails four approaches: using educational games or entertainment games, learning by making games, and using gamification in learning. Our data, consisting of teachers’ documentation, thematic interviews and questionnaires, were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Four main competence areas were identified: pedagogical, technological, collaborative and creative. The results are applicable for developing teacher education and in-service training, as teacher competencies in game-based learning will be more integral to teachers’ professional knowledge and sk…
Disciplinary contextualisation of transversal competence in Finnish local curricula : the case of multiliteracy, mathematics, and social studies
2020
Competence-based education is a widely implemented educational approach, but more research is needed into the relationship between transversal competences and individual disciplines. In this article, we present the results of a study focusing on how the transversal competence of multiliteracy is contextually defined in Finnish local curricula in the disciplines of mathematics and social studies. The article offers new insights into the discussion between content- and competence-based educations by introducing the concept of disciplinary contextualisation. Based on the qualitatively analysed data, four different types of disciplinary contextualisation are presented and further discussed. The…
Life skills education : teachers' perceptions in primary school classrooms in Finland and Singapore
2018
This research paints a picture of how life skills education could look like as part of the curriculum in every day school life in primary schools in Finland in Singapore through the lens of teachers. Life skills education is discussed with reference to formal structures as set by the curriculum and also through informal approaches by teachers. Previous literature on life skills was considered in arriving at the main components of life skills to be used in this study. A total of six teachers participated in the study. Three were from Finland and the other three were from Singapore. The teachers have different personal and professional training background as well as number of years of experie…
Elementary school principals’ work from the ecological systems perspective: Evidence from Finland
2022
The present study aimed to investigate elementary school principals’ work from the ecological systems perspective and which elements of their work are experienced as demands or resources. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 principals. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the data. The results show that the way principals experience their work is individual and influenced by several internal and external factors. Some of the most extensive demands appear to be related to interaction with different stakeholders in situations where principals have the role of mediator in solving conflicting situations. Challenges also seem to arise in dealing with elements or issues…
Digital competence across boundaries - beyond a common Nordic model of the digitalisation of K-12 schools?
2021
This paper explores policy related to digital competence and the digitalisation of Nordic K-12 schools. Anchored in some key transnational policies on digital competence, it describes some current Nordic movements in the national policies of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The concept of boundary objects is used as an analytical lens, for understanding digital competence as a plastic and temporal concept that can be used to discuss the multi-dimensional translation of this concept in these Nordic countries. The paper ends with a discussion of the potential to view digital competence as a unifying boundary object that, with its plasticity, temporality and n-dimensionality, can show sign…

Kenellä on valta vaikuttaa? : eri-ikäisten peruskoululaisten käsityksiä vallankäytön rakenteista ja omista vaikuttamisen mahdollisuuksistaan
2010
Tutkin työssäni, miten eri-ikäiset peruskoululaiset hahmottavat eri vallankäytön rakenteiden ympärillään rakentuvan. Kenellä koululaiset hahmottavat olevan valtaa vaikuttaa yhteisiin asioihin ja millaisina he näkevät omat vaikuttamisen mahdollisuutensa näiden rakenteiden keskellä? Aihetta on tärkeä tutkia, sillä jo valtakunnallinen opetussuunnitelma nimeää yhdeksi koulujen keskeiseksi tehtäväksi kansalaisten kasvattamisen aktiivisiksi yhteiskunnan jäseniksi.

2017
Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena oli selvittää lahjakkaiden oppilaiden omia näkemyksiä heidän alisuoriutumisestaan koulussa. Tutkielmassa selvitettiin, mitkä tekijät aiheuttavat heidän mukaansa alisuoriutumista, mitä vaikutuksia alisuoriutumisella on myöhempään elämään sekä kuinka alisuoriutumista voisi estää koulussa. Tutkielma toteutettiin laadullisin menetelmin. Aineisto kerättiin avoimia kysymyksiä sisältävällä verkkokyselyllä. Tutkielmaan osallistui 43 henkilöä, iältään 7—65-vuotiaita, jotka kokivat olevansa lahjakkaita itse määrittelemällään osa-alueella sekä tunsivat alisuoriutuneensa koulussa. Aineisto analysoitiin sisällönanalyysia käyttäen. Syitä alisuoriutumiseen löytyi niin koulup…
