Evaluation of psychological measures for the assessment of recovery and stress during a shock-microcycle in strength and high-intensity interval trai…

2017

Abstract The aim of this paper was a) to analyse the intraindividual change and criterion sensitivity of the Acute Recovery and Stress Scale (ARSS) and its abridged version the Short Recovery and Stress Scale (SRSS) in response to a 6-day microcycle of intensified strength training (STM) and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) in comparison with the change in the criterion measures maximal dynamic strength (estimated 1 repetition maximum [1RMest]; STM) or repeated sprint ability (RSA; HIIT), and b) to compare descriptively the results of the subjective measures with earlier reported physiological and performance markers of the same study. Participants were 23 (STM; 23.7 ± 2.0 years) and…

Traditional vs daily undulling periodization in strength and local muscle endurance gains on trained men

2018

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of different periodization models on strength and local muscle endurance. Twenty trained men (25.45 ± 2.984 years, 75.34 ± 6.05 kg, 177.25 ± 4.92 cm, 23.96 ± 1.64 kg . m-2) were randomly assigned in two groups: undulling periodization (UPG) and traditional periodization group (TPG), respectively. All the subjects performed one repetition maximum (1-RM) strength test and a local muscle endurance test (60% of 1-RM to failure) before, during and after experimental period. The UPG executed 30 workout sessions with daily modifications regarding intensity, volume and rest period length. The TGP was divided into 3 phases (10 workout sessions in e…

Maximal strength and power characteristics in isometric and dynamic actions of the upper and lower extremities in middle-aged and older men

1999

Muscle cross-sectional area of the quadriceps femoris (CSAQF), maximal isometric strength (handgrip test and unilateral knee extension/flexion), the shape of isometric force-time curves, and power-load curves during concentric and stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) actions with loads ranging from 15 to 70% of one repetition maximum half-squat (1RMHS) and bench-press (1RMBP) were examined in 26 middle-aged men in the 40-year-old (M40) (mean age 42, range 35-46) and 21 elderly men in the 65-year-old age group (M65) (mean age 65, range 60-74). Maximal bilateral concentric (1RMHS and 1RMBP), unilateral knee extension (isometric; MIFKE and concentric; 1RMKE) strength and muscle CSA in M65 were lower…

The pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) is engaged in speech comprehension under difficult circumstances such as poor acoustic signal quality or time-critical conditions. Previous studies found that left pre-SMA is activated when subjects listen to accelerated speech. Here, the functional role of pre-SMA was tested for accelerated speech comprehension by inducing a transient "virtual lesion" using continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS). Participants were tested (1) prior to (pre-baseline), (2) 10 min after (test condition for the cTBS effect), and (3) 60 min after stimulation (post-baseline) using a sentence repetition task (formant-synthesized at rates of 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 syllab…

Effects of combined endurance and strength training on muscle strength, power and hypertrophy in 40-67-year-old men

2009

Both strength and endurance training have several positive effects on aging muscle and physical performance of middle-aged and older adults, but their combination may compromise optimal adaptation. This study examined the possible interference of combined strength and endurance training on neuromuscular performance and skeletal muscle hypertrophy in previously untrained 40-67-year-old men. Maximal strength and muscle activation in the upper and lower extremities, maximal concentric power, aerobic capacity and muscle fiber size and distribution in the vastus lateralis muscle were measured before and after a 21-week training period. Ninety-six men [mean age 56 (SD 7) years] completed high-int…

Strength and power changes of the human plantar flexors and knee extensors in response to resistance training in old age

2002

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess and compare the improvements of muscle strength and power induced by a 16-week resistive programme in a population of 16 older men aged 65-81 years. Methods: Training was performed three times per week at an intensity of 80% of one repetition maximum (1RM) and consisted of both calf raise and leg press exercises. Before-, during- and after-training, maximum isometric and isokinetic torques, maximum power, 1RM, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and electromyographic activity (EMG) of the plantar flexors (PF) and knee extensors (KE) were examined. Results: For the KE and PF, respectively, training resulted in a 29.9 ± 4.4% (mean ± SE) and 21.6 ±…

Quantifying Intermodal Distraction by Emotion During Math Performance: An Electrophysiological Approach

2019

Emotionally engaging stimuli are powerful competitors for limited attention capacity. In the cognitive neuroscience laboratory, the presence of task-irrelevant emotionally arousing visual distractors prompts decreased performance and attenuated brain responses measured in concurrent visual tasks. The extent to which distraction effects occur across different sensory modalities is not yet established, however. Here, we examined the extent and time course of competition between a naturalistic distractor sound and a visual task stimulus, using dense-array electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 20 college students. Steady-state visual evoked potentials (ssVEPs) were quantified from EEG, e…

Changes in electromyographic activity, muscle fibre and force production characteristics during heavy resistance/power strength training in middle-ag…

2001

The effects of a 6-month resistance training (2 day/week) designed to develop both strength and power on neural activation by electromyographic activity (EMG) of the agonist and antagonist knee extensors, muscle fibre proportion and areas of type I, IIa, and IIb of the vastus lateralis (VL) as well as maximal concentric one repetition maximum (1 RM) strength and maximal and explosive isometric strength of the knee extensors were examined. A total of 10 middle-aged men (M40; 42 +/- 2), 11 middle-aged women (W40; 39 +/- 3), 11 elderly men (M70; 72 +/- 3) and 10 elderly women (W70; 67 +/- 3) served as subjects. Maximal and explosive strength values remained unaltered during a 1-month control p…

Repetition without Repetition or Differential Learning of Multiple Techniques in Volleyball?

2021

A variety of approaches have been proposed for teaching several volleyball techniques to beginners, ranging from general ball familiarization to model-oriented repetition to highly variable learning. This study compared the effects of acquiring three volleyball techniques in parallel with three approaches. Female secondary school students (N = 42

Une dialectique de la mémoire et de l'oubli : "Hiroshima mon amour" de Marguerite Duras

2022

Hiroshima mon amour depicts tight relations between memory and oblivion. The novel ’s love story takes place in France ’s collective memory, but it also refers to the individual memory of a woman evoking past events. Consequently, the encounter with another human being (a man) allows her to confront her personal trauma. This confrontation can be perceived as a quest for one ’s own identity and history, i.e. the alienation history of an individual who – due to an unhappy love affair – cannot escape either the past or oblivion. The permeation of these two notions is emphasised by diverse time perspectives which overlap each other, allowing for an intertextual reading of Duras ’ script. Hence,…
